    Finding the rainbow: reflections upon recruiting openly gay men for qualitative research

    It has been suggested that greater attention needs be paid to the methods used when engaging in research with gay men, including enhanced focus on methods of recruitment. Pursuant to that argument, this manuscript reflects upon the methods of recruitment used in research about gay men, and the importance of recruitment with regards to research validity and reliability. It is argued that recruitment is best conceptualised as a dynamic process which influences the entire research program, rather than a static event, as recruitment is often characterised in the literature. The authors then engage in a critical self-reflection regarding the recruitment methods used in their body of research about gay men. Issues related to cyber-recruitment, emic and etic, and inclusion criteria are discussed

    Digitization protocols and applications for laser scanning human bone in forensic anthropology

    In medico-legal investigations involving unidentified skeletal remains, forensic anthropologists commonly assist law enforcement and medical examiners in their analysis and identification. The traditional documentation techniques employed by the forensic anthropologist during their analysis include notes, photographs, measurements and radiographic images. However, relevant visual information of the skeleton can be lacking in morphological details in 2D images. By creating a 3D representation of individual bones using a laser-scanner, it would be possible to overcome this limitation. Now that laser scanners have become increasingly affordable, this technology should be incorporated in the documentation methodologies of forensic anthropology laboratories. Unfortunately, this equipment is rarely used in forensic anthropology casework. The goal of this project is to investigate the possible visualization applications that can be created from digitized surface models of bone for use in medico-legal investigations. This research will be achieved in two phases. First, examples of human bone as well as replicas of bone will be scanned using a NextEngineâ„¢ laser scanner. In conjunction with this will be the exploration and documentation of protocols for scanning different bone types and processing the scan data for creating a 3D model. The second phase will investigate how the resulting 3D model can be used in lieu of the actual remains to achieve improved documentation methodologies through the use of several commercial computer graphics programs. The results demonstrate that an array of visual applications can be easily created from a 3D file of bone, including virtual curation, measurement, illustration and the virtual reconstruction of fragmented bone. Based on the findings of this project, the implementation of laser scanning technology is recommended for forensic anthropology labs to enhance documentation, analysis and presentation of human bone

    Distinction du rôle du psychoéducateur de celui du travailleur social dans un contexte de travail en équipe collaborative

    Dans cette étude exploratoire, descriptive, nous tentons d'abord, à l'aide de la méthodologie Q, de décrire la perception que les psychoéducateurs et les travailleurs sociaux ont de leurs rôles spécialisés respectifs, de voir comment ces perceptions se différencient dans le contexte de la pratique en équipe de travail collaborative et de découvrir comment elles sont liées à celles du fonctionnement de l'équipe. Ensuite, nous tentons de voir comment ces professionnels perçoivent leur identité professionnelle et ce qui la caractérise. 45 psychoéducateurs et 34 travailleurs sociaux (n=79) ont participé à l'étude. Les résultats permettent d'observer un groupe de travailleurs sociaux et deux groupes distincts de psychoéducateurs. La discussion amène l'hypothèse de l'émergence d'un mouvement de mutation quant à la perception des rôles du psychoéducateur et la présence d'une ambiguïté quant à l'identité professionnelle des deux professions étudiées

    Multiple FLC haplotypes defined by independent cis-regulatory variation underpin life history diversity in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Relating molecular variation to phenotypic diversity is a central goal in evolutionary biology. In Arabidopsis thaliana, FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) is a major determinant of variation in vernalization—the acceleration of flowering by prolonged cold. Here, through analysis of 1307 A. thaliana accessions, we identify five predominant FLC haplotypes defined by noncoding sequence variation. Genetic and transgenic experiments show that they are functionally distinct, varying in FLC expression level and rate of epigenetic silencing. Allelic heterogeneity at this single locus accounts for a large proportion of natural variation in vernalization that contributes to adaptation of A. thaliana

    Ultra-High-Density QTL Marker Mapping for Seedling Photomorphogenesis Mediating Arabidopsis Establishment in Southern Patagonia

    Arabidopsis thaliana shows a wide range of genetic and trait variation among wild accessions. Because of its unparalleled biological and genomic resources, Arabidopsis has a high potential for the identification of genes underlying ecologically important complex traits, thus providing new insights on genome evolution. Previous research suggested that distinct light responses were crucial for Arabidopsis establishment in a peculiar ecological niche of southern Patagonia. The aim of this study was to explore the genetic basis of contrasting light-associated physiological traits that may have mediated the rapid adaptation to this new environment. From a biparental cross between the photomorphogenic contrasting accessions Patagonia (Pat) and Columbia (Col-0), we generated a novel recombinant inbred line (RIL) population, which was entirely next-generation sequenced to achieve ultra-high-density saturating molecular markers resulting in supreme mapping sensitivity. We validated the quality of the RIL population by quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping for seedling de-etiolation, finding seven QTLs for hypocotyl length in the dark and continuous blue light (Bc), continuous red light (Rc), and continuous far-red light (FRc). The most relevant QTLs, Rc1 and Bc1, were mapped close together to chromosome V; the former for Rc and Rc/dark, and the latter for Bc, FRc, and dark treatments. The additive effects of both QTLs were confirmed by independent heterogeneous inbred families (HIFs), and we explored TZP and ABA1 as potential candidate genes for Rc1 and Bc1QTLs, respectively. We conclude that the Pat × Col-0 RIL population is a valuable novel genetic resource to explore other adaptive traits in Arabidopsis.Fil: Matsusaka Quiliano, Daniel Claudio.     "Appearance potent"? A content analysis of UK gay and straight men's magazines.

    With little actual appraisal, a more 'appearance potent' (i.e., a reverence for appearance ideals) subculture has been used to explain gay men's greater body dissatisfaction in comparison to straight men's. This study sought to assess the respective appearance potency of each subculture by a content analysis of 32 issues of the most read gay (Attitude, Gay Times) and straight men's magazines (Men's Health, FHM) in the UK. Images of men and women were coded for their physical characteristics, objectification and nudity, as were the number of appearance adverts and articles. The gay men's magazines featured more images of men that were appearance ideal, nude and sexualized than the straight men's magazines. The converse was true for the images of women and appearance adverts. Although more research is needed to understand the effect of this content on the viewer, the findings are consistent with a more appearance potent gay male subculture
