An extension of Satoh's algorithm and its implementation
International audienceWe describe a fast algorithm for counting points on elliptic curves defined over finite fields of small characteristic, following Satoh. Our main contribution is an extension to characteristics two and three. We give a detailed description with the optimisations necessary for an efficient implementation. Finally we give the number of points we have computed on a ``random'' curve defined over the field Fq with q=2^8009
Implementation of Ring Oscillators Based Physical Unclonable Functions with Independent Bits in the Response
International audienceThe paper analyzes and proposes some enhancements of Ring Oscillators based Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs). PUFs are used to extract a unique signature of an integrated circuit in order to authenticate a device and/or to generate a key. We show that designers of RO PUFs implemented in FPGAs need a precise control of placement and routing and an appropriate selection of ROs pairs to get independents bits in the PUF response. We provide a method to identify which comparisons are suitable when selecting pairs of ROs. Dealing with power consumption, we propose a simple improvement that reduces the consumption of the PUF published by Suh et al. in 2007 by up to 96.6%. Last but not least, we point out that ring oscillators significantly influence one another and can even be locked. This questions the reliability of the PUF and should be taken into account during the design
Secure extension of FPGA general purpose processors for symmetric key cryptography with partial reconfiguration capabilities
International audienceIn data security systems, general purpose processors (GPPs) are often extended by a cryptographic accelerator. The paper presents three ways of extending GPPs for symmetric key cryptography applications. Proposed extensions guarantee secure key storage and management even if the system is facing protocol, software and cache memory attacks. The system is partitioned into processor, cipher, and key memory zones. The three security zones are separated at protocol, system, architecture and physical levels. The proposed principle was validated on Altera NIOS II, Xilinx MicroBlaze and Microsemi Cortex M1 soft core processor extensions. We show that stringent separation of the cipher zone is helpful for partial reconfiguration of the security module, if the enciphering algorithm needs to be dynamically changed. However, the key zone including reconfiguration controller must remain static in order to maintain the high level of security required. We demonstrate that the principle is feasible in partially reconfigurable field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) such as Altera Stratix V or Xilinx Virtex 6 and also to some extent in FPGAs featuring hardwired general purpose processors such as Cortex M3 in Microsemi SmartFusion FPGA. Although the three GPPs feature different data interfaces, we show that the processors with their extensions reach the required high security level while maintaining partial reconfiguration capability
Directly Comparing Handoff Protocols for Pediatric Hospitalists
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Handoff protocols are often developed by brainstorming and consensus, and few are directly compared. We hypothesized that a handoff protocol (Flex 11) developed using a rigorous methodology would be more favorable in terms of cliniciansâ attitudes, behaviors, cognitions, or time-on-task when performing handoffs compared with a prevalent protocol (Situation Background Assessment Recommendation [SBAR]).
METHODS: Using a between-groups, randomized control trial design (Flex 11 versus SBAR) during a pilot study in a simulated environment, 20 clinicians (13 attending physicians and 7 residents) received 3 patient handoffs from a standardized physician, managed the patients, and handed off the patients to the same standardized physician. Participants completed surveys assessing their attitudes and cognitions, and behaviors and handoff duration were assessed through observations.
RESULTS: All data were analyzed using independent samples t tests. For attitudes, âease of useâ ratings were lower for SBAR participants than Flex 11 participants (P , .01), and âbeing helpfulâ ratings were lower for SBAR participants than Flex 11 participants (P 5 .02). For behaviors, results indicate no significant difference in the information acquired between the SBAR and Flex 11 protocols. However, SBAR participants gave significantly less information than Flex 11 participants (P , .01). For cognitions, SBAR and Flex 11 participants reported similar workload except for frustration. For handoff duration, there were no significant differences between the protocols (P 5 .36).
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that Flex 11 is an efficient, beneficial tool in a simulated environment with pediatric clinicians. Future studies should evaluate this protocol in the inpatient setting
Hidden magnetic frustration by quantum relaxation in anisotropic Nd-langasite
The static and dynamic magnetic properties of the NdGaSiO
compound, which appears as the first materialization of a rare-earth
kagome-type lattice, were re-examined, owing to contradictory results in the
previous studies. Neutron scattering, magnetization and specific heat
measurements were performed and analyzed, in particular by fully taking account
of the crystal electric field effects on the Nd ions. One of the novel
findings is that the peculiar temperature independent spin dynamics observed
below 10 K expresses single-ion quantum processes. This would short-circuit the
frustration induced cooperative dynamics, which would emerge only at very low
temperature
Lead, cadmium and aluminum in Canadian infant formulae, oral electrolytes and glucose solutions
Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and aluminum (Al) were determined in 437 individual samples of infant formulae, oral electrolytes and 5% glucose solutions available in Canada. In the electrolytes, Cd and Pb concentrations were all below 0.01 and 0.041 ng gâ1, respectively. In the 5% glucose solutions, Pb and Cd levels averaged 0.01 and 0.09 ng gâ1, respectively. Reported on an as-consumed basis, Pb levels in milk- and soya-based formulae averaged 0.90 and 1.45 ng gâ1, respectively, while Cd levels averaged 0.23 and 1.18 ng gâ1, respectively Average Al levels on an as-consumed basis were 440 ng gâ1 (range 10â3400 ng gâ1) in milk-based formulae and 730 ng gâ1 (range 230â1100 ng gâ1) in soy-based formulae. Al concentrations increased in the following order: plain formula < low-iron formula < iron-supplemented formula < casein hydrolysate formula â premature formula †soy formula. For example, in the powdered formulae, average Al concentrations were 18 ng gâ1 for plain milk-based, 37 ng gâ1 for low-iron, 128 ng gâ1 for iron supplemented, 462 ng gâ1 for lactose-free, 518 ng gâ1 for hypoallergenic and 619 ng gâ1 for soy-based formula. Al concentrations, as-consumed, increased with decreasing levels of concentration: powder < concentrated liquid < ready-to-use. Formulae stored in glass bottles contained between 100 and 300 ng gâ1 more Al than the same formulae stored in cans. The source of the increased Al did not appear to be the glass itself, because most electrolytes and glucose solutions, also stored in glass, contained less than 8 ng gâ1 Al. Corresponding differences in Pb and Cd levels were not observed. Al concentrations varied substantially among manufacturers; however, all manufacturers were able to produce plain milk-based formulae containing less than 50 ng gâ1 Al, i.e. within the range of Al concentrations found in human milk. Next to soya-based and hypoallergenic formulae, premature formulae contained among the highest concentrations of Al, ranging 851â909 ng gâ1 from one manufacturer and 365â461 ng gâ1 from another
Energy efficiency: what has research delivered in the last 40 years?
This article presents a critical assessment of 40 years of research that may be brought under the umbrella of energy efficiency, spanning different aggregations and domains-from individual producing and consuming agents to economy-wide effects to the role of innovation to the influence of policy. After 40 years of research, energy efficiency initiatives are generally perceived as highly effective. Innovation has contributed to lowering energy technology costs and increasing energy productivity. Energy efficiency programs in many cases have reduced energy use per unit of economic output and have been associated with net improvements in welfare, emission reductions, or both. Rebound effects at the macro level still warrant careful policy attention, as they may be nontrivial. Complexity of energy efficiency dynamics calls for further methodological and empirical advances, multidisciplinary approaches, and granular data at the service level for research in this field to be of greatest societal benefit
Hedgehog signaling via a calcitonin receptor-like receptor can induce arterial differentiation independently of VEGF signaling in zebrafish
Multiple signaling pathways control the specification of endothelial cells (ECs) to become arteries or veins during vertebrate embryogenesis. Current models propose that a cascade of Hedgehog (Hh), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and Notch signaling acts instructively on ECs to control the choice between arterial or venous fate. Differences in the phenotypes induced by Hh, VEGF, or Notch inhibition suggest that not all of the effects of Hh on arteriovenous specification are mediated by VEGF. We establish that full derepression of the Hh pathway in ptc1;ptc2 mutants converts the posterior cardinal vein into a second arterial vessel that manifests intact arterial gene expression, intersegmental vessel sprouting, and HSC gene expression. Importantly, although VEGF was thought to be absolutely essential for arterial fates, we find that normal and ectopic arterial differentiation can occur without VEGF signaling in ptc1;ptc2 mutants. Furthermore, Hh is able to bypass VEGF to induce arterial differentiation in ECs via the calcitonin receptor-like receptor, thus revealing a surprising complexity in the interplay between Hh and VEGF signaling during arteriovenous specification. Finally, our experiments establish a dual function of Hh during induction of runx1+ HSCs
