Early and rapid prediction of patency of the infarct-related coronary artery by using left ventricular wall thickness as measured by two-dimensional echocardiography
AbstractObjectives. The aim of this study was to determine whether echocardiography can distinguish between persistent coronary occlusion and reperfusion.Background. There are no adequate clinical or noninvasive laboratory markers to accurately predict successful reperfusion in an acute myocardial infarction.Methods. In a closed chest swine model, the effect of reperfusion on myocardial wall thickness was studied by comparing a 150-min total coronary artery occlusion (group 1) with 120 min of occlusion followed by 30 min of reperfusion (group 2) in the area of risk as measured by echocardiography. Wall thickness was measured at baseline and at 90 and 150 min.Results. In group 1 (n = 4), there was no appreciable change in mean wall thickness from 90 min to 150 min of occlusion at either end-diastole or end-systole (0.54 ± 0.02 to 0.52 ± 0.03 cm, 0.55 ± 0.03 to 0.54 ± 0.03 cm, respectively; p = NS). In contrast, in group 2 (n = 6), an increase in mean wall thickness from 0.53 ± 0.02 to 0.97 ± 0.05 cm at end-diastole and from 0.56 ± 0.04 to 1.04 ± 0.07 cm at end-systole was found from 90 min of occlusion to 30 min of reperfusion (p < 0.001). Reperfusion resulted. in an increase in wall thickness of 83 ± 11% at end-diastole and 92 ± 17% at end-systole. In contrast, persistent coronary occlusion showed minimal changes of â3.0 ± 5% at end-diastole and â2.0 ± 6% at end-systole.Conclusions. This study confirms the hypothesis that an increase in wall thickness can accurately distinguish between reperfusion and permanent coronary occlusion
Childhood conscientiousness predicts the social gradient of smoking in adulthood: a life course analysis.
The social gradient in smoking is well known, with higher rates among those in less advantaged socioeconomic position. Some recent research has reported that personality characteristics partly explain this gradient. However, the majority of existing work is limited by cross-sectional designs unsuitable to determine whether differences in conscientiousness are a predictor or a product of social inequalities. Adopting a life course perspective, we investigated in the current paper the influence of conscientiousness in early and mid-life on the social gradient in smoking and the role of potential confounding factors in a large longitudinal cohort study
What is the Total Deuterium Abundance in the Local Galactic Disk?
Analyses of spectra obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer
(FUSE) satellite, together with spectra from the Copernicus and IMAPS
instruments, reveal an unexplained very wide range in the observed
deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) ratios for interstellar gas in the Galactic disk
beyond the Local Bubble. We argue that spatial variations in the depletion of
deuterium onto dust grains can explain these local variations in the observed
gas-phase D/H ratios. We present a variable deuterium depletion model that
naturally explains the constant measured values of D/H inside the Local Bubble,
the wide range of gas-phase D/H ratios observed in the intermediate regime (log
N(H I} = 19.2-20.7), and the low gas-phase D/H ratios observed at larger
hydrogen column densities. We consider empirical tests of the deuterium
depletion hypothesis: (i) correlations of gas-phase D/H ratios with depletions
of the refractory metals iron and silicon, and (ii) correlation with the
molecular hydrogen rotational temperature. Both of these tests are consistent
with deuterium depletion from the gas phase in cold, not recently shocked,
regions of the ISM, and high gas-phase D/H ratios in gas that has been shocked
or otherwise heated recently. We argue that the most representative value for
the total (gas plus dust) D/H ratio within 1 kpc of the Sun is >=23.1 +/- 2.4
(1 sigma) parts per million (ppm). This ratio constrains Galactic chemical
evolution models to have a very small deuterium astration factor, the ratio of
primordial to total (D/H) ratio in the local region of the Galactic disk, which
we estimate to be f_d <= 1.19 +/-0.16 (1 sigma) or <= 1.12 +/- 0.14 (1 sigma)
depending on the adopted light element nuclear reaction rates.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figure
Molecular Hydrogen in the FUSE Translucent Lines of Sight: The Full Sample
We report total abundances and related parameters for the full sample of the
FUSE survey of molecular hydrogen in 38 translucent lines of sight. New results
are presented for the "second half" of the survey involving 15 lines of sight
to supplement data for the first 23 lines of sight already published. We assess
the correlations between molecular hydrogen and various extinction parameters
in the full sample, which covers a broader range of conditions than the initial
sample. In particular, we are now able to confirm that many, but not all, lines
of sight with shallow far-UV extinction curves and large values of the
total-to-selective extinction ratio, = / -- characteristic
of larger than average dust grains -- are associated with particularly low
hydrogen molecular fractions (). In the lines of sight with large
, there is in fact a wide range in molecular fractions, despite the
expectation that the larger grains should lead to less H formation.
However, we see specific evidence that the molecular fractions in this
sub-sample are inversely related to the estimated strength of the UV radiation
field and thus the latter factor is more important in this regime. We have
provided an update to previous values of the gas-to-dust ratio, (H)/, based on direct measurements of (H) and (H I).
Although our value is nearly identical to that found with Copernicus data, it
extends the relationship by a factor of 2 in reddening. Finally, as the new
lines of sight generally show low to moderate molecular fractions, we still
find little evidence for single monolithic "translucent clouds" with 1.Comment: 35 pages, 5 tables, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The

Identification of Specific Circular RNA Expression Patterns and MicroRNA Interaction Networks in Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) regulate mRNA translation by binding to microRNAs (miRNAs),
and their expression is altered in diverse disorders, including cancer, cardiovascular
disease, and Parkinsonâs disease. Here, we compare circRNA expression patterns
in the temporal cortex and hippocampus of patients with pharmacoresistant mesial
temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and healthy controls. Nine circRNAs showed significant
differential expression, including circRNA-HOMER1, which is expressed in synapses.
Further, we identified miRNA binding sites within the sequences of differentially
expressed (DE) circRNAs; expression levels of mRNAs correlated with changes in
complementary miRNAs. Gene set enrichment analysis of mRNA targets revealed
functions in heterocyclic compound binding, regulation of transcription, and signal
transduction, which maintain the structure and function of hippocampal neurons. The
circRNAâmiRNAâmRNA interaction networks illuminate the molecular changes in MTLE,
which may be pathogenic or an effect of the disease or treatments and suggests that
DE circRNAs and associated miRNAs may be novel therapeutic target
Galaxy Clustering in Early SDSS Redshift Data
We present the first measurements of clustering in the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS) galaxy redshift survey. Our sample consists of 29,300 galaxies
with redshifts 5,700 km/s < cz < 39,000 km/s, distributed in several long but
narrow (2.5-5 degree) segments, covering 690 square degrees. For the full,
flux-limited sample, the redshift-space correlation length is approximately 8
Mpc/h. The two-dimensional correlation function \xi(r_p,\pi) shows clear
signatures of both the small-scale, ``fingers-of-God'' distortion caused by
velocity dispersions in collapsed objects and the large-scale compression
caused by coherent flows, though the latter cannot be measured with high
precision in the present sample. The inferred real-space correlation function
is well described by a power law, \xi(r)=(r/6.1+/-0.2 Mpc/h)^{-1.75+/-0.03},
for 0.1 Mpc/h < r < 16 Mpc/h. The galaxy pairwise velocity dispersion is
\sigma_{12} ~ 600+/-100 km/s for projected separations 0.15 Mpc/h < r_p < 5
Mpc/h. When we divide the sample by color, the red galaxies exhibit a stronger
and steeper real-space correlation function and a higher pairwise velocity
dispersion than do the blue galaxies. The relative behavior of subsamples
defined by high/low profile concentration or high/low surface brightness is
qualitatively similar to that of the red/blue subsamples. Our most striking
result is a clear measurement of scale-independent luminosity bias at r < 10
Mpc/h: subsamples with absolute magnitude ranges centered on M_*-1.5, M_*, and
M_*+1.5 have real-space correlation functions that are parallel power laws of
slope ~ -1.8 with correlation lengths of approximately 7.4 Mpc/h, 6.3 Mpc/h,

Molecular Distributions in Gene Regulatory Dynamics
We show how one may analytically compute the stationary density of the
distribution of molecular constituents in populations of cells in the presence
of noise arising from either bursting transcription or translation, or noise in
degradation rates arising from low numbers of molecules. We have compared our
results with an analysis of the same model systems (either inducible or
repressible operons) in the absence of any stochastic effects, and shown the
correspondence between behaviour in the deterministic system and the stochastic
analogs. We have identified key dimensionless parameters that control the
appearance of one or two steady states in the deterministic case, or unimodal
and bimodal densities in the stochastic systems, and detailed the analytic
requirements for the occurrence of different behaviours. This approach
provides, in some situations, an alternative to computationally intensive
stochastic simulations. Our results indicate that, within the context of the
simple models we have examined, bursting and degradation noise cannot be
