Building the "black" city: approaches developed by Portuguese architects in colonial Africa

In the final period of Portuguese colonization (1945-1975), architects faced a challenge: to build the city for the local populations. This paper intends to explain the process of discovery of the native settlements and how its study contributed to develop a "black" city planned by architects. From the late 1950s on, the urban space and housing for the African populations is one of the main architectural and urban programs carried by Portuguese architects in Africa. Facing the fact of being economically impracticable and culturally undesirable to build neighbourhoods for the "native" population in a European canon, architects start to survey the African habitat in missions. The African house is one of the most studied subjects

This final work was the result of a curiosity that took form in the course of the Laboratório de Cultura Arquitectónica Contemporânea (Laboratory of Contemporanean Architectural Culture), either by the research of the different works from the Atelier Conceição Silva – by his contextual insertion in the architectural panorama (practical and theoretical), european and portuguese, in the 60s and 70s of the last century –, either by the interview held to the architect Tomás Taveira, collaborator in this atelier between 1965 and 1972. The goal of this essay was to seek out and understand the main influences of the english architecture in the work of the Atelier Conceição Silva. Poruguese pioneer in the “discover” of the brutalist architecture, this atelier has conducted numerous works, many of them comparable in importance with internacional projects. The work methodology has consisted in an investigation focused in the work analised in group at the referred laboratory: the Torres de Alfragide. It was sought out, through the analysis of british projects, the direct or indirect influences of them in the portuguese building. For this propose it was realized a trip to the United Kingdom, already in possession of the necessary elements for a photographic survey and to perfom a circuit of travel, the could be done by portuguese architects which visited the british country in those decades. To support this work, the bibliography was based in both research works and in specific architects, as well as in theoretical readings that support the aesthetic and functional options taken at the time. It was fundamental to understand either the nacional panorama as well as the internacional, mainly through the discussions, articles and published projects in periodic publications, Portuguese and foreign

Position of the Polar Front along the western Iberian margin during key cold episodes of the last 45 ka

This paper documents the migration of the Polar Front (PF) over the Iberian margin during some of the cold climatic extremes of the last 45 ka. It is based on a compilation of robust and coherent paleohydrological proxies obtained from eleven cores distributed between 36 and 42°N. Planktonic δ18O (Globigerina bulloides), ice-rafted detritus concentrations, and the relative abundance of the polar foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma sinistral were used to track the PF position. These three data sets, compared from core to core, show a consistent evolution of the sea surface paleohydrology along the Iberian margin over the last 45 ka. We focused on five time slices representative of cold periods under distinct paleoenvironmental forcings: the 8.2 ka event and the Younger Dryas (two recent cold events occurring within high values of summer insolation), Heinrich events 1 and 4 (reflecting major episodes of massive iceberg discharges into the North Atlantic), and the Last Glacial Maximum (typifying the highest ice volume accumulated in the Northern Hemisphere). For each event, we generated schematic maps mirroring past sea surface hydrological conditions. The maps revealed that the Polar Front presence along the Iberian margin was restricted to Heinrich events. The sea surface conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum were close to those at present day, except for the northern sites which briefly experienced subarctic conditions

Women Architects in Portugal: Working in Colonial Africa before the Carnation Revolution (1950–1974)

How did women architects shape a modern world in the late period of Portuguese colonial Africa, just before the Carnation Revolution? The specific role of women in Portugal working in colonial African architectural culture has now started to be addressed by Portuguese and Lusophone-African historiography. During the 1950s, the presence of women in the metropolitan schools of architecture was reduced. Of those who could graduate, few actually worked as architects. Most were absorbed by the commonly feminine roles, resulting from marriage and from the ideal of family promoted by the Estado Novo dictatorship. To the ones that risked prosecution for working outside the family, the option of jobs associated with the feminine universe, such as teaching, was privileged. Among those who were emancipated from this pattern, the majority worked in familiar partnerships, regarded as an extension of marriage. The women architects that follow the husbands in their African emigration often ended up having the opportunities to work in their professional field partly due to the lack of qualified technicians, and to the high demand of commissions. This paper not only seeks to outline a perspective on these women, but also tries to understand the context of their work by presenting two case-studies in the late in the late period of Portuguese Colonisation: Maria Carlota Quintanilha and Maria Emilia Caria

Efacec is a company that has undergone several changes, going from being a small industrial company to the largest group in the electric field. Its core emphases are the international market among its constant investment in innovation and new technologies. Furthermore, it has a highly skilled workforce resulting in a persistent position at the forefront of the sectors where it develops its activities. The goal of this project is to determine the intrinsic value of Efacec's shares, through a detailed analysis of the operational performance of the company, its external environment and its growth prospects. The valuation was based on the Free Cash Flow to Firm method, which according to the literature review represents the best method to assess Efacec. According to the assumptions defined, the firm value of Efacec is 401.666.793 euros and the equity value is 12.457.793 euros (0,30 euros per share). Since Efacec is not a quoted company the Price Earnings Ratio multiple was used to decide whether or not if investors should buy the shares. Taking this into account, the indicator for Efacec of 1,51 is extremely low when compared with its peer group (14,60). Consequently, Efacec's share price is undervalued, despite being considered one of the largest Portuguese multinationals. Thus the recommendation is not to buy Efacec shares
