    An in-situ assessment of Dorsal Cranial Myopathy in broilers, approaching regarding meteorological influences in South Brazil, classification, and appearance of the lesions during industrial processing

    Broiler meat is a high-quality food for humans, and is worldwide consumed. Brazil plays an important role in the poultry industry and in its South region is situated the most important pro- ducer. Recently, alterations on the meat aspect have aroused the interest of researchers to clarify their causes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between environ- mental conditions and seasons on the prevalence of Dorsal Cranial Myopathy (DCM) and also, to generate a DCM classification in scores, for griller-type broilers. Carcasses were picked out from several stages of industrial processing from a slaughterhouse located in South Brazil. The preva- lence of DCM was measured using the database of partial condemnations of the Official Inspection Service during 19 months. Meteorological data were obtained from the National Institute of Meteo- rology (in Portuguese Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia- INMET), of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. In addition, microorganisms with public health importance were measured on samples taken from the muscles with DCM. The prevalence of DCM was compared among sea- sons using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The relation with other environmental conditions was accessed using a principal component analysis. Partial condemnations by DCM were higher (P 0.05). Visually, it could be noted that the hemorrhagic lesion of the Anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) muscle diminished during the processing line, making the DCM imperceptible, even in those carcasses with severe DCM score at the beginning of the process. In conclusion, the climate features approached here could be correlated to this emerging myopathy. However, this lesion does not represent a food security issue for the consumers regarding evaluated microorganisms, as this kind of lesion tends to disappear in the final sellable product

    El proyecto APROVECHAMIENTO DE RECURSOS HÍDRICOS RENOVABLES PARA EL TRATAMIENTO, DISTRIBUCIÓN Y COMERCIALIZACIÓN DE AGUA EN EL MUNICIPIO DE QUIPILE tiene como objetivo identificar la posibilidad de mejorar la calidad de vida de los habitantes del municipio de Quipile, especialmente los de la zona rural del mismo, ya que es en dicha zona donde se pudo evidenciar la mayor escasez de agua potable, esto se comprobó realizando una investigación exploratoria donde se tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a profundidad la opinión de los habitantes, para poder satisfacer las necesidades de los consumidores y los requerimientos de los mismos y es acá donde se toma la decisión de diseñar una planta de tratamiento de agua, aprovechando el recurso hídrico ubicado en la finca La Cristalina. Por esta razón se realiza un estudio de factibilidad en donde se muestren las características que se deben cumplir en cuanto recurso técnico y económico para alcanzar este objetivo

    Comparison between linear and nonlinear systems of feed formulation for broilers

    Two experiments were simultaneously carried out to compare feed formulation models: a linear model for minimum cost with a nonlinear model for maximum profitability for one-to 42-d-old broilers. One-dold male or female Cobb 500 broilers (n=2368) were allocated to one of the two trials according to sex. The experiments were performed simultaneously in an experimental poultry farm. Two housing densities were used: high density (HDH), with 14 birds/m2, and low density (LDH), with 10 birds/m2. The following treatments were evaluated: linear feed formulation and LDH (LF10); nonlinear formulation and LDH (NF10); linear formulation and HDH (LF14); and nonlinear formulation and HDH (NF14). A completely randomized design with four treatments of eight replicates each was applied. Performance and cost per kg of poultry were evaluated. Both formulation systems promoted similar broiler performance. However, the high-density feed using linear formulation reduced body weight in 42-d-old males, but not when nonlinear formulation was used. The NF10 treatment yielded the worst feed conversion ratio (p<0.05) and the lowest cost/kg broiler (p<0.05) for both sexes. The results demonstrate that the nutritional program that yields the best performance is not always the most economical one

    Avaliação da presença de sintomas depressivos em pacientes com hanseníase em um centro de referência na Amazônia

    INTRODUÇÃO: A hanseníase é uma doença infectocontagiosa, de caráter crônico e incapacitante. Os principais sinais e sintomas incluem manchas hipocrômicas, acastanhadas ou avermelhadas com alteração de sensibilidade, além de parestesias em membros e pele infiltrada.&nbsp; Ela também pode gerar incapacidades e algum grau de limitação da vida social o que impacta negativamente a qualidade de vida dos pacientes que a possuem, afetando sua autoestima e, por consequência, sua saúde mental. OBJETIVO: analisar a frequência de sintomas depressivos em pacientes acometidos por Hanseníase atendidos em um centro de referência. MÉTODO: estudo descritivo, observacional e unicêntrico com 30 pacientes diagnosticados com hanseníase, atendidos no Ambulatório de Dermatologia da Universidade do Estado do Pará, em 2022, a fim de avaliar sintomas depressivos através da escala de depressão de Beck e correlaciona-los com dados clínicos. LIMITAÇÕES DO ESTUDO: preenchimento incompleto dos formulários utilizados para a coleta dos dados.&nbsp; CONCLUSÃO: conclui-se que os pacientes tinham distribuição igual entre os sexos, estavam predominantemente na faixa etária acima de 50 anos e apresentavam forma clínica dimorfa. 16,67% apresentaram sintomas depressivos moderados a graves

    Telehealth effectiveness for pre-exposure prophylaxis delivery in Brazilian public services : the Combine! Study

    Introduction Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) delivery based on user needs can enhance PrEP access and impact. We examined whether telehealth for daily oral PrEP delivery could change the indicators of care related to prophylactic use in five Brazilian public HIV clinics (testing centres, outpatient clinics and infectious disease hospitals). Methods Between July 2019 and December 2020, clients on PrEP for at least 6 months could transition to telehealth or stay with in-person follow-up. Clients were clinically monitored until June 2021. A desktop or mobile application was developed, comprising three asynchronous consultations and one annual in-person consultation visit. Predictors influencing telehealth preference and care outcomes were examined. The analysis encompassed intent-to-treat (first choice) and adjustments for sexual practices, schooling, age, duration of PrEP use and PrEP status during the choice period. Results Of 470 users, 52% chose telehealth, with the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) increasing over time for PrEP use (aOR for 25–months of use: 4.90; 95% CI: 1.32–18.25), having discontinued PrEP at the time of the choice (aOR: 2.91; 95% CI: 1.40–6.06) and having health insurance (aOR: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.24–2.94) and decreasing for those who reported higher-risk behaviour (aOR for unprotected anal sex: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.29–0.88). After an average follow-up period of 1.6 years (95% CI: 1.5–1.7), the risk of discontinuing PrEP (not having the medication for more than 90 days) was 34% lower with telehealth (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.66; 95% CI: 0.45–0.97). When adjusted by mixed linear regression, no differences in adherence (measured by mean medication possession rate) were found between in-person and telehealth (p = 0.486) or at pre- and post-telehealth follow-ups (p = 0.245). Sexually transmitted infections increased between the pre-follow-up and post-follow-up choices and were not associated with in-person or telehealth (p = 0.528). No HIV infections were observed. Conclusions Our findings indicate that telehealth for PrEP delivery can enhance service rationalization and reinforce the prevention cascade. This approach reduces prophylaxis interruptions and is mainly preferred by individuals with lower demands for healthcare services

    Efeito da acupuntura na variabilidade da frequência cardíaca em indivíduos com esclerose múltipla: um protocolo para ensaio randomizado controlado duplo cego

    Backgroung: the growing of patients with multiple sclerosis seeking acupuncture treatment is based on clinical reports of improvements in symptoms. Considering that autonomic impairment, including cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction, is not uncommon in patients with MS, neuromodulation with acupuncture could be an interesting tool to change heart rate variability in this population. Objective: to evaluate heart rate variability in patients with multiple sclerosis, during the application of acupuncture, in order to analyze the behavior of the autonomic nervous system before, during and after therapy and changes in condition after a longitudinal intervention. Methods: a double-blinded randomized sham-controlled crossover trial with a 1:1 allocation ratio will be conducted, with 40 individuals without a previous illness, who will constitute the control group, and 40 individuals with Multiple Sclerosis, who will constitute the experimental group, paired by age and sex. All participants will undertake active or sham acupuncture sessions. Discussion: according to the studies found, cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction is expected, with alterations in heart rate variability. Although neuromodulation with acupuncture can control pain and inflammation, there are still difficulties in affirming whether the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems can be changed by acupuncture. Trial registration: We registered this trial on ClinicalTrials.gov, ID: NCT05523466Introdução: o crescimento de pacientes com esclerose múltipla que procuram tratamento com acupuntura é baseado em relatos clínicos de melhora dos sintomas. Considerando que o comprometimento autonômico, incluindo a disfunção autonômica cardiovascular, não é incomum em pacientes com EM a neuromodulação com acupuntura pode ser uma ferramenta interessante para alterar a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca nessa população. Objetivo: avaliar a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca em pacientes com esclerose múltipla, durante a aplicação da Acupuntura, a fim de analisar o comportamento do sistema nervoso autônomo antes, durante e após a terapia e as mudanças na condição após uma intervenção longitudinal. Métodos: será realizado um ensaio clínico cruzado, randomizado, placebo-controlado, duplo-cego, com proporção de alocação de 1:1, com 40 indivíduos sem doença prévia, que constituirão o grupo controle, e 40 indivíduos com Esclerose Múltipla, que constituirão o grupo experimental. grupo, pareado por idade e sexo. Todos os participantes realizarão sessões de acupuntura ativas ou simuladas. Discussão: de acordo com os estudos encontrados, é esperada disfunção autonômica cardiovascular, com alterações na variabilidade da frequência cardíaca. Embora a neuromodulação com acupuntura possa controlar a dor e a inflamação, ainda há dificuldades em afirmar se o equilíbrio entre os sistemas simpático e parassimpático pode ser alterado pela acupuntura.     Circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) correlate with disease status in leprosy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Caused by <it>Mycobacterium leprae </it>(ML), leprosy presents a strong immune-inflammatory component, whose status dictates both the clinical form of the disease and the occurrence of reactional episodes. Evidence has shown that, during the immune-inflammatory response to infection, the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF-I) plays a prominent regulatory role. However, in leprosy, little, if anything, is known about the interaction between the immune and neuroendocrine systems.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present retrospective study, we measured the serum levels of IGF-I and IGBP-3, its major binding protein. These measurements were taken at diagnosis in nonreactional borderline tuberculoid (NR BT), borderline lepromatous (NR BL), and lepromatous (NR LL) leprosy patients in addition to healthy controls (HC). LL and BL patients who developed reaction during the course of the disease were also included in the study. The serum levels of IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were evaluated at diagnosis and during development of reversal (RR) or erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) reaction by the solid phase, enzyme-labeled, chemiluminescent-immunometric method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The circulating IGF-I/IGFBP-3 levels showed significant differences according to disease status and occurrence of reactional episodes. At the time of leprosy diagnosis, significantly lower levels of circulating IGF-I/IGFBP-3 were found in NR BL and NR LL patients in contrast to NR BT patients and HCs. However, after treatment, serum IGF-I levels in BL/LL patients returned to normal. Notably, the levels of circulating IGF-I at diagnosis were low in 75% of patients who did not undergo ENL during treatment (NR LL patients) in opposition to the normal levels observed in those who suffered ENL during treatment (R LL patients). Nonetheless, during ENL episodes, the levels observed in RLL sera tended to decrease, attaining similar levels to those found in NR LL patients. Interestingly, IGF-I behaved contrary to what was observed during RR episodes in R BL patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data revealed important alterations in the IGF system in relation to the status of the host immune-inflammatory response to ML while at the same time pointing to the circulating IGF-I/IGFBP-3 levels as possible predictive biomarkers for ENL in LL patients at diagnosis.</p

    Towards precision medicine: defining and characterizing adipose tissue dysfunction to identify early immunometabolic risk in symptom-free adults from the GEMM family study

    Interactions between macrophages and adipocytes are early molecular factors influencing adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction, resulting in high leptin, low adiponectin circulating levels and low-grade metaflammation, leading to insulin resistance (IR) with increased cardiovascular risk. We report the characterization of AT dysfunction through measurements of the adiponectin/leptin ratio (ALR), the adipo-insulin resistance index (Adipo-IRi), fasting/postprandial (F/P) immunometabolic phenotyping and direct F/P differential gene expression in AT biopsies obtained from symptom-free adults from the GEMM family study. AT dysfunction was evaluated through associations of the ALR with F/P insulin-glucose axis, lipid-lipoprotein metabolism, and inflammatory markers. A relevant pattern of negative associations between decreased ALR and markers of systemic low-grade metaflammation, HOMA, and postprandial cardiovascular risk hyperinsulinemic, triglyceride and GLP-1 curves was found. We also analysed their plasma non-coding microRNAs and shotgun lipidomics profiles finding trends that may reflect a pattern of adipose tissue dysfunction in the fed and fasted state. Direct gene differential expression data showed initial patterns of AT molecular signatures of key immunometabolic genes involved in AT expansion, angiogenic remodelling and immune cell migration. These data reinforce the central, early role of AT dysfunction at the molecular and systemic level in the pathogenesis of IR and immunometabolic disorders

    Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on liver cancer management (CERO-19).

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems and it may have heavily impacted patients with liver cancer (LC). Herein, we evaluated whether the schedule of LC screening or procedures has been interrupted or delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An international survey evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on clinical practice and clinical trials from March 2020 to June 2020, as the first phase of a multicentre, international, and observational project. The focus was on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma or intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, cared for around the world during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. RESULTS: Ninety-one centres expressed interest to participate and 76 were included in the analysis, from Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Africa (73.7%, 17.1%, 5.3%, 2.6%, and 1.3% per continent, respectively). Eighty-seven percent of the centres modified their clinical practice: 40.8% the diagnostic procedures, 80.9% the screening programme, 50% cancelled curative and/or palliative treatments for LC, and 41.7% modified the liver transplantation programme. Forty-five out of 69 (65.2%) centres in which clinical trials were running modified their treatments in that setting, but 58.1% were able to recruit new patients. The phone call service was modified in 51.4% of centres which had this service before the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 19/37). CONCLUSIONS: The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on the routine care of patients with liver cancer. Modifications in screening, diagnostic, and treatment algorithms may have significantly impaired the outcome of patients. Ongoing data collection and future analyses will report the benefits and disadvantages of the strategies implemented, aiding future decision-making.     Estudio de ecosistemas terrestres y acuáticos ubicados en el parque nacional natural cueva de los guácharos (acevedo, huila)

    Los estudios realizados durante el tiempo en el que se realizó la salida de campo de la asignatura Ecología Regional Continental del 3 al 17 de septiembre de 2010 permitieron determinar ciertas características y estados de calidad en los sistemas acuáticos y vegetales (bosque subandino) del Parque Nacional Natural Cueva de los Güácharos(PNNCG). Para el estudio limnológico se realizaron muestreos en varios ecosistemas acuáticos: Laguna Encantada, Quebrada Chánchiras, Quebrada La Lindosa, Cascada Cristales, Rí­o Suaza, Cueva de los Guacharos y Cueva del Indio. Se tomaron muestras a de variales fisicoquímicas y de comunidades biológicas (perifiton, plancton, macroinvertebrados). Las aguas de la región son de temperaturas medias y se mineralizan al pasar por el sistema de cuevas; son ligeramente alcalinas y bajas en nutrientes (oligotróficas) y transportan bajas a moderadas cantidades de sólidos suspendidos. Los datos fisicoquímicos que caracterizan a los ecosistemas acuáticos del PNNCG corresponden a sistemas típicos neotropicales, con baja intervención humana y condiciones propias de ambientes cársticos. La materia orgánica aportada por la vegetación riparia y por las macrófitas sustenta diferentes órdenes de macroinvertebrados, siendo los más representativos Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Hemíptera y Trichoptera. El bosque subandino estudiado se encuentra en proceso de desarrollo debido a que presenta una mayor cantidad de arboles del conjunto del futuro; no obstante, el conjunto del presente, aunque en una menor proporción, se encuentra bien establecido. Esto también se puede observar en los mapas de cobertura vegetal del estrato arbóreo, donde el dosel es continuo y solamente se interrumpe por los disturbios ocasionados por la muerte y caída de árboles del conjunto del presente, lo que genera claros en el bosque y permite que los arboles del conjunto del futuro desarrollen su cobertura
