[Abstract] The extraction of meaningful features from the monitoring of laser processes is the foundation of new non-destructive quality inspection methods for the manufactured pieces, which has been and remains a growing interest in industry. We present ConvLBM, a novel approach to monitor Laser Based Manufacturing processes in real-time. ConvLBM uses a Convolutional Neural Network model to extract features and quality indicators from raw Medium Wavelength Infrared coaxial images. We demonstrate the ability of ConvLBM to represent process dynamics, and predict quality indicators in two scenarios: dilution estimation in Laser Metal Deposition, and location of defects in laser welding processes. Obtained results represent a breakthrough in the 3D printing of large metal parts, and in the quality control of welding processes. We are also releasing the first large dataset of annotated images of laser manufacturing

High levels of perfectionism in college students can compromise their academic performance and psychological well-being. This study aims to analyze the implication of perfectionism in psychological well-being and suicidal ideation in the last year. A total of 1.287 students from different degrees reported their academic performance in the previous academic year and completed questionnaires on academic perfectionism, psychological well-being, and suicidal thoughts in the last year. In both men and women, academic perfectionism correlates positively with academic performance and negatively with the different dimensions of psychological well-being. Likewise, both the average grade in the previous year (β = 0.364) and the level of demand of the degree (β = −0.461) are mediating variables between perfectionism and psychological well-being. Furthermore, the interaction between perfectionism and academic performance is related positively to psychological well-being, but not to with suicidal ideation. So, the relation between suicidal ideation and perfectionism is positive (OR = 1.075), but this is negative with academic performance (OR = 0.900), although both variables show a mild predictive capacity. These findings suggest that the levels of perfectionism are associated differently with the mental health of students, since if perfectionism is effective (high academic performance), psychological well-being is high, although in our results, this interaction is not as important for suicidal thoughts

Early intervention with ABA prevents neuroinflammation and memory impairment in a triple transgenic mice model of Alzheimer´s disease

Neuroinflammation and insulin resistance in the brain are intimately linked to neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. Even though traditionally Alzheimer´s disease has been associated to Aβ deposits and hyperphosphorylated Tau intracellular tangles, several studies show that neuroinflammation may be the initial cause that triggers degeneration. Accordingly, a number of natural supplements that improves brain insulin sensitivity and reduce neuroinflammation have been proposed as good choices in the therapeutic prevention of cognitive decline. Further supporting this evidence, we show that phytohormone Abscisic Acid, can prevent memory impairment and neuroinflammation markers in a triple transgenic mouse model, where no peripheral inflammatory changes have occurred. Moreover, our data strongly suggests that early intervention is critical for good prognosis, and that cognitive improvement requires longer treatment than recovering neuroinflammation markers

The importance of cognitive and emotional variables in learning is undeniable. The present work seeks to analyze the relationship between the empathy and creativity variables in a sample of 65 Colombian students (12.72 ± 1.57 years old, distributed between 10 and 16 years old) according to age and gender. We used a descriptive and correlational design, as well as a quasi-experimental design based on the objectives of the analysis. The results show that there is a statistically significant and negative correlation between age and the cognitive dimension of empathy, just like this with creativity. In addition, there is a significant and positive correlation between age and creativity and age and affective empathy. On the other hand, analyzes of correlations isolating groups according to gender reflect more affective empathy in the female than in the male gender. Considering the correlations separating the age ranges, it was observed that in the older students (14-16 years) there is a statistically significant and positive correlation between creativity and cognitive empathy. Regarding comparisons between groups of independent samples, we found that cognitive empathy is higher in the 10 to 13 age group, and that overall empathy is greater in the female gender. The results found in this study are discussed and the Educational implications.</p

Determination of human metabolites of chlorinated phosphorous flame retardants in wastewater by N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide-derivatization and gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry

The analysis of wastewater for the determination of human biomarkers of exposure (human metabolites) is a non-intrusive, economic and complementary alternative to the analysis of urine in the monitoring of human exposure to chemicals of concern. This study provides the first gas chromatography-based method for the determination of three metabolites of chlorinated organophosphorous flame retardants (OPFRs: bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, bis(chloropropyl) phosphate and bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate) in wastewater. A solid-phase extraction procedure based on the use of mixed-mode reversed-phase weak anion exchange sorbents was optimized including a fractionated elution of OPFRs and their metabolites. Analytes derivatization was investigated by comparing two silylating reagents, N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide and N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide, the first one providing better results. Determination was performed by gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry with a quadrupole-time-of-flight system (GC-QTOF) in order to improve selectivity. Furthermore, the use of GC-QTOF combined with the specific ion obtained from silylated metabolites (m/z 154.9924) can be exploited to screen for other phosphate ester metabolites. Under final conditions, the overall method performance was satisfactory, affording method detection limits ranging from 1.1 to 4.6 ng/L, percentages of recovery from 90% to 110%, and relative standard deviations below 13%. The analysis of composite raw wastewater samples collected over 24 h in the NW of Spain allowed to quantify, for the first time in this matrix, the metabolite bis(chloropropyl) phosphate at levels over 60 ng/LThis work was financially supported by the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (project no.
