CPT/Lorentz Invariance Violation and Neutrino Oscillation

    Get PDF
We analyze the consequences of violation of Lorentz and CPTCPT invariance in the massless neutrino sector by deforming the canonical anti-commutation relations for the fields. We show that, for particular choices of the deformation, oscillation between massless neutrino species takes place when only Lorentz invariance is violated. On the other hand, if both Lorentz and CPTCPT invariances are violated, we show that there is no oscillation between massless neutrino species. Comparing with the existing experimental data on neutrino oscillations, we obtain bounds on the parameter for Lorentz invariance violation.Comment: Several portions of the paper was completely re-written and new references added. On renormalizability of the massless Thirring model

We discuss the renormalizability of the massless Thirring model in terms of the causal fermion Green functions and correlation functions of left-right fermion densities. We obtain the most general expressions for the causal two-point Green function and correlation function of left-right fermion densities with dynamical dimensions of fermion fields, parameterised by two parameters. The region of variation of these parameters is constrained by the positive definiteness of the norms of the wave functions of the states related to components of the fermion vector current. We show that the dynamical dimensions of fermion fields calculated for causal Green functions and correlation functions of left-right fermion densities can be made equal. This implies the renormalizability of the massless Thirring model in the sense that the ultra-violet cut-off dependence, appearing in the causal fermion Green functions and correlation functions of left-right fermion densities, can be removed by renormalization of the wave function of the massless Thirring fermion fields only.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, the contribution of fermions with opposite chirality is added, the parameterisation of fermion determinant by two parameters is confirmed,it is shown that dynamical dimensions of fermion fields calculated from different correlation functions can be made equal. This allows to remove the dependence on the ultra-violet cut-off by the renormalization of the wave function of Thirring fermion fields onl

Noncommutativity in Field Space and Lorentz Invariance Violation

The connection between Lorentz invariance violation and noncommutativity of fields in a quantum field theory is investigated. A new dispersion relation for a free field theory with just one additional noncommutative parameter is obtained. While values for the noncommutative scale much larger than 10^{-20} eV^{-1} are ruled out by the present experimental status, cosmic ray physics would be compatible with and sensible to a noncommutativity arising from quantum gravity effects. We explore the matter-antimatter asymmetry which is naturally present in this framework.Comment: 10 pages, no figures. Final version to appear in Phys. Lett. B with slight changes in the presentatio

Cosmic Rays and the Search for a Lorentz Invariance Violation

This is an introductory review about the on-going search for a signal of Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) in cosmic rays. We first summarise basic aspects of cosmic rays, focusing on rays of ultra high energy (UHECRs). We discuss the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min (GZK) energy cutoff for cosmic protons, which is predicted due to photopion production in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This is a process of modest energy in the proton rest frame. It can be investigated to a high precision in the laboratory, if Lorentz transformations apply even at factors γO(1011)\gamma \sim O(10^{11}). For heavier nuclei the energy attenuation is even faster due to photo-disintegration, again if this process is Lorentz invariant. Hence the viability of Lorentz symmetry up to tremendous gamma-factors - far beyond accelerator tests - is a central issue. Next we comment on conceptual aspects of Lorentz Invariance and the possibility of its spontaneous breaking. This could lead to slightly particle dependent ``Maximal Attainable Velocities''. We discuss their effect in decays, Cerenkov radiation, the GZK cutoff and neutrino oscillation in cosmic rays. We also review the search for LIV in cosmic gamma-rays. For multi TeV gamma-rays we possibly encounter another puzzle related to the transparency of the CMB, similar to the GZK cutoff. The photons emitted in a Gamma Ray Burst occur at lower energies, but their very long path provides access to information not far from the Planck scale. No LIV has been observed so far. However, even extremely tiny LIV effects could change the predictions for cosmic ray physics drastically. An Appendix is devoted to the recent hypothesis by the Pierre Auger Collaboration, which identifies nearby Active Galactic Nuclei - or objects next to them - as probable UHECR sources.Comment: 81 pages, 15 figures, some points extended and improved, references adde

I review the current status of phenomenological programs inspired by quantum-spacetime research. I stress in particular the significance of results establishing that certain data analyses provide sensitivity to effects introduced genuinely at the Planck scale. And my main focus is on phenomenological programs that managed to affect the directions taken by studies of quantum-spacetime theories.Comment: 125 pages, LaTex. This V2 is updated and more detailed than the V1, particularly for quantum-spacetime phenomenology. The main text of this V2 is about 25% more than the main text of the V1.
