    De l’homme qui aimait les livres au personnage de roman, l’ascension politique de François Mitterrand ne peut être séparée de la littérature. Ce portrait de l’auteur du Coup d’État permanent retrace les différentes postures lettrées endossées par un homme de pouvoir qui se rêva homme de Lettres avant d’être embaumé comme monarque républicain et grand écrivain. Si la symbolique lettrée a joué un rôle essentiel dans la fabrique de la gloire mitterrandienne, elle s’inscrit aussi dans l’ombre portée du général de Gaulle. Fondateur d’une République, l’homme du 18 Juin condense grandeur politique et grandeur littéraire, obligeant ses successeurs à mêler à leur tour carrière de la plume et du suffrage. L’attrait mitterrandien convoque alors un autre récit : celui du roman national. Cette fascination qu’exerce la littérature sur nombre d’hommes politiques français n’en soulève pas moins des interrogations. Pourquoi les hommes politiques s’adonnent-ils à la passion littéraire ? Pourquoi la littérature est-elle une composante indispensable de tout destin national ? À travers l’exceptionnelle trajectoire de François Mitterrand, c’est cette liaison durable du politique et de la littérature au sommet de l’État qui se trouve élucidée. Elle dévoile une esthétisation du politique et une sacralisation de la littérature. Elle explique les raisons de cette exception hexagonale élevée au rang de mythologie : celle de la France, nation littéraire. Elle permet de comprendre la complicité qui unit, depuis l’Ancien Régime, l’homme de Lettres et l’homme d’État

    On non-zero space average density perturbation effects in tokamak plasma reflectometer signals

The non-zero average density perturbation on the phase variation can be seen as an index effect as soon as the shape of the density perturbation does not introduce spectral effects. Amplitude modulation in time follows generally the properties of the cut-off layer seen as a mirror but some specific situations produce a time modulation two times higher than the input time variation of the density perturbation as observed in Tore Supra. The introduction of secondary cut-off can exhibit this effect as shown in 2D simulations

    Observation of confined current ribbon in JET plasmas

    we report the identification of a localised current structure inside the JET plasma. It is a field aligned closed helical ribbon, carrying current in the same direction as the background current profile (co-current), rotating toroidally with the ion velocity (co-rotating). It appears to be located at a flat spot in the plasma pressure profile, at the top of the pedestal. The structure appears spontaneously in low density, high rotation plasmas, and can last up to 1.4 s, a time comparable to a local resistive time. It considerably delays the appearance of the first ELM.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Comparison of three fat suppression sequences for the detection of vertebral detection. Turbo STIR, phase contrast gradient-echo, and MISTEC-Chopper after gadolinium injection

    OBJECTIVES: Assess three fat suppression sequences used to search for spinal metastases: TurboSTIR, phase contrast gradient-echo, and MISTEC-Chopper after gadolinium injection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in 10 patients with primary neoplasia. MIR sequences acquired (1 Tesla) were TurboSTIR, T1 spin-echo with and without gadolinium injection, phase contrast gradient-echo and M-Chop after gadolinium injection. Signal intensity in normal bone marrow, metastatic tissue, and subcutaneous fat as well as background noise was measured. Signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio was determined. Lesion borders, artefacts, and extent of detected lesions were determined quantitatively. Bone marrow signal intensity was also recorded. RESULTS: S/N ratio was best with gradient-echo which identified well the borders of lesions within the hemopoietic marrow. For lesions located in high-fat marrow (as in post-radiation marrow), the high intensity signal of the lesion confounded with the fat signal. TurboSTIR gave effective fat signal suppression and was particularly useful for yellow marrow, less so for red marrow. This technique confounded cell proliferation with perilesional edema (enlarging lesion extention). In one case, this sequence did not detect a small lesion visible with the two other sequences. This sequence was sensitive to artefacts (especially vascular artefacts) which can produce false nodular images. M-Chop gave good suppression of vertebral fat tissue (better for yellow marrow) but subjective detection of lesions was more difficult. CONCLUSION: The phase contrast gradient-echo sequence after gadlinium injection appeared to be the best sequence excepting cases of post-trauma (radiotherapy or chemotherapy) fat transformation of the marrow where the TurboSTIR sequence could be preferred

    Characterisation of local ICRF heat loads on the JET ILW

    When using Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency (ICRF) heating, enhanced heat-fluxes are commonly observed on some plasma facing components close to the antennas. Experiments have recently been carried out on JET with the new ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) to characterize the heat flux to the JET ICRF antennas. Using Infra-Red thermography and thermal models of the tiles, heat-fluxes were evaluated from the surface temperature increase during the RF phase of L-mode plasmas. The maximum observed heat-flux intensity was ~ 4.5 MW/m2 when operating with -{\pi}/2 current drive strap phasing at power level of 2MW per antenna and with a 4 cm distance between the plasma and the outer limiters. Heat-fluxes are reduced when using dipole strap phasing. The fraction of ICRF power deposited on the antenna limiters or septa was in the range 2-10% for dipole phasing and 10-20% with +/-{\pi}/2 phasing.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

    Modelling of the effect of ELMs on fuel retention at the bulk W divertor of JET

    Effect of ELMs on fuel retention at the bulk W target of JET ITER-Like Wall was studied with multi-scale calculations. Plasma input parameters were taken from ELMy H-mode plasma experiment. The energetic intra-ELM fuel particles get implanted and create near-surface defects up to depths of few tens of nm, which act as the main fuel trapping sites during ELMs. Clustering of implantation-induced vacancies were found to take place. The incoming flux of inter-ELM plasma particles increases the different filling levels of trapped fuel in defects. The temperature increase of the W target during the pulse increases the fuel detrapping rate. The inter-ELM fuel particle flux refills the partially emptied trapping sites and fills new sites. This leads to a competing effect on the retention and release rates of the implanted particles. At high temperatures the main retention appeared in larger vacancy clusters due to increased clustering rate

    On the mechanisms governing gas penetration into a tokamak plasma during a massive gas injection

    A new 1D radial fluid code, IMAGINE, is used to simulate the penetration of gas into a tokamak plasma during a massive gas injection (MGI). The main result is that the gas is in general strongly braked as it reaches the plasma, due to mechanisms related to charge exchange and (to a smaller extent) recombination. As a result, only a fraction of the gas penetrates into the plasma. Also, a shock wave is created in the gas which propagates away from the plasma, braking and compressing the incoming gas. Simulation results are quantitatively consistent, at least in terms of orders of magnitude, with experimental data for a D 2 MGI into a JET Ohmic plasma. Simulations of MGI into the background plasma surrounding a runaway electron beam show that if the background electron density is too high, the gas may not penetrate, suggesting a possible explanation for the recent results of Reux et al in JET (2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 093013)
