Surrogate-based optimization of tidal turbine arrays: a case study for the Faro-Olhão inlet

This paper presents a study for estimating the size of a tidal turbine array for the Faro-Olhão Inlet (Potugal) using a surrogate optimization approach. The method compromises problem formulation, hydro-morphodynamic modelling, surrogate construction and validation, and constraint optimization. A total of 26 surrogates were built using linear RBFs as a function of two design variables: number of rows in the array and Tidal Energy Converters (TECs) per row. Surrogates describe array performance and environmental effects associated with hydrodynamic and morphological aspects of the multi inlet lagoon. After validation, surrogate models were used to formulate a constraint optimization model. Results evidence that the largest array size that satisfies performance and environmental constraints is made of 3 rows and 10 TECs per row.Eduardo González-Gorbeña has received funding for the OpTiCA project (http://msca-optica.eu/) from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the European Union's H2020-MSCA-IF-EF-RI-2016 / GA#: 748747. The current study analyse the physical activity and  sport registered and the intention of being physically active in the future in a sample of university students from the first level of the bachelor of primary education at the faculty of education (Badajoz) by sex. We have started with these variables due to a high percentage of adolescents that do not meet the recommendations of physical activity, showing a high prevalence of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior, prioritising another tasks or personal, academic or laboral activities. That study has been done under the quantitative paradigm with an associative, descriptive, comparative and cross strategy using the MIFAU questionnaire plus an ad-hoc questionnaire to know the participant’s sociodemographic information. The sample was integrated by 170 participants (64.7% female and 35.3% male). Women showed less weekly physical activity in comparison with men with an intermediate effect size (U=2271.5; p smaller than 0.05; d=0.532) and the same if we compare that variable with the intention of being physically active in the future with a higher effect size (U=1754; p smaller than 0.05; d=0.828).La presente investigación analiza la cantidad de actividad físico - deportiva realizada y la intención de ser físicamente activo en el futuro, en una muestra de estudiantes universitarios del primer curso del Grado en Educación Primaria de la Facultad de Educación (Badajoz) en función del sexo.

Agility is a key component of physical fitness in adolescents. However, the measurement of this variable is usually complex, requiring high cost instruments and complex software. To test the validity and reliabilityof a novel iPhone app (Lap Tracker Auto-timer) to measure agility performance among adolescents.Twenty-four physically active adolescents (15.7 ± 2.3 years old) participated in two testing sessions (separated by 7 days). They performed three 4 x 10 m agility test trials measured by Photocell or the iPhone app.The correlation analysis revealed high validity (r = .92; 95% confidence interval [CI] = .88 –.95), with a standard error of the estimate of 0.56 s (p < 0.001). The coefficient of variation (CV; 0.09) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC; .93; 95% CI = .85 –.97) showed an acceptable reliability. This study demonstrated that the iPhone App Lap Tracker Auto-timer could be a valid, reliable and low-cost tool to evaluate agility performance in adolescents. However, more studies are required to guarantee the utility of this app

Basketball game-related statistics that discriminate between teams season-long success

    Get PDF
The aim of the present study was to identify the game-related statistics that discriminate between season-long successful and unsuccessful basketball teams participating in the Spanish Basketball League (LEB1). The sample included all 145 average records per season from the 870 games played between the 2000-2001 and the 2005-2006 regular seasons. The following game-related statistics were gathered from the official box scores of the Spanish Basketball Federation: 2- and 3-point field-goal attempts (both successful and unsuccessful), free-throws (both successful and unsuccessful), defensive and offensive rebounds, assists, steals, turnovers, blocks (both made and received), and fouls (both committed and received). To control for season variability, all results were normalized to minutes played each season and then converted to z-scores. The results allowed discrimination between best and worst teams' performances through the following game-related statistics: assists (SC=0.47), steals (SC=0.34), and blocks (SC=0.30). The function obtained correctly classified 82.4% of the cases. In conclusion, season-long performance may be supported by players' and teams' passing skills and defensive preparation

    Get PDF
This paper examines the relationship between burnout and perceived social support in a sample of 801 Primary School teachers. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Duke-UNC-11 questionnaire were used. The statistical method used was canonical correspondence analysis, where the linear combination of the social support factors that maximises the dispersion of values of the three dimensions of the MBI was selected. The results of the study show that perceived social support relates to each of the dimensions of burnout syndrome in a different way and that is key to restore psychosocial balance.
