    OPERAS SIG on Tools for Open Scholarly Communication : White Paper 2021

    This white paper is the output of the OPERAS Special Interest Group (SIG) Tools and R&D for scholarly communication; it is an updated version of a previous 2018 white paper1. With a focus on scholarly publishing tools, the objectives of the SIG Tools are to: provide a landscape analysis, identify emerging trends, and list the areas of potential improvements, developments, and collaborations. Since 2018, various studies and initiatives confirmed the necessity to both coordinate the developments of tools and provide guidance to the users. Similarly, OPERAS emphasizes the importance of building the open science scholarly communication infrastructure in Social Sciences and Humanities on community driven tools. The white paper brings information on the existing tools for scholarly publishing, as well as recommendations that will support the building of such an open scholarly communication infrastructure. The paper first examines tools types, definitions, and criteria that are able to facilitate their description and selection. The tools are then analyzed according to publishing main functions. For authoring, the development of online and collaborative tools represents an interesting perspective, especially when relying on structured formats, but also increases the risk of lock-in within multi-functional proprietary services. In peer reviewing, alongside widely used commercial tools, open peer review represents an innovative area, both in terms of usage and tools. Open source tools for publishing already offer a high level of service, but face interoperability challenges with the integration of an increasing variety of third-party services. A specific section is dedicated to communicating tools allowing for comments and annotations, as such function is transversal to the others. To complement this description, the SIG tools also identified major trends that should impact the future of scholarly communication, namely: preprint servers, artificial intelligence, data papers, and user-centric developments. In conclusion, the white paper provides a list of recommendations able to address the challenges identified and to provide building blocks for the envisioned open scholarly infrastructure. The recommendations suggest: to establish user-centric criteria for tools, a tools’ observatory, a set of training materials, guidelines about publishing workflows, and collaborations with other community initiatives

    The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained.     A severe form of abetalipoproteinemia caused by new splicing mutations of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein

    International audienceAbetalipoproteinemia is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by low lipid levels and by the absence of apoB-containing lipoproteins. It is the consequence of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTTP) deficiency. We report 2 patients with new MTTP mutations. We studied their functional consequences on the triglyceride transfer function using duodenal biopsies. We transfected MTTP mutants in HepG2 and HeLa cells to investigate their association with protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and their localization at the endoplasmic reticulum. These children have a severe abetalipoproteinemia. Both of them had also a mild hypogammaglobulinemia. They are compound heterozygotes with c.619G>T and c.1237-28A>G mutations within MTTP gene. mRNA analysis revealed abnormal splicing with deletion of exon 6 and 10, respectively. Deletion of exon 6 (Δ6-MTTP) introduced a frame shift in the reading frame and a premature stop codon at position 234. Despite Δ6-MTTP and Δ10-MTTP mutants were not capable of binding PDI, both MTTP mutant proteins normally localize at the endoplasmic reticulum. However, these two mutations induce a loss of MTTP triglyceride transfer activity. These two mutations lead to abnormal truncated MTTP proteins, incapable of binding PDI and responsible for the loss of function of MTTP, thereby explaining the severe abetalipoproteinemia phenotype of these children

    Following on from the Jussieu Call in 2017 and the National Plan for Open Science from July 2018, it was clearly necessary to look for the right solutions to put the bibliodiversity the Call advocates into practice in France and at the European and international level. The report deals with three main themes - the financing of open science and the related criteria of exemplarity; international relations; and recommendations concerning Plan S. There are 42 criteria which should be used in priority to guide the choice of investments to be made in the framework of the national open science policy. France's international involvement has led to a joint official declaration with the Max Planck Gesellschaft OA2020 which clearly sets out the specific features of the two country's approaches.     Endarterectomy versus stenting in patients with symptomatic severe carotid stenosis.

    International audienceBACKGROUND: Carotid stenting is less invasive than endarterectomy, but it is unclear whether it is as safe in patients with symptomatic carotid-artery stenosis. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, noninferiority trial to compare stenting with endarterectomy in patients with a symptomatic carotid stenosis of at least 60%. The primary end point was the incidence of any stroke or death within 30 days after treatment. RESULTS: The trial was stopped prematurely after the inclusion of 527 patients for reasons of both safety and futility. The 30-day incidence of any stroke or death was 3.9% after endarterectomy (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.0 to 7.2) and 9.6% after stenting (95% CI, 6.4 to 14.0); the relative risk of any stroke or death after stenting as compared with endarterectomy was 2.5 (95% CI, 1.2 to 5.1). The 30-day incidence of disabling stroke or death was 1.5% after endarterectomy (95% CI, 0.5 to 4.2) and 3.4% after stenting (95% CI, 1.7 to 6.7); the relative risk was 2.2 (95% CI, 0.7 to 7.2). At 6 months, the incidence of any stroke or death was 6.1% after endarterectomy and 11.7% after stenting (P=0.02). There were more major local complications after stenting and more systemic complications (mainly pulmonary) after endarterectomy, but the differences were not significant. Cranial-nerve injury was more common after endarterectomy than after stenting. CONCLUSIONS: In this study of patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis of 60% or more, the rates of death and stroke at 1 and 6 months were lower with endarterectomy than with stenting.
