Dissociative charge transfer reactions of Ar+, Ne+, and He+ with CF4 from thermal to 50 eV
Journal ArticleGuided ion-beam techniques are used to measure the cross sections for reaction of CF4 with Ar+, Ne+, and H e + from thermal to 50 eV. Dissociative charge transfer followed by successive loss of F atoms are the major processes observed. Only CFx+ (x = 1,2,3) products are observed in the reactions of Ar+ and Ne+. With He+, in addition to the CFx+ products, both C+ and F+ are seen at kinetic energies. Reaction rates for these reactions are also given and compared with previous measurements. It is found that the energy dependence of the cross sections can be understood by considering the energies needed to access specific electronic states of the CF4+ ion
Kinetic energy dependence of dissociative charge-transfer reactions of He+, Ne+, Ar+, Kr+, and Xe+ with silane
Journal ArticleGuided ion-beam techniques are used to measure the cross sections as a function of kinetic energy for reaction of SiH4 with He +, Ne +, Ar +, Kr +, and Xe +. State-specific data for the 2P3/2 ground spin-orbit states of Kr+ and Xe+ are also obtained
A modified molecular beam instrument for the imaging of radicals interacting with surfaces during plasma processing
A new instrument employing molecular beam techniques and laser induced fluorescence(LIF) for measuring the reactivity of gas phase radicals at the surface of a depositing film has been designed and characterized. The instrument uses an inductively coupled plasma source to create a molecular beam containing essentially all plasma species. A tunable excimer pumped dye laser is used to excite a single species in this complex molecular beam.LIF signals are imaged onto a gated, intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) to provide spatial resolution. ICCD images depict the fluorescence from molecules both in the molecular beam and scattering from the surface of a depositing film. Data collected with and without a substrate in the path of the molecular beam provide information about the surface reactivity of the species of interest. Here, we report the first measurements using the third generation imaging of radicals interacting with surfaces apparatus. We have measured the surface reactivity of SiH molecules formed in a 100% SiH_4 plasma during deposition of an amorphous hydrogenated silicon film. On a 300 K Si (100) substrate, the reactivity of SiH is near unity. The substrate temperature dependence (300â673 K) of the reactivity is also reported. In addition, reactivity measurements for OH molecules formed in a water plasma are presented. In contrast to the SiH molecule, the reactivity of OH radicals is 0.55±0.05 on the surface of a Si (100) substrate

Implications for oxidative stress and astrocytes following 26S proteasomal depletion in mouse forebrain neurones
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by progressive degeneration of selective neurones in the nervous system, but the underlying mechanisms involved in neuroprotection and neurodegeneration remain unclear. Dysfunction of the ubiquitin proteasome system is one of the proposed hypotheses for the cause and progression of neuronal loss. We have performed quantitative two-dimensional fluorescence difference in-gel electrophoresis combined with peptide mass fingerprinting to reveal proteome changes associated with neurodegeneration following 26S proteasomal depletion in mouse forebrain neurones. Differentially expressed proteins were validated by Western blotting, biochemical assays and immunohistochemistry. Of significance was increased expression of the antioxidant enzyme peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) in astrocytes, associated with oxidative stress. Interestingly, PRDX6 is a bifunctional enzyme with antioxidant peroxidase and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activities. The PLA2 activity of PRDX6 was also increased following 26S proteasomal depletion and may be involved in neuroprotective or neurodegenerative mechanisms. This is the first in vivo report of oxidative stress caused directly by neuronal proteasome dysfunction in the mammalian brain. The results contribute to understanding neuronalâglial interactions in disease pathogenesis, provide an in vivo link between prominent disease hypotheses and importantly, are of relevance to a heterogeneous spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases
Benefits of early treatment with natalizumab: A real-world study
BACKGROUND: The impact of early versus later high-efficacy disease-modifying therapy (DMT) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is uncertain. This study reported the association of early versus later natalizumab treatment with real-world clinical outcomes in MS patients.
METHODS: The study included 661 participants diagnosed with MS in 1994 or later from 7 US centers participating in the MS Partners Advancing Technology for Health Solutions (MS PATHS) network. Time to natalizumab treatment between diagnosis and first infusion (TTNT) was determined from the Tysabri Outreach: Unified Commitment to Health (TOUCH) registry. Clinical outcomes were defined using neuroperformance tests included in the Multiple Sclerosis Performance Test. Associations were tested using TTNT as a categorical and continuous variable. Linear mixed models addressed within-subject and within-site clustering.
RESULTS: TTNT varied from 0.1 to 19.8 years (median [interquartile range] 4.2 [1.8, 9.0] years). A significant association between later natalizumab use and worse outcomes was demonstrated for walking speed (p \u3c 0.001), processing speed (p \u3c 0.001), manual dexterity (p \u3c 0.001), brain atrophy (p = 0.001), and T2 lesion volume (p = 0.02). Covariate-adjusted modelling of a sensitivity population diagnosed with MS in 2006 or later (n = 424) demonstrated significant associations between longer TTNT and worse walking speed (p \u3c 0.05), processing speed (p \u3c 0.001), and manual dexterity (p \u3c 0.001).
CONCLUSION: Later initiation of natalizumab was associated with worse clinical and radiologic imaging outcomes. Thus, high-efficacy DMT may have greater benefit when started earlier in MS patients. These results provide a rationale for randomized controlled trials to further assess the impact of early highly-effective DMT use versus later escalation of therapy
LSST: from Science Drivers to Reference Design and Anticipated Data Products
(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in
the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of
science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will
have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is
driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking
an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and
mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at
Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m
effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel
camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second
exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given
night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000
square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5
point-source depth in a single visit in will be (AB). The
project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations
by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg with
, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, ,
covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time
will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a
18,000 deg region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the
anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to . The
remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a
Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. The goal is to make LSST data products,
including a relational database of about 32 trillion observations of 40 billion
objects, available to the public and scientists around the world.Comment: 57 pages, 32 color figures, version with high-resolution figures

The process of recovery of people with mental illness: The perspectives of patients, family members and care providers: Part 1

Abstract

Background

It is a qualitative design study that examines points of divergence and convergence in the perspectives on recovery of 36 participants or 12 triads. Each triad comprising a patient, a family member/friend, a care provider and documents the procedural, analytic of triangulating perspectives as a means of understanding the recovery process which is illustrated by four case studies. Variations are considered as they relate to individual characteristics, type of participant (patient, family, member/friend and care provider), and mental illness. This paper which is part of a larger study and is based on a qualitative research design documents the process of recovery of people with mental illness: Developing a Model of Recovery in Mental Health: A middle range theory.

Methods

Data were collected in field notes through semi-structured interviews based on three interview guides (one for patients, one for family members/friends, and one for caregivers). Cross analysis and triangulation methods were used to analyse the areas of convergence and divergence on the recovery process of all triads.

Results

In general, with the 36 participants united in 12 triads, two themes emerge from the cross-analysis process or triangulation of data sources (12 triads analysis in 12 cases studies). Two themes emerge from the analysis process of the content of 36 interviews with participants: (1) <it>Revealing dynamic context</it>, situating patients in their dynamic context; and (2) <it>Relationship issues in a recovery process</it>, furthering our understanding of such issues. We provide four case studies examples (among 12 cases studies) to illustrate the variations in the way recovery is perceived, interpreted and expressed in relation to the different contexts of interaction.

Conclusion

The perspectives of the three participants (patients, family members/friends and care providers) suggest that recovery depends on constructing meaning around mental illness experiences and that the process is based on each person's dynamic context (e.g., social network, relationship), life experiences and other social determinants (e.g., symptoms, environment). The findings of this study add to existing knowledge about the determinants of the recovery of persons suffering with a mental illness and significant other utilizing public mental health services in Montreal, Canada.</p
