Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887) is a valued Brazilian fish species for aquaculture. This is highly susceptible to disease, and feed supplementations for pacu can be a very important strategy to prevent disease incidence in fish farms. The aim of this study was to evaluate a strategic supplementation for pacu. Juvenile pacu (10.5 ± 1.2 g) were fed diets containing three levels of vitamins C and/or E (0, 250, and 500 mg vitamin kg-1 diet). Fish were fed diets without supplementation for two months prior to the experiment. After that period, experimental feeding was initiated for two months. Growth and hematological evaluations were made on the thirtieth and sixtieth days of feeding. Pacu fed diet without supplementation of vitamins C and E during 120 days did not show clear typical signs of deficiency. Fish fed diet vitamins C and E free increased feed intake, but no improvement on growth performance was detected. Vitamin E proved essential for erythrocyte protection, so that the higher the level of this vitamin in diet, the smaller the number of erythroblasts. Supplementation with 500 mg of vitamin C and 250 mg of vitamin E for 60 days increased the production of monocytes, thrombocytes and special granulocytic cells in pacu

Eventos de turismo desportivo: uma atividade sustentável? O caso dos 21 Kms do Guarajá

    Get PDF

Infrared thermal image for assessing animal health and welfare

    Get PDF
Infrared thermal imaging is a non-destructive testing technology that can be used to determine the superficial temperature of objects. This technology has an increasing use in detecting diseases and distress in animal husbandry within the poultry, pig and dairy production. The process can identify changes in peripheral blood flow from the resulting changes in heat loss and; therefore, have been a useful tool for evaluating the presence of disease, edema, and stress in animals. This paper reviews the current literature related to the use of infrared technology and discusses their results and implications in animal welfare issues, poultry, pig and bovine industry

The indument of Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. aborigineus (Burkart) Baudet, a native bean from Argentina, potential source for improvement of cultivated varieties, was compared between different genetic lines. Seeds collected from wild, weedy forms and presumptive hybrid individuals in two distant latitudes were sown in two sites of Buenos Aires University Campus (field and greenhouse). Two type of trichomes were found, which differenciate in length and shape. The pubescence density was significantly different between wild specimens from different latitudes and between culture sites for plants of a same procedence. This character could be involved in physical defences of these plants.Fil: Ojeda, Fabiana Soledad. Consejo Nacional de Invest.cientif.y Tecnicas. To study the ontogeny of the extrafloral nectaries present in the inflorescences of Vigna luteola (Jacq.) Benth (Leguminosae, Phaseolinae), the location, morphology, anatomy of the earliest stages, histology of the definitive structures and ultrastructure of the secretory stage were analyzed. The extrafloral nectaries at different developmental stages were examined with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The secretory stage was also examined with transmission electron microscopy. The racemose inflorescence of V. luteola has six nodes. At each node, a short globose secondary axis bears two flowers and one to three extrafloral nectaries. Each extrafloral nectary originates from the abscission of a flower bud and is formed by two differentiated zones: a ring of epidermal cells surrounding a group of longitudinally enlarged papillose central cells, both with underlying secretory parenchyma. The primary secretory tissue consists of the central cells, while the ring contributes to secretion to a lesser degree. Secretion is granulocrine, by means of exocytotic vesicles and plasmalemma invaginations. Four developmental stages succeed; the third one being the secretory. The extrafloral nectaries activity period starts when the flowers of the same secondary axis open and ceases before fruit development.Fil: Ojeda, Fabiana Soledad. Fair and Scalable Orchestration of Network and Compute Resources for Virtual Edge Services

    Get PDF
The combination of service virtualization and edge computing allows for low latency services, while keeping data storage and processing local. However, given the limited resources available at the edge, a conflict in resource usage arises when both virtualized user applications and network functions need to be supported. Further, the concurrent resource request by user applications and network functions is often entangled, since the data generated by the former has to be transferred by the latter, and vice versa. In this paper, we first show through experimental tests the correlation between a video-based application and a vRAN. Then, owing to the complex involved dynamics, we develop a scalable reinforcement learning framework for resource orchestration at the edge, which leverages a Pareto analysis for provable fair and efficient decisions. We validate our framework, named VERA, through a real-time proof-of-concept implementation, which we also use to obtain datasets reporting real-world operational conditions and performance. Using such experimental datasets, we demonstrate that VERA meets the KPI targets for over 96% of the observation period and performs similarly when executed in our real-time implementation, with KPI differences below 12.4%. Further, its scaling cost is 54% lower than a centralized framework based on deep-Q networks

VERA: Resource Orchestration for Virtualized Services at the Edge

The combination of service virtualization and edge computing allows mobile users to enjoy low latency services, while keeping data storage and processing local. However, the network edge has limited resource availability, and when both virtualized user applications and network functions need to be supported concurrently, a natural conflict in resource usage arises. In this paper, we focus on computing and radio resources and develop a framework for resource orchestration at the edge that leverages a model-free reinforcement learning approach and a Pareto analysis, which is proved to make fair and efficient decisions. Through our testbed, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution in resource-limited scenarios where standard multi-agent solutions violate the system’s capacity constraints systematically, e.g., over 70% violation rate with 2 vCPUs in our testbed.
