Disponibilidade De Antídotos No Município De Campinas, São Paulo
The lack of availability of antidotes in emergency services is a worldwide concern. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the availability of antidotes used for treating poisoning in Campinas (SP). DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional study of emergency services in Campinas, conducted in 2010-2012. METHODS: The availability, amount in stock, place of storage and access time for 26 antidotal treatments was investigated. In the hospitals, the availability of at least one complete treatment for a 70 kg adult over the first 24 hours of admission was evaluated based on stock and access recommendations contained in two international guidelines. RESULTS: 14 out of 17 functioning emergency services participated in the study, comprising pre-hospital services such as the public emergency ambulance service (SAMU; n = 1) and public emergency rooms for admissions lasting ≤ 24 hours (UPAs; n = 3), and 10 hospitals with emergency services. Six antidotes (atropine, sodium bicarbonate, diazepam, phytomenadione, flumazenil and calcium gluconate) were stocked in all the services, followed by 13 units that also stocked activated charcoal, naloxone and diphenhydramine or biperiden. No service stocked all of the recommended antidotes; only the regional Poison Control Center had stocks close to recommended (22/26 antidotal treatments). The 10 hospitals had almost half of the antidotes for starting treatments, but only one quarter of the antidotes was present with stocks sufficient for providing treatment for 24 hours. CONCLUSION: The stock of antidotes for attending poisoning emergencies in the municipality of Campinas is incomplete and needs to be improved. © 2017, Associacao Paulista de Medicina. Assessing the suitability of a range of benthic indices in the evaluation of environmental impact of fin and shellfish aquaculture located in sites across Europe
The European Union-funded ECASA project (Ecosystem Approach for Sustainable Aquaculture) studied the
impacts from aquaculture on ecosystems from northern Norway to Greece. The objectives of this investigation
were to identify quantitative indicators of the effects of aquaculture on marine communities, and to assess their
applicability over a range of ecosystems and aquaculture production systems. The study included 6 Mediterranean
and 4 Atlantic sites, 7 ofwhich produced finfish (seabream, seabass, tuna, salmon and cod), and 2 bivalve molluscs
(oysters, mussels, and clams); one site produced both fish and bivalves. Cultivation methods included finfish
cages, long-lines and trestles. Similar sampling methodologies were employed at the 10 study sites, obtaining
sediment, hydrodynamic, and benthic faunal data. The horizontal impact from organic enrichment extended 50m
from the farms, with contradictory responses in several indicators (individual abundance, biomass) and a more
consistent response of the Infaunal Trophic Index (ITI) and AZTI'sMarine Biotic Index (AMBI). By means of Partial
Redundancy Analysis, it was demonstrated that the environmental variables explained 53.2% of the variability in
the macrofaunal variables (individual abundance, species richness, diversity, AMBI and ITI), whilst the explained
variance was partialled out within three groups of variables: (i) ‘hydrography’ (depth, distance to farm, average
current speed), which explained 11.5% of the variance; (ii) ‘sediment’ (Eh and percentages of silt and total organic
matter), which explained 5.4%; and (iii) ‘cages’ (years of production and annual production), which explained
15.2%. The shared variance explained by interactions among these groups was 21.1%. These results, together with
multiple regression analysis, provide an accurate assessment of the degree of impact from aquaculture. In
conclusion, the use of several benthic indicators, in assessing farm impacts, together with the investigation of
dynamics of the studied location, water depth, years of farm activity, and total annual production, must be
included when interpreting the response of benthic communities to organic enrichment from aquaculture
Toward sustainable environmental quality : priority research questions for Europe
The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals have been established to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals will require a healthy and productive environment. An understanding of the impacts of chemicals which can negatively impact environmental health is therefore essential to the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, current research on and regulation of chemicals in the environment tend to take a simplistic view and do not account for the complexity of the real world, which inhibits the way we manage chemicals. There is therefore an urgent need for a step change in the way we study and communicate the impacts and control of chemicals in the natural environment. To do this requires the major research questions to be identified so that resources are focused on questions that really matter. We present the findings of a horizon-scanning exercise to identify research priorities of the European environmental science community around chemicals in the environment. Using the key questions approach, we identified 22 questions of priority. These questions covered overarching questions about which chemicals we should be most concerned about and where, impacts of global megatrends, protection goals, and sustainability of chemicals; the development and parameterization of assessment and management frameworks; and mechanisms to maximize the impact of the research. The research questions identified provide a first-step in the path forward for the research, regulatory, and business communities to better assess and manage chemicals in the natural environment. Deficiências minerais em plantas de bertalha ( Basella alba, L.)
Basella alba is used as a major food on the Amazon region, north Brazil for its high mineral and vitamins content. The purpose of the present work was: a) obtain a clear picture of the macronutrient deficiency; b) growth of the plants in function of (1); c) analyptical levels found in the leaves. Young Basella alba plants (bertalha in Portuguese) were cultivated in pots containing fine pure quartz and irrigated by percolation with different nutrient solutions lacking one of the element at the time. Clear cut symptoms were obtained for all macronutrients. Only the omission of nitrogen and potassium affect the dry matter production of plants. The range in dry matter for unhealthy and healthy leaves were: N% = 1.25--3-55; P% = 0.17-0.36; K% = 0.46-3.55; Ca% = 0,62-1.78; Mg% = 0.37-0.80; S% = 0.19-0.13.Plantas de bertalha (Basella alba, L.) INPA-1 foram cultivadas em casa de vegetação em quartzo moído, irrigadas com soluções nutritivas conforme SARRUGE (1975) e submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: completo, omissão de N, omissão de P, omissão de K, omissão de Ca, omissão de Mg e omissão de S, com o objetivo de: (a) obter sintomas de deficiência dos ma cronutrientes; (b) analisar o crescimento das plantas através da produção de matéria seca; (c) determinar a concentração dos macronutrientes nas folhas e caules das plantas cultivadas nos diversos tratamentos. Os sintomas visuais de deficiência foram identificados e descritos. As plantas foram coletadas e separadas em raiz, caule, folhas e determinaram-se os teores dos macronutrientes minerais neste material. Os resultados obtidos mostram: - os sintomas visuais de deficiência são bem definidos e de fácil caracterização para todos os nutrientes; - só foi possível detectar efeito na produção de matéria seca das folhas e caules para omissão de nitrogênio e para omissão de potássio nos caules; - os níveis de deficiência e adequação obtidos nas folhas foram respectivamente: N% = 1,25 e 2,63; P% = 0,17 e 0,36; K% = 0,46 e 3,55; Ca% = 0,62e 1,78; Mg% = 0,37 e 0,80; s%= 0,19 e 0,23. - os níveis de deficiência e adequação obtidos nos caules foram respectivamente: N% = 0,67 e 0,98; P% = 0,13 e 0,31; K% = 0,73 e 2,67; Ca% = 0,11 e 0,64; Mg% = 0,08 e 0,20; S% = 0,15 e 0,20
Emission of carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbons and particulate matter during wood combustion in a stove operating under distinct conditions
Wood combustion experiments were carried out to determine the effect of ignition technique, biomass load and
cleavage, as well as secondary air supply, on carbon monoxide (CO), total hydrocarbon (THC), particulate matter
(PM10) and particle number emissions fromawoodstove.Wood fromtwo typical tree species in the Iberian Peninsula
was selected: pine (Pinus pinaster) and beech (Fagus sylvatica). The highest CO and total hydrocarbon
emission factors (EFs) were observed, respectively, for pine and beech, for high and low fuel loads. The highest
PM10 EFwas recorded for the operationwith lowloads for bothwoods. Secondary air supply produced the lowest
PM10 emission factors. The top ignition can decrease the PM10 EF to less than halfwhen compared with the common
technique of lighting from the bottom. The lowest particle number emission factors were observed when
operating with high loads of split beech logs and when using secondary air supply during the combustion of
pine. Regarding particle number distributions, the highest geometric mean diameter (Dg), for both woods,
were observed when operating with high loads (with split and non-split wood)
