Pricing contingent claims on credit and carbon single and multiple underlying assets

This thesis proposes alternative ways to price contingent claims written on portfolios of credit instruments as well as on carbon underlying assets. On the first topic of this research we tackle the pricing of Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDOs) by introducing two different approaches through the application of respectively Johnson SB distributions and entropy optimization principles, in contrast to market standard pricing approaches based on variations of the Gaussian copula model. The relevance of this topic is in line with the events that unfolded during the “credit crunch” of mid-2007 to early 2009, when CDOs made headlines as being responsible for more than $542 billion in losses through writedowns by financial institutions. On the second topic we propose a pricing methodology for Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement (ERPA) contracts. These are instruments based on carbon as an asset class and created by the emergence of an international carbon market that followed the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol (KP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in December 1997. ERPAs are of vital importance to the function of KP’s market mechanisms and the carbon markets at large as they formalize transactions of emissions reduction offsets between sellers and buyers, more specifically transactions involving Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). We propose a pricing methodology based on stochastic modeling of CER volume delivery risk and carbon prices as the two main drivers underlying ERPAs, and apply it to a case study on a run-of-river hydro power CDM project activity in China

A vulnerabilidade externa da economia brasileira no período 1974-1980: uma análise empírica

Analisa a evolução da vulnerabilidade externa na economia brasileira entre 1974-1980, período que teve como marco o início da implementação do Segundo Plano Nacional de Desenvolvimento (II PND). Para isso, o estudo utiliza três indicadores sintéticos para analisar as condições de solvência externa – a capacidade de um país em saldar seu passivo externo no longo prazo – e um parâmetro para averiguar as condições de liquidez externa, isto é, se um país possuí reservas cambiais suficientes para quitar seus débitos com prazos de maturação de curto prazo. Os indicadores de solvência externa empregados são: passivo externo líquido sobre exportações de bens e serviços, dívida externa líquida sobre exportações de bens e serviços e deficit de transações correntes sobre exportações de bens e serviços. Já o parâmetro de liquidez externa usado é a dívida externa de curto prazo sobre reservas internacionais. Todos os indicadores sintéticos propostos apresentaram um aumento da vulnerabilidade externa no período em estudo, com a exceção do último parâmetro listado de solvência externa. E mesmo o indicador que apresenta melhora do endividamento externo, apresenta um deficit em conta-corrente elevado no final do ano de 1980

Violência doméstica infantil e desenvolvimento de habilidades: evidências para o Chile

This study investigates the relationship between the use of violence by parents and the development of children’s cognitive and non-cognitive skills. The data used are from the panel formed by the 2012 and 2017 rounds of textit Encuesta Longitudinal de Primera Infancia (ELPI), a national survey, which follows the development of successive cohorts of children throughout their childhood and adolescence. The empirical strategy is based on estimating a fixed effect panel model, based on the human capital formation model. Except the case of age heterogeneous effect, the violence index is only related to non-cognitive skills, and this correlation is mainly associated with psychological violence. An increase of 1 point in the total violence index increases the test of non-cognitive skills by 1.75 points or 0.175 standard deviation.Este trabalho investiga a relação entre o uso da violência por parte dos pais e o desenvolvimento de habilidades cognitivas e não cognitivas dos filhos. Os dados utilizados são do painel formado pelas rodadas de 2012 e 2017 da Encuesta Longitudinal de Primera Infancia (ELPI), pesquisa de caráter nacional, que acompanha o desenvolvimento de sucessivas coortes de crianças ao longo de sua infância e adolescência. A estratégia empírica baseia-se na estimação de um modelo de efeito fixo de tempo e indivíduo. Com exceção do efeito heterogêneo para idade, o índice de violência tem relação somente com as habilidades não cognitivas, sendo essa correlação associada, principalmente, à violência psicológica. Towards the total synthesis of amphidinolide T family

Amphidinolides T are challenging natural targets for the total synthesis community because of their unique structural architecture. This thesis describes the investigations of the establishment of a novel and convenient route to synthesise four members of the natural product family, amphidinolides T1 and T3-5, from a common late-stage intermediate. The key transformations towards the synthetic pathway are ring formation reactions. The trans-tetrahydrofuran ring is forged efficiently via diastereoselective [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of an oxonium ylide from diazo-generated metal carbenoids. Coupling of a side chain is achieved using a sequence of esterification and RCM reactions. Alternatively, a one-pot RCM followed by hydrogenation is described to shorten the synthetic route

Utilización de un algoritmo de encriptación aplicado a la Comunicación Humano-Robot.

Se implementó un algoritmo de encriptación aplicado a la comunicación humano–robot para garantizar la seguridad de información transmitida, para ayudar a proteger la transferencia de información por medio de una aplicación de software, utilizando el algoritmo criptográfico seleccionado como método de encriptación de datos fue el algoritmo asimétrico HASH y dentro de éste se optó por el método SHA-256; logrando mitigar ataques a la transmisión de datos. Se ha desarrollado una aplicación de software con el lenguaje de programación PHP y arduino para la simulación de los movimientos izquierda y derecha por medio de un dispositivo electrónico arduino, ethernetshield y microservo induciéndole un ataque básico a la transferencia de la información para su respectiva comunicación. La elaboración del prototipo demuestra un aumento significativo de los niveles de seguridad en un 1.8 veces mejor con respecto a la implementación del software en la transferencia de datos mediante la encriptación de la información con el algoritmo SHA-256. Con la utilización de algoritmos criptográficos que existen en la actualidad se concluyó que se puede mejorar el nivel de seguridad de la información que será transmitida por cualquier medio de comunicación y asegurar la integridad de la transferencia de datos con la creación de certificados de seguridad SSL. Se recomienda realizar sistemas de interacción humano-robot mediante la utilización de voz como medio de comunicación y así proporcionar la posibilidad de una comunicación más natural con los robots como trabajo futuro.Implemented an encryption algorithm applied to human-robot communication to ensure the security of transmitted information, to help protect the transfer of information through a software application, using the algorithm Cryptographic selected as a data encryption method was the asymmetric hash algorithm and within it was opted for the SHA-256 method; Managing to mitigate attacks on data transmission. It has developed a software application with the programming language PHP and Arduino for the simulation of the movements left and right by means of an electronic device Arduino, Ethernetshield and Micro servo inducing a basic attack on the Transfer of information for their respective communication. Prototype development demonstrates a significant increase in security levels by 1.8 times better with respect to software implementation in data transfer by encrypting information with the SHA – 256 algorithms. With the use of cryptographic algorithms that exist today it was concluded that one can improve the level of security of the information that will be transmitted by any means of communication and ensure the integrity of the data transfer with the Creating SSL security certificates. It is recommended to perform systems of human-robot interaction through the use of voice as a means of communication and thus provide the possibility of a more natural communication with robots as future work

Ecologia e deposição sedimentar em um testemunho da Lagoa Pires, Jurubatiba, RJ

No presente trabalho, o testemunho da lagoa Pires localizado no Parque Nacional (PARNA) da Restinga de Jurubatiba foi analisado para estudo dos foraminíferos bentônicos, sendo relacionado ao seu perfil granulométrico a fim de se conhecer padrões ecológicos, paleoecológicos e de deposição sedimentar. Foraminíferos bentônicos são importantes indicadores ambientais, pois caracterizam aspectos físicos e químicos do ambiente onde vivem. Em laboratório, o testemunho foi aberto e subamostrado a cada 2 cm. As amostras foram padronizadas e lavadas individualmente em peneiras de 63 e 500 μm e, logo após, foram colocadas para secar em estufa a 50º C. Em cada amostra foram triados em torno de 100 indivíduos e, após a triagem, os foraminíferos foram classificados em espécies. Índices ecológicos e resultados de Carbono Orgânico Total (COT) complementaram as análises. No testemunho foi observada uma diminuição da riqueza e da diversidade da base para o topo. A associação Ammonia/Elphidium sugere um ambiente confinado, lagunar porém com influência marinha. Ao longo de todo o testemunho os indivíduos encontram-se piritizados. Os valores de COT foram baixo por todo o testemunho, não tendo relação com a granulometria e a microfauna. A datação na base correspondeu a um período de transgressão holocênica. Espécies marinhas de plataforma estão presentes ao longo do testemunho, provavelmente tendo sido transportadas devido a tempestades e ondas e correntes de maré. Em todo o testemunho, os dados analisados sugerem um ambiente marinho na base, com variação de salinidade, havendo influência marinha por todo testemunho
