Screening Vector Field Modifications of General Relativity

A screening mechanism for conformal vector-tensor modifications of general relativity is proposed. The conformal factor depends on the norm of the vector field and makes the field to vanish in high dense regions, whereas drives it to a non-null value in low density environments. Such process occurs due to a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism and gives rise to both the screening of fifth forces as well as Lorentz violations. Applicability of advanced planning and scheduling on surgical blocks

An assessment of the suitability of Advanced Planning and Scheduling software on operating rooms and materials centre is carried out. From data gathering and process mapping a scheduling system is implemented and compared to a private hospital’s approach and information system. A method for compromising schedule assertiveness and productivity is proposed and tested on a simulation setting. Final remarks contend that Advanced Planning and Scheduling is a viable tool for surgical block scheduling on the studied hospital and may improve synchronicity with materials centre, sophisticate rescheduling and enable scenario comparison through scheduling simulation

As potencialidades educativas e socioculturais dos Centro de Atividade de Tempos Livres (CATL) : um estudo realizado numa Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social (IPSS)

Dissertação de Mestrado, Educação e Formação, 15 de março de 2019, Universidade dos Açores.O trabalho intitulado “As potencialidades educativas e socioculturais dos Centros de Atividades de Tempos Livres (CATL): um estudo realizado numa Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social (IPSS)” procurou, primeiro, analisar o âmbito de intervenção dos CATL, nas suas demais vertentes (cultura, educação, saúde, recreação e lazer) – confrontando a legislação e documentação em vigor com as práticas vivenciadas, perspetivas/ expetativas dos profissionais e educadores/ educandos. Nesta nossa investigação, de natureza exploratória e com caraterísticas qualitativas, efetuámos um cruzamento de informação obtida pelo recurso a técnicas variadas e complementares: análise documental; observações participantes (entrevistas informais e recolhas de imagens); entrevistas semiestruturadas (individuais e em grupo – Focus Group). Para o tratamento de dados realizou-se a análise de conteúdo. Concluímos que os CATL, da nossa IPSS, assentam na gestão de dois conceitos: ludicidade e liberdade, pressupondo uma relação estreita com a Escola-Família-Comunidade. As atividades normalmente aí desenvolvidas têm características mais lúdicas, artísticas, culturais/ tradicionais, são realizadas ao ar livre e, algumas têm carácter desportivo. Elas incentivam não só a um acréscimo da aprendizagem e criatividade, assim como, de comportamentos mais positivos, verificando-se que o grau de envolvimento entre os vários intervenientes é harmonioso e valorativo para a maior participação e satisfação. Podemos também observar que nesta instituição os recursos existentes procuram responder às necessidades - pessoais e sociais - das crianças, com proposta de atividades orientadas para o seu bem-estar e cumprindo todas as normas legais. É também nesse sentido que vão as expetativas dos seus profissionais e de alguns educadores/ educandos, que realçam a importância do aumento de apoio logístico e estratégias de funcionalidade, legitimando também um maior reconhecimento sócio educativo dos CATL e da sua contribuição na melhoria da qualidade de vida na infância e juventude.ABSTRACT: The study entitled "The educational and socio cultural potential of After School Activity Centers (CATL): a study in a Particular Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS)" sought, in a primarily instance, to analyze the area of intervention of After School Activity Centers in its dimensions (culture, education, health, recreation and leisure) – comparing current legislation with the ongoing practices, perspectives and expectations of professionals, teachers and pupils. In this research, of an exploratory nature and with qualitative characteristics, we did information cross – referencing, by applying different complementary techniques: documentary analysis; participant/direct observations (informal interviews and image gathering); semi-structured interviews (individual and group focused). For the processing of data it was done a content analysis. We conclude that After School Activity Centers of our Institution are grounded on two major concepts: edutainment and freedom, based in a close relation with School-Family-Community. The nature of the Centers activities is more diversified, attractive sportive and game-oriented, mostly performed outdoors, never neglecting the relation between what’s traditional and what’s contemporary. The nature of these activities not only encourages the increase of learning skills and creativity, but also promotes the raise of child positive behavior. We can verify that the degree of involvement between the activities intervenients is harmonious and valued for the level of satisfaction of both teachers and pupils. We can see that in this Institution the existing resources – professionals, teachers and pupils - try to address the personal and social needs of children, proposing oriented activities having in mind their well-being and complying with all legal standards applicable. Nevertheless, they highlight the need to increase logistical support and functional strategies that legitimize more social and educational recognition of CATL and its contribution for the improvement of the quality of life in childhood and youth

A crucialidade dos condicionantes internos: o desenvolvimento comparado das colônias temperadas inglesas entre 1850 e 1930

Fundamentado numa retomada histórico-analítica da trajetória socioeconômica da Austrália, do Canadá e da Argentina, o presente trabalho investiga por que tais países - que possuíam em comum o fato de serem colônias temperadas inglesas -, mesmo partindo de condições aparentemente muito semelhantes, atingiram resultados econômicos e sociais tão distintos. Apesar de partirem da noção das relações de poder características do Sistema Mundial naquele período, as autoras atribuem papel crucial aos condicionantes internos para a escolha da estratégia de crescimento e desenvolvimento econômicos e defendem que somente a partir de uma combinação analítica dos fatores externos e internos, bem como de suas interações, é possível entender por que determinadas estratégias foram adotadas.Based on an historical-analytical review of the social-economic path of Australia, Canada and Argentina, this paper investigates why such countries - that had in common the fact of being British temperate colonies - in spite of starting from apparently very similar conditions, they reached distinct economic and social results. Although the authors do not ignore the typical power relations of the World System at that time, they attribute crucial role to the internal features of these countries in their choices of growth and development strategies. The authors support that only from an analytical combination of the internal and external features, such as their interactions, it is possible to understand why particular strategies were taken

Investigações preliminares sobre a noção de inconsciente em Matéria e Mémória

Monografia (graduação)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Ciências Humanas, Departamento de Filosofia, 2015.Um dos temas centrais das discussões psicológicas e filosóficas do século XIX, o inconsciente é objeto de constantes elaborações por parte do filósofo francês Henri Bergson. Dentre essas, as mais relevantes encontram-se em Matéria e Memória, obra publicada em 1896 e na qual o filósofo francês propõe uma nova abordagem sobre as relações entre o espírito e a matéria. O objetivo desse trabalho é promover uma investigação preliminar sobre o tema do inconsciente na referida obra, procurando reconstituir o trajeto argumentativo desenvolvido por Bergson nos três primeiros capítulos do livro que culmina na defesa da existência do inconsciente e na sua caracterização. Nesta reconstituição, destacamos a concepção bergsoniana de consciência com o intuito de estabelecer não só suas diferenças com o inconsciente como também o modo de relacionamento entre ambos.One of the central themes of psychological and philosophical discussions of the nineteenth century, the unconscious is the subject of constant elaborations by the french philosopher Henri Bergson. The most relevant of them take place in the pages of Matter and Memory, first published in 1896, in which the French philosopher proposes a new approach to the relationship between spirit and matter. The purpose of this work is to promote a preliminary investigation about the theme of the unconscious in that work, looking for a reconstruction of the argumentative path developed by Bergson in the first three chapters of the book that culminates in the defense of the existence of the unconscious and its characterization. In this reconstitution, we highlight the bergsonian conception of consciousness in order to establish not only their differences with the unconscious as well as the mode of relationship between them
