    Incentives and inhibiting factors of eco-innovation in the Spanish firms.

    This paper investigates the incentives and inhibiting factors of eco-innovation capacities in the firm. Firms materialize the objectives of eco-innovation from a reactive attitude to external pressures, to a more proactive attitude that implies the voluntary incorporation of eco-innovation activities. This variability in the behaviour of companies with respect to the level of eco-innovation development has been a motivator for the research. However, despite the importance of this research question, this has been approached in a dispersed way from multiple approaches. From a dynamic capabilities perspective, we assume that the innovation capacity of the firm encourages eco-innovations. Our paper is focused on the process of eco-innovation, identifying the elements that facilitate or hinder the eco-innovation in the firm. We study the Spanish case, using a panel from the Spanish Innovation Survey, with a sample of 5,461 Spanish firms. The results highlight that the complexity of the eco-innovation process negatively affects the decision to develop eco-innovations. However, our results suggest that institutions and organizations of the Spanish environment are making efforts to compensate these obstacles and provide incentives to develop eco-innovations

    En la presente investigación se explica sobre el “El efecto del Covid-19 en la rentabilidad de las Pymes en el Distrito de Lima, 2021”. Metodología de enfoque cuantitativo, con tipo de investigación básica, nivel descriptivo correlacional, de diseño no experimental de corte transversal. La población y la muestra estuvo conformada por 50 trabajadores. La problemática actual que viene afectando duramente la economía y no solo en nuestro país sino también a muchos otros, originados por la crisis sanitaria del Covid - 19 que llegó de manera inesperada en el 2020 poniendo en riesgo la subsistencia de los negocios ya que a raíz de esa enfermedad utilizaron medidas cautelares como el confinamiento, hecho no favorable puesto que la mayoría de empresas paralizaron sus actividades laborales estancando su productividad e incrementando sus cuentas por pagar. Para ello es importante contar con estrategias que permitan respaldar y solventar los altibajos generados y obligaciones de pagos por las cuales vienen pasando los emprendedores de hoy en día; revitalizando la actividad empresarial y el estatus económico a nivel nacional

    Prediction of standard particleboard mechanical properties utilizing an artificial neural network and subsequent comparison with a multivariate regression model

    The physical properties (specific gravity, moisture content, thickness swelling and water absorption) and mechanical properties (internal bond strength, bending strength and modulus of elasticity) were determined on 93 Spanish-manufactured standard particleboards of different thicknesses selected randomly at the end of the production process. The testing methods of the corresponding European standards (EN) were used, except in the case of the thickness swelling and absorption tests, for which the Spanish UNE standard was used. The thickness and the values obtained for the physical properties were entered into an artificial neural network in order to predict the mechanical properties of the board. The fit was compared with the usual multivariate regression models. The use of a neural network made it possible to obtain the values of bending strength, modulus of elasticity and internal bond strength of the boards utilizing the known data, not only of thickness, moisture content and specific gravity, but also of thickness swelling and water absorption. The neural network proposed is much better adapted to the observed values than any of the multivariate regression models obtained

    Chondromodulin-I expression in the growth plate of young uremic rats.BackgroundGrowth retardation of chronic renal failure is associated with alterations in the growth plate suggestive of a disturbed chondrocyte maturation process and abnormal vascular invasion at the chondro-osseous interphase. Chondromodulin I (ChM-I) is a potent cartilage-specific angiostatic factor. Its pattern of expression in the uremic rat growth plate is unknown. Persistence of ChM-I synthesis and/or imbalance between ChM-I and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expressions might play a role in the alterations of uremic growth plate.MethodsGrowth cartilage ChM-I expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in growth-retarded young uremic rats (UREM), control rats, fed ad libitum (SAL) or pair-fed with the UREM group (SPF), and uremic rats treated with growth hormone (UREM-GH). VEGF expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry.ResultsChM-I and ChM-I mRNA were confined to the proliferative and early hypertrophic zones of growth cartilage. A similar number of chondrocytes per column was positive for ChM-I in the 4 groups. In accordance with the elongation of the hypertrophic stratum in uremia, the distance (X±SEM, μm) between the extracellular ChM-I signal and the metaphyseal end of growth cartilage was higher (P < 0.003) in UREM (236 ± 40) and UREM-GH (297 ± 17) than in SAL (92 ± 7) and SPF (113 ± 6). No differences in ChM-I expression were appreciated by RT-PCR. Similar VEGF positivity was observed in the hypertrophic chondrocytes of all groups.ConclusionIn experimental uremia, expansion of growth cartilage does not result from increased or persistent expression of ChM-I or from reduced VEGF expression at the cartilage-metaphyseal bone interphase. GH treatment does not modify ChM-I and VEGF expressions

    Osteoarthritis:Mechanistic Insights, Senescence, and Novel Therapeutic Opportunities

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease. In the last years, the research community has focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that led to the pathogenesis of the disease, trying to identify different molecular and clinical phenotypes along with the discovery of new therapeutic opportunities. Different types of cell-to-cell communication mechanisms have been proposed to contribute to OA progression, including mechanisms mediated by connexin43 (Cx43) channels or by small extracellular vesicles. Furthermore, changes in the chondrocyte phenotype such as cellular senescence have been proposed as new contributors of the OA progression, changing the paradigm of the disease. The use of different drugs able to restore chondrocyte phenotype, to reduce cellular senescence and senescence-associated secretory phenotype components, and to modulate ion channel activity or Cx43 appears to be promising therapeutic strategies for the different types of OA. In this review, we aim to summarize the current knowledge in OA phenotypes related with aging and tissue damage and the new therapeutic opportunities currently available

    Effect of Camphorquinone Concentration in Physical-Mechanical Properties of Experimental Flowable Resin Composites

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of camphorquinone concentration in physical-mechanical properties of experimental flowable composites in order to find the concentration that results in maximum conversion, balanced mechanical strength, and minimum shrinkage stress. Model composites based on BISGMA/TEGDMA with 70% wt filler loading were prepared containing different concentrations of camphorquinone (CQ) on resin matrix (0.25%, 0.50%, 1%, 1.50%, and 2% by weight). Degree of conversion was determined by FTIR. Surface hardness was assessed before and after 24 h ethanol storage and softening rate was determined. Depth of cure was determined by Knoop hardness evaluation at different depths. Color was assessed by reflectance spectrophotometer, employing the CIE-Lab system. Flexural strength and elastic modulus were determined by a three-point bending test. Shrinkage stress was determined in a Universal Testing Machine in a high compliance system. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). The increase in CQ concentration caused a significant increase on flexural strength and luminosity of composites. Surface hardness was not affected by the concentration of CQ. Composite containing 0.25% wt CQ showed lower elastic modulus and shrinkage stress when compared to others. Depth of cure was 3 mm for composite containing 1% CQ and 2 mm for the other tested composites. Degree of conversion was inversely correlated with softening rate and directly correlated with elastic modulus and shrinkage stress. In conclusion, CQ concentration affects polymerization characteristics and mechanical strength of composites.     Propelling the Potential of Enterprise Linked Data in Austria. Roadmap and Report

    In times of digital transformation and considering the potential of the data-driven economy, it is crucial that data is not only made available, data sources can be trusted, but also data integrity can be guaranteed, necessary privacy and security mechanisms are in place, and data and access comply with policies and legislation. In many cases, complex and interdisciplinary questions cannot be answered by a single dataset and thus it is necessary to combine data from multiple disparate sources. However, because most data today is locked up in isolated silos, data cannot be used to its fullest potential. The core challenge for most organisations and enterprises in regards to data exchange and integration is to be able to combine data from internal and external data sources in a manner that supports both day to day operations and innovation. Linked Data is a promising data publishing and integration paradigm that builds upon standard web technologies. It supports the publishing of structured data in a semantically explicit and interlinked manner such that it can be easily connected, and consequently becomes more interoperable and useful. The PROPEL project - Propelling the Potential of Enterprise Linked Data in Austria - surveyed technological challenges, entrepreneurial opportunities, and open research questions on the use of Linked Data in a business context and developed a roadmap and a set of recommendations for policy makers, industry, and the research community. Shifting away from a predominantly academic perspective and an exclusive focus on open data, the project looked at Linked Data as an emerging disruptive technology that enables efficient enterprise data management in the rising data economy. Current market forces provide many opportunities, but also present several data and information management challenges. Given that Linked Data enables advanced analytics and decision-making, it is particularly suitable for addressing today's data and information management challenges. In our research, we identified a variety of highly promising use cases for Linked Data in an enterprise context. Examples of promising application domains include "customization and customer relationship management", "automatic and dynamic content production, adaption and display", "data search, information retrieval and knowledge discovery", as well as "data and information exchange and integration". The analysis also revealed broad potential across a large spectrum of industries whose structural and technological characteristics align well with Linked Data characteristics and principles: energy, retail, finance and insurance, government, health, transport and logistics, telecommunications, media, tourism, engineering, and research and development rank among the most promising industries for the adoption of Linked Data principles. In addition to approaching the subject from an industry perspective, we also examined the topics and trends emerging from the research community in the field of Linked Data and the Semantic Web. Although our analysis revolved around a vibrant and active community composed of academia and leading companies involved in semantic technologies, we found that industry needs and research discussions are somewhat misaligned. Whereas some foundation technologies such as knowledge representation and data creation/publishing/sharing, data management and system engineering are highly represented in scientific papers, specific topics such as recommendations, or cross-topics such as machine learning or privacy and security are marginally present. Topics such as big/large data and the internet of things are (still) on an upward trajectory in terms of attention. In contrast, topics that are very relevant for industry such as application oriented topics or those that relate to security, privacy and robustness are not attracting much attention. When it comes to standardisation efforts, we identified a clear need for a more in-depth analysis into the effectiveness of existing standards, the degree of coverage they provide with respect the foundations they belong to, and the suitability of alternative standards that do not fall under the core Semantic Web umbrella. Taking into consideration market forces, sector analysis of Linked Data potential, demand side analysis and the current technological status it is clear that Linked Data has a lot of potential for enterprises and can act as a key driver of technological, organizational, and economic change. However, in order to ensure a solid foundation for Enterprise Linked Data include there is a need for: greater awareness surrounding the potential of Linked Data in enterprises, lowering of entrance barriers via education and training, better alignment between industry demands and research activities, greater support for technology transfer from universities to companies. The PROPEL roadmap recommends concrete measures in order to propel the adoption of Linked Data in Austrian enterprises. These measures are structured around five fields of activities: "awareness and education", "technological innovation, research gaps, standardisation", "policy and legal", and "funding". Key short-term recommendations include the clustering of existing activities in order to raise visibility on an international level, the funding of key topics that are under represented by the community, and the setup of joint projects. In the medium term, we recommend the strengthening of existing academic and private education efforts via certification and to establish flagship projects that are based on national use cases that can serve as blueprints for transnational initiatives. This requires not only financial support, but also infrastructure support, such as data and services to build solutions on top. In the long term, we recommend cooperation with international funding schemes to establish and foster a European level agenda, and the setup of centres of excellence

    Designing fast-dissolving orodispersible films of amphotericin B for oropharyngeal candidiasis

    Amphotericin B possesses high activity against Candida spp. with low risk of resistance. However, Amphotericin B's high molecular weight compared to other antifungal drugs, such as miconazole and clotrimazole, and poor water solubility hampers its efficacy at the physiological conditions of the oropharyngeal cavity (saliva pH, limited volume for dissolution) and thereby limits its clinical use in oropharyngeal candidiasis. We have prepared fast-dissolving orodispersible films with high loading (1% w/w) using solvent casting that enables amphotericin B to remain solubilised in saliva in equilibrium between the monomeric and dimeric states, and able to produce a local antifungal effect. Optimisation of the amphotericin B-loaded orodispersible films was achieved by quality by design studies combining dextran and/or maltodextrin as dextrose-derived-polymer film formers with cellulose-derived film formers (hydroxypropylmethyl/hydroxypropyl cellulose in a 1:4 weight ratio), sorbitol for taste masking, microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel 200) or microcrystalline cellulose-carboxymethylcellulose sodium (Avicel CL-611) for enhancing the mechanical strength of the film, and polyethylene glycol 400 and glycerol (1:1 w/w) as plasticizers. The optimised amphotericin B orodispersible films (containing 1% AmB, 25% dextran, 25% maltodextrin, 5% sorbitol, 10% Avicel 200, 10% polyethylene glycol 400, 10% glycerol, 3% hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose acetate succinate, 12% hydroxypropyl cellulose) possessed a fast disintegration time (60 ± 3 s), quick release in artificial saliva (>80% in 10 min), high burst strength (2190 mN mm) and high efficacy against several Candida spp. (C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. krusei) (>15 mm inhibition halo). Amphotericin B orodispersible films are stable for two weeks at room temperature (25° C) and up to 1 year in the fridge. Although further toxicological and in vivo efficacy studies are required, this novel Amphotericin B orodispersible films is a promising, physicochemically stable formulation with potential wide application in clinical practice, especially for immunocompromised patients suffering from oropharyngeal candidiasis

    Risk factors for antibiotic-resistant bacteria colonisation in children with chronic complex conditions

    To assess drug-resistant bacterial colonisation rates and associated risk factors in children with complex chronic conditions admitted to a national reference unit in Spain. Cross-sectional study that included all children admitted to our unit from September 2018 to July 2019. Rectal swabs were obtained to determine multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MR-GNB) colonisation, and nasal swab to determine S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) colonisation. Medical records were reviewed. 100 children were included, with a median of four complex chronic conditions. Sixteen percent had S. aureus colonisation, including two MRSA. S. aureus colonisation was associated with technology-dependent children, while being on antibiotic prophylaxis or having undergone antibiotic therapy in the previous month were protective factors. The prevalence of MR-GNB colonisation was 27%, which was associated with immunosuppressive therapy (aOR 31; 2.02-47]; p = 0.01), antibiotic prophylaxis (aOR 4.56; 1.4-14.86; p = 0.012), previously treated skin-infections (aOR 2.9; 1.07-8.14; p = 0.03), surgery in the previous year (aOR 1.4; 1.06-1.8; p = 0.014), and hospital admission in the previous year (aOR 1.79; [1.26-2.56]; p = 0.001). The rate of S. aureus nasal colonisation in this series was not high despite the presence of chronic conditions, and few cases corresponded to MRSA.
