Facial nerve identification with fluorescent dye in rats

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: The parotidectomy technique still has an elevated paresis and paralysis index, lowering patient life's quality. The correct identification of the facial nerve can prevent nerve damage. Fluorescent dye identifies nerves in experimental studies but only few articles focused its use on facial nerve study in parotidectomies. We aimed to stain the rat facial nerve with fluorescent dye to facilitate visualization and dissection in order to prevent injuries. METHODS: Forty adult male Wistar rats were submitted to facial injection of saline solution (Gsf-control group, 10) or fluorescent dye solution (Gdye group, 30) followed by parotidectomy preserving the facial nerve, measuring the time for localization and facility of localization (LocTime and LFN). Nerve function was assessed using the Vibrissae Movements (PMV) and Eyelid Closure Motion (PFP) scores. RESULTS: Nerve localization was faster in Gdye group, with 83% Easy LFN rate. The Gdye group presented with low nerve injury degree and better PMV and PFP scores, with high sensitivity and accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: This experimental method of facial nerve fluorescence was effective for intraoperative nerve visualization, identification and preservation. The technique may be used in future facial nerve studies, translated to humans, contributing to the optimization of parotid surgery in the near future.CAPESUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, Head & Neck Surg Div, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Neurophysiol Lab, Dept Physiol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Expt Models Dev Ctr CEDEME, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Transgen Lab, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Neurophysiol Lab, Dept Physiol, Postgrad Program Neurosci & Neurol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, Head & Neck Surg Div, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Neurophysiol Lab, Dept Physiol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Expt Models Dev Ctr CEDEME, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Transgen Lab, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Neurophysiol Lab, Dept Physiol, Postgrad Program Neurosci & Neurol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc

Atmospheric natural disasters can have their damage mitigated if meteorological alerts are disseminated on time Among the ways to get data related to weather conditions are the use of atmospheric profilers and numerical models Such resources can be used for studies related to the surface layer which covers a range from 20 to 200 meters below the low troposphere In order to make atmospheric experiments achievable without great financial expenditure a low-cost atmospheric profiler was developed together with the Laboratory of Monitoring and Numerical Modeling of Climate Systems LAMMOC of the Federal Fluminense University UFF to be on board a drone and based on prototyping with Arduino which had as sensors the DHT22 for measuring temperature and relative humidity and the BMP280 for measuring atmospheric pressure Thus this profiler was used in an experiment from which atmospheric vertical profiles were generated and compared with profiles generated by the numerical model Weather Research and Forecasting WRF and post-processed by the WRF-Python routines package As a result it was noticed that the observed data profiles described a behavior of the surface layer that indicates the occurrence of thermal inversion and change of regime of this layer from the stable passing through the neutral to the unstable With this it is evaluated that the method of using this profiler can be applied in several atmospheric studies such as atmospheric pollution and nowcasting weather forecast as well as its potential for use in areas such as operational meteorology and assimilation of data from numerical models shows to be promisin

Evaluation of s355nl Steel Welded by Flux Cored Arc Welding Using Different Tubular Wires

High strength low alloy (HSLA) steels are used in several industrial sectors, as they have good mechanical strength and easy weldability. This HSLA is present in several areas, such as naval, petrochemical, piping, and civil construction. S355 NL steel is HSLA grade and has its application in the manufacture of the Brazilian submarine. For the manufacture and finishing of a Brazilian submarine, countless welds are performed during the assembly steps. The welding process currently applied is FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding), and the currently applied filler metal is of French origin. However, this import, from France to Brazil, makes manufacturing costs high and the waiting time for the imported product to arrive is long. Thus, in this work, the idea was to characterize a national filler metal (Brazilian) that similarly maintained the microstructure and consequently its mechanical and electrochemical properties concerning the imported filler metal (French). Therefore, the present work aimed at the microstructural, mechanical, and electrochemical characterization of S355NL structural steel welded by the FCAW process with national tubular wire (Brazilian) and imported tubular wire (French). We performed microstructural characterization with the aid of optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For the mechanical characterization, we performed the following tests: tensile test, Vickers hardness, and impact at room temperature and -40ºC. In the electrochemical characterization, it generated polarization curves where the samples were exposed to a 3.5% NaCl solution to test the behavior in corrosive media. The results showed that the wires, national and imported, behaved homogeneously and uniformly concerning the mechanical properties. In the electrochemical part, the national material presented in the weld metal a corrosion current density interesting. Therefore, the national tubular wire is a promising filler metal for the welding application of this Brazilian submarine

A checklist of the amphibians of Santa Teresa municipality, in southeastern Brazil is presented based on fieldwork, examination of specimens in collections, and a literature review. This new amphibian list of Santa Teresa includes 108 species, of which 106 (~98%) belong to Anura and two (~2%) to Gymnophiona. Hylidae was the most represented family with 47 species (43%). Compared to the previous amphibian lists for Santa Teresa, 14 species were added, 17 previously reported species were removed, and 13 species were re-identified based on recent taxonomic rearrangements. Of the 14 species added, 11 (79%) were first recorded during our fieldwork and specimen examination. It is also the first list of caecilians for Santa Teresa. This list suggests that Santa Teresa has 0.16 species per km2 (i.e., 108 species/683 km2), one of the highest densities of amphibian species in the world at a regional scale. This richness represents 78% of the 136 anurans from Espírito Santo state and 10% of the 1,080 amphibians from Brazil. We highlight the need for long-term monitoring to understand population trends and develop effective conservation plans to safeguard this remarkable amphibian richness

Recurrent water deficit causes epigenetic and hormonal changes in citrus plants

    Get PDF
The present study evaluated the physiological, molecular and hormonal parameters from scion/rootstock interaction of citrus plants during recurrent water deficit. Responses of the Valencia (VO) scion variety grafted on two rootstocks with different soil water extraction capacities, Rangpur Lime (RL) and Sunki Maravilha (SM), during three successive periods of water deficit: plants exposed to a single episode of water deficit (WD1) and plants exposed to two (WD2) and three (WD3) recurrent periods of WD were compared. The combinations VO/RL and VO/SM presented polymorphic alterations of epigenetic marks and hormonal (i.e. abscisic acid, auxins and salicylicacid) profiles, which were particularly prominent when VO/SM plantswere exposed toWD3 treatment. Upon successive drought events, the VO/SM combination presented acclimatization characteristics that enable higher tolerance to water deficit by increasing transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g s ) and photosynthetic rate (A), which in turn may have facilitated the whole plant survival. Besides providing comprehensive data on the scion/rootstock interactions upon successive stress events, this study brings the first dataset suggesting that epigenetic alterations in citrus plants triggered by recurrent water deficit lead to improved drought tolerance in this crop species.
