Amorphous magnesium silicate ultrasound-assisted precipitation in a mixing system: Population balance modelling and crystallization rates identification
International audienceNatural talc is a very interesting filler for plastic and rubber materials and paints because it enables polymer matrix properties to be improved. Nano-sized particles are required to get a good dispersion of the solid in the polymer matrix. However, at the moment the main drawback in the use of natural talc is that, with a conventional milling process, nanometric particle sizes are difficult and expensive to obtain. A process of magnesium silicate synthesis made by ultrasound-assisted precipitation has been developed in two steps. The first step consists of the synthesis of amorphous magnesium silicate by precipitation from sodium metasilicate and acid magnesium chloride. In the second step, the amorphous solid is transformed in a crystalline solid under pressure. In this study an ultrasound-assisted synthesis of amorphous magnesium silicate is proposed. Some process parameters (ultrasound power, initial reactants molalities and reactants flow rate) have effects on the particle-size distribution. The population balance is modelled and solved by moments method in the steady state to identify nucleation and growth rates and agglomeration kernel as a function of operating conditions and to understand how these conditions affect the particle-size distribution
Survival of branching random walks in random environment
We study survival of nearest-neighbour branching random walks in random
environment (BRWRE) on . A priori there are three different
regimes of survival: global survival, local survival, and strong local
survival. We show that local and strong local survival regimes coincide for
BRWRE and that they can be characterized with the spectral radius of the first
moment matrix of the process. These results are generalizations of the
classification of BRWRE in recurrent and transient regimes. Our main result is
a characterization of global survival that is given in terms of Lyapunov

Multilevel and multiscale drought reanalysis over France with the Safran-Isba-Modcou hydrometeorological suite
Physically-based droughts can be defined as a water deficit in at least one component of the land surface hydrological cycle. The reliance of different activity domains (water supply, irrigation, hydropower, etc.) on specific components of this cycle requires drought monitoring to be based on indices related to meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological droughts. This paper describes a high-resolution retrospective analysis of such droughts in France over the last fifty years, based on the Safran-Isba-Modcou (SIM) hydrometeorological suite. The high-resolution 1958â2008 Safran atmospheric reanalysis was used to force the Isba land surface scheme and the hydrogeological model Modcou. Meteorological droughts are characterized with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at time scales varying from 1 to 24 months. Similar standardizing methods were applied to soil moisture and streamflow for identifying multiscale agricultural droughts â through the Standardized Soil Wetness Index (SSWI) â and multiscale hydrological droughts, through the Standardized Flow Index (SFI). Based on a common threshold level for all indices, drought event statistics over the 50-yr period â number of events, duration, severity and magnitude â have been derived locally in order to highlight regional differences at multiple time scales and at multiple levels of the hydrological cycle (precipitation, soil moisture, streamflow). Results show a substantial variety of temporal drought patterns over the country that are highly dependent on both the variable and time scale considered. Independent spatio-temporal drought events have then been identified and described by combining local characteristics with the evolution of area under drought. Summary statistics have finally been used to compare past severe drought events, from multi-year precipitation deficits (1989â1990) to short hot and dry periods (2003). Results show that the ranking of drought events depends highly on both the time scale and the variable considered. This multilevel and multiscale drought climatology will serve as a basis for assessing the impacts of climate change on droughts in France
Cost-effectiveness analysis of ceftazidime/avibactam compared to imipenem as empirical treatment for complicated urinary tract infections
Ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ-AVI) is a novel, fixed-dose combination antibiotic that has been approved in Europe and the United States for patients with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) based on results of a Phase III, randomized, comparative study (RECAPTURE study). The present analysis evaluated cost-effectiveness of CAZ-AVI as an empirical treatment for hospitalized patients with cUTIs from the Italian publicly funded healthcare (third-party payer) perspective. A sequential, patient-level simulation model was developed that followed the clinical course of cUTI and generated 5000 pairs of identical patients (CAZ-AVI or imipenem as empirical treatment). The model included additional impact of resistant pathogens; patients who did not respond to empirical treatment were switched to second-line treatment of colistin+high dose carbapenem in both groups. The time horizon of the model was five years, with an annual discount rate of 3% applied to both costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). The analysis demonstrated that an intervention sequence (CAZ-AVI followed by colistin+high dose carbapenem) compared with a comparator sequence (imipenem followed by colistin+high dose carbapenem) was associated with a net incremental cost of âŹ1015 per patient but provided better health outcomes in terms of clinical cure (97.65% vs. 91.08%; â = 6.57%), shorter hospital stays (10.65 vs. 12.55 days; â = 1.90 days), and QALYs gained per patient (4.190 vs. 4.063; â = 0.126). The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was âŹ8039/QALY, which is well below the willingness-to-pay threshold of âŹ30 000/QALY in Italy. The results showed that CAZ-AVI is expected to be a cost-effective treatment compared with imipenem for cUTI in Italy
Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 1ES 1426+428 at 100 GeV with the CELESTE Cherenkov Telescope
We have measured the gamma-ray fluxes of the blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in
the energy range between 50 and 350 GeV (1.2 to 8.3 x 10^25 Hz). The detector,
called CELESTE, used first 40, then 53 heliostats of the former solar facility
"Themis" in the French Pyrenees to collect Cherenkov light generated in
atmospheric particle cascades. The signal from Mrk 421 is often strong. We
compare its flux with previously published multi-wavelength studies and infer
that we are straddling the high energy peak of the spectral energy
distribution. The signal from Mrk 501 in 2000 was weak (3.4 sigma). We obtain
an upper limit on the flux from 1ES 1426+428 of less than half that of the Crab
flux near 100 GeV. The data analysis and understanding of systematic biases

The Wendelstein Calar Alto Pixellensing Project(WeCAPP): First MACHO Candidates
We report the detection of the first 2 microlensing candidates from the
Wendelstein Calar Alto Pixellensing Project (WeCAPP). Both are detected with a
high signal-to-noise-ratio and were filtered out from 4.5 mill. pixel light
curves using a variety of selection criteria. Here we only consider
well-sampled events with timescales of 1 d < t_fwhm < 20 d, high amplitude, and
low chi^2 of the microlensing fit. The two-color photometry (R,I) shows that
the events are achromatic and that giant stars with colors of (R-I) ~ 1.1 mag
in the bulge of M31 have been lensed. The magnification factors are 64 and 10
which are obtained for typical giant luminosities of M_I = -2.5 mag. Both
lensing events lasted for only a few days (t_fwhm^GL1 = 1.7 d and t_fwhm^GL2 =
5.4 d). The event GL1 is likely identical with PA-00-S3 reported by the
POINT-AGAPE project. Our calculations favor in both cases the possibility that
MACHOs in the halo of M31 caused the lensing events. The most probable masses,
0.08 M_sun for GL1 and 0.02 M_sun for GL2, are in the range of the brown dwarf

\pi\pi, K\pi and \pi N potential scattering and a prediction of a narrow \sigma meson resonance
Low energy scattering and bound state properties of the \pi N, \pi\pi and
K\pi systems are studied as coupled channel problems using inversion potentials
of phase shift data. In a first step we apply the potential model to explain
recent measurements of pionic hydrogen shift and width. Secondly, predictions
of the model for pionium lifetime and shift confirm a well known and widely
used effective range expression. Thirdly, as extension of this confirmation, we
predict an unexpected medium effect of the pionium lifetime which shortens by
several orders of magnitude. The \sigma meson shows a narrow resonance
structure as a function of the medium modified mass with the implication of
being essentially energy independent. Similarly, we see this medium resonance
effect realized for the K\pi system. To support our findings we present also

The CAT Imaging Telescope for Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy
The CAT (Cherenkov Array at Themis) imaging telescope, equipped with a
very-high-definition camera (546 fast phototubes with 0.12 degrees spacing
surrounded by 54 larger tubes in two guard rings) started operation in Autumn
1996 on the site of the former solar plant Themis (France). Using the
atmospheric Cherenkov technique, it detects and identifies very high energy
gamma-rays in the range 250 GeV to a few tens of TeV. The instrument, which has
detected three sources (Crab nebula, Mrk 421 and Mrk 501), is described in

Classical novae from the POINT-AGAPE microlensing survey of M31 -- I. The nova catalogue
The POINT-AGAPE survey is an optical search for gravitational microlensing
events towards the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). As well as microlensing, the survey
is sensitive to many different classes of variable stars and transients. Here
we describe the automated detection and selection pipeline used to identify M31
classical novae (CNe) and we present the resulting catalogue of 20 CN
candidates observed over three seasons. CNe are observed both in the bulge
region as well as over a wide area of the M31 disk. Nine of the CNe are caught
during the final rise phase and all are well sampled in at least two colours.
The excellent light-curve coverage has allowed us to detect and classify CNe
over a wide range of speed class, from very fast to very slow. Among the
light-curves is a moderately fast CN exhibiting entry into a deep transition
minimum, followed by its final decline. We have also observed in detail a very
slow CN which faded by only 0.01 mag day over a 150 day period. We
detect other interesting variable objects, including one of the longest period
and most luminous Mira variables. The CN catalogue constitutes a uniquely
well-sampled and objectively-selected data set with which to study the
statistical properties of classical novae in M31, such as the global nova rate,
the reliability of novae as standard-candle distance indicators and the
dependence of the nova population on stellar environment. The findings of this
