Creating identity : the role of George Gordon, Lord Byron, in realizing the Romantic poet

    Get PDF
The Romantic Age in literature was a time of change and revision, especially in the world of heroes and the fictional worlds in which they lived and played. Many socalled heroes came into play at this time, but this was not enough for the Romantic poets, especially George Gordon, Lord Byron. The Byronic hero became the solution to the problem created by an unsatisfactory hero. In creating the Byronic hero, Byron changed literature, allowing poets and readers alike to participate actively in the processes of writing and reading. This work will examine Byron\u27s development of his hero in Childe Harold\u27s Pilgrimage and how other poets, such as Karel Hynek Macha in his Maj, used the Byronic hero as a model that would help them foster a revival of both literature and nationhood. This work explores why the Byronic hero was adopted and embraced by those in England and abroad

Perceived Stress and Academic Engagement for Dual Language Learners: Grit and Academic Support as Protective Factors

    Get PDF
For decades, the academic achievement gap between dual language learners (DLLs) and their non-DLL counterparts has remained at the forefront of education research. Stress is considered one of many contributors given its negative effects on academic achievement. However, little research exists on the effects of stress on academic engagement for DLLs, despite evidence that academic engagement is paramount for academic success. This study examines grit (teacher-reported and student-reported) and academic support (teacher and peer) as protective factors via moderation model testing of the relationship between perceived stress and two subtypes of academic engagement: emotional engagement (teacher-reported and student-reported) and behavioral engagement (student-reported only). Relying on transactional stress theory and risk and resilience theory, this model was tested using data collected from a school serving a majority of low-income, dual language learner (DLL) 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students (N = 142, 75% Latinx). Results indicated peer academic support was a protective factor for high-stressed DLL students (with outcome of student-reported emotional engagement) while student-reported grit was a protective factor for low-stressed DLL students (with outcome of teacher-reported emotional engagement). Schools and school psychologists are encouraged to address DLL students’ stress and implement evidence-based, systems-level practices that can mitigate the effects of stress on academic engagement for this demographic

This study included randomized and non-randomized controlled trials on pharmacological treatment of compulsive buying published in English or Portuguese. Databases evaluated were MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Biological Abstracts and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Of all six selected articles, only two were placebo-controlled randomized trials, and one had a first open-label phase followed by a second placebo-controlled phase. It is important to stress that all studies excluded bipolar patients. All the studies reviewed included small samples (from 10 to 42 patients). Current available evidence regarding pharmacological treatment of compulsive buying is poor due to the lack of studies using more rigorous methodology.O presente estudo inclui ensaios clínicos randomizados, controlados ou não, a respeito do tratamento farmacológico de comprar compulsivo, publicados em inglês ou em português nas bases MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Biological Abstracts e Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.

Development and characterization of a novel sustainable probiotic goat whey cheese containing second cheese whey powder and stabilized with thyme essential oil and sodium citrate

Probiotic goat whey cheeses with added second cheese whey powder (SCWP) were developed, resulting in creamy and spreadable products. The products contained Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium animalis, as well as thyme essential oil and sodium citrate. Matrices of probiotic whey cheeses, with and without additives, were produced and stored at 5 °C for 21 days. Microbial and chemical profiles were evaluated weekly. The composition of the optimum matrix, formulated with whey cheese, probiotic culture, SCWP, thyme essential oil and sodium citrate (WCPSTC) was, expressed in % (w/w): protein (10.78 ± 0.08), fat (7.59 ± 0.03), dry matter (25.64 ± 0.13), ash (2.81 ± 0.02) and lactose (3.16 ± 0.04). Viable cell numbers of both probiotic cultures in matrix WCPSTC remained above 107 CFU g−1. This finding is of the utmost importance since it proves that both probiotic bacteria, citrate and thyme essential oil can be combined in order to increase the shelf-life and functional value of dairy products. All matrices’ pH values decreased during storage, yet only matrix WCPSTC remained above 5.0 pH units. The results indicated that the development of a probiotic whey cheese incorporating a dairy by-product, SCWP, is possible without compromising its chemical, microbiological or sensorial stability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Downregulation of mTOR Signaling Increases Stem Cell Population Telomere Length during Starvation of Immortal Planarians

Reduction of caloric intake delays and prevents age-associated diseases and extends the life span in many organisms. It may be that these benefits are due to positive effects of caloric restriction on stem cell function. We use the planarian model Schmidtea mediterranea, an immortal animal that adapts to long periods of starvation by shrinking in size, to investigate the effects of starvation on telomere length. We show that the longest telomeres are a general signature of planarian adult stem cells. We also observe that starvation leads to an enrichment of stem cells with the longest telomeres and that this enrichment is dependent on mTOR signaling. We propose that one important effect of starvation for the rejuvenation of the adult stem cell pool is through increasing the median telomere length in somatic stem cells. Such a mechanism has broad implications for how dietary effects on aging are mediated at the whole-organism level.C.G.-E. was funded by a Contrato de Investigadores Miguel Servet (CP12/03214) and by the FLI. The work is framed in the study of the analysis of the supply chain of the peasant markets of the municipality of Fuente de Oro (META) and Viota (CUNDINAMARCA), where we will give answers to the questions posed in the guide. The agri-food supply chain proposes bringing the products of the field to the table without the need of third parties, in Colombia this phenomenon is coming to occur since they are making temporary peasant places which are only made one day a week and it is Sunday where you buy the products from the farmers that produce it at low costs of good quality since they would not sell damaged or expired products as they offer us in the squares or supermarkets and place a discount for customers to take them

Biochemical and thermodynamic characteristics of a new serine protease from Mucor subtilissimus URM 4133

    Get PDF
A protease from the fungus Mucor subtilissimus URM 4133, capable of producing bioactive peptides from goat casein, was purified. SDS-PAGE and zymography showed a molecular mass of 30 kDa. The enzyme was active and stable in a wide pH range (6.0–10.5) and (5.0–10.5), respectively. Optimum temperature was at 45–50 °C and stability was above 80 % (40 °C/2 h). Activity was not influenced by ions or organic substances (Triton, Tween, SDS and DMSO), but was completely inhibited by PMSF, suggesting that it belongs to the serine protease family. The Km and Vmax were 2.35 mg azocasein.mL-1 and 333.33 U.mg protein-1, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters of irreversible denaturation (40–60 °C) were enthalpy 123.63 – 123.46 kJ.mol-1, entropy 120.24–122.28 kJ.mol-1 and Gibbs free energy 85.97 – 82.45 kJ.mol-1. Any peptide sequences compatible with this protease were found after analysis by MALDI-TOF, which suggests that it is a new serine protease.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
