    CMS search plans and sensitivity to new physics with dijets

    CMS will use dijets to search for physics beyond the standard model during early LHC running. The inclusive jet cross section as a function of jet transverse momentum, with 10 inverse picobarns of integrated luminosity, is sensitive to contact interactions beyond the reach of the Tevatron. The dijet mass distribution will be used to search for dijet resonances coming from new particles, for example an excited quark. Additional sensitivity to the existence of contact interactions or dijet resonances can be obtained by comparing dijet rates in two distinct pseudorapidity regions.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in J.     A Study of Relatıonship between Perceived Organızational Justice and Individualism Collectivism Values Among Academic Staff

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the individuals’ perceptions of justice in the organizations they work in and the personality tendencies of individualism or collectivism they have. For that reason, firstly the concept of organizational justice and the values of collectivism and individualism were explained; their relationship was mentioned through theoretical and empirical studies in the literature. As measurement tool, survey method was used. The surveys were conducted on 133 academicians working at Bartin University which is one of the state universities in Turkey. As a result of doing reliability analysis and factor analysis, the last form of scale was given. The perceived organizational justice handled in the scale was composed of three dimensions which are distributive justice, procedural justice and interactional justice; and despite individualism and collectivism have four sub-dimensions (horizontal individualism, vertical individualism, horizontal collectivism and vertical collectivism) this was not taken into account in the study and they were discussed from only individualism and collectivism dimensions. In consequence of ANOVA analyses performed, it is found that there is a low relation between collectivism value and distributive justice as well as between individualism value and interactional justice. The findings of ANOVA analysis showed that in the demographic characteristics only the title variable groups showed significant differences between interactional justice and individualism. By multi-regression analysis, it is seen that as much as procedural justice increases the exhibited collectivism characteristic increases, in similar way as much as distributive justice increases the collectivism characteristic increases. There was no obvious significant correlation between individualism variable and justice dimensions

    Androgen receptor mutations in prostate cancer

    We analyzed the frequency and relevance of mutations in the coding region of the androgen receptor (AR) in genomic DNA extracted from 137 specimens of prostate cancer. The specimens were obtained from the primary tumors of patients affected by stage B disease [15 nonmicrodissected (group 1A) and 84 microdissected (group 1B)] and from the metastatic deposits of individuals with stage D1 disease [8 nonmicrodissected (group 2A) and 30 microdissected (group 2B)] who had not undergone androgen ablation therapy. The study was conducted by PCR-single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of exons 2-8 in the four groups and direct sequence analysis of exon 1 in group 1B. As positive and negative controls, we used genomic DNA extracted from genital skin fibroblasts of patients affected by various forms of androgen resistance with known mutations in the AR. To control for genetic instability, PCR-SSCP analysis of exon 2 of the human progesterone receptor was carried out on each specimen. The overall number of mutations detected was 11 (8%). No mutations were detected in any of the 99 patients with stage B disease. Eleven mutations were detected in exons 2-8 in 8 of the 38 patients with stage D1 disease (all in group 2B). Simultaneous analysis of exon 2 of the progesterone receptor was carried out, and no SSCP changes were identified. These data suggest that AR mutations are rare and presumably do not play a role in the initial phase of prostatic carcinogenesis. The presence of a significant number of AR mutations in metastatic disease indicates that mutations of this molecule may play a role in the most advanced phases of the natural history of this disease, either by facilitating growth or acquisition of the metastatic phenotype

    Nanotransfer Printing of Organic and Carbon Nanotube Thin-Film Transistors on Plastic Substrates

    A printing process for high-resolution transfer of all components for organic electronic devices on plastic substrates has been developed and demonstrated for pentacene (Pn), poly (3-hexylthiophene) and carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film transistors (TFTs). The nanotransfer printing process allows fabrication of an entire device without exposing any component to incompatible processes and with reduced need for special chemical preparation of transfer or device substrates. Devices on plastic substrates include a Pn TFT with a saturation, field-effect mobility of 0.09 cm^2 (Vs)^-1 and on/off ratio approximately 10^4 and a CNT TFT which exhibits ambipolar behavior and no hysteresis.Comment: to appear in Applied Physics Letter

    Automated discrimination of psychotropic drugs in mice via computer vision-based analysis

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.We developed an inexpensive computer vision-based method utilizing an algorithm which differentiates drug-induced behavioral alterations. The mice were observed in an open-field arena and their activity was recorded for 100 min. For each animal the first 50 min of observation were regarded as the drug-free period. Each animal was exposed to only one drug and they were injected (i.p.) with either amphetamine or cocaine as the stimulant drugs or morphine or diazepam as the inhibitory agents. The software divided the arena into virtual grids and calculated the number of visits (sojourn counts) to the grids and instantaneous speeds within these grids by analyzing video data. These spatial distributions of sojourn counts and instantaneous speeds were used to construct feature vectors which were fed to the classifier algorithms for the final step of matching the animals and the drugs. The software decided which of the animals were drug-treated at a rate of 96%. The algorithm achieved 92% accuracy in sorting the data according to the increased or decreased activity and then determined which drug was delivered. The method differentiated the type of psychostimulant or inhibitory drugs with a success ratio of 70% and 80%, respectively.     Analysis of rice glycosyl hydrolase family 1 and expression of Os4bglu12 β-glucosidase

    BACKGROUND: Glycosyl hydrolase family 1 (GH1) β-glucosidases have been implicated in physiologically important processes in plants, such as response to biotic and abiotic stresses, defense against herbivores, activation of phytohormones, lignification, and cell wall remodeling. Plant GH1 β-glucosidases are encoded by a multigene family, so we predicted the structures of the genes and the properties of their protein products, and characterized their phylogenetic relationship to other plant GH1 members, their expression and the activity of one of them, to begin to decipher their roles in rice. RESULTS: Forty GH1 genes could be identified in rice databases, including 2 possible endophyte genes, 2 likely pseudogenes, 2 gene fragments, and 34 apparently competent rice glycosidase genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that GH1 members with closely related sequences have similar gene structures and are often clustered together on the same chromosome. Most of the genes appear to have been derived from duplications that occurred after the divergence of rice and Arabidopsis thaliana lineages from their common ancestor, and the two plants share only 8 common gene lineages. At least 31 GH1 genes are expressed in a range of organs and stages of rice, based on the cDNA and EST sequences in public databases. The cDNA of the Os4bglu12 gene, which encodes a protein identical at 40 of 44 amino acid residues with the N-terminal sequence of a cell wall-bound enzyme previously purified from germinating rice, was isolated by RT-PCR from rice seedlings. A thioredoxin-Os4bglu12 fusion protein expressed in Escherichia coli efficiently hydrolyzed β-(1,4)-linked oligosaccharides of 3–6 glucose residues and laminaribiose. CONCLUSION: Careful analysis of the database sequences produced more reliable rice GH1 gene structure and protein product predictions. Since most of these genes diverged after the divergence of the ancestors of rice and Arabidopsis thaliana, only a few of their functions could be implied from those of GH1 enzymes from Arabidopsis and other dicots. This implies that analysis of GH1 enzymes in monocots is necessary to understand their function in the major grain crops. To begin this analysis, Os4bglu12 β-glucosidase was characterized and found to have high exoglucanase activity, consistent with a role in cell wall metabolism

    Porous titanium manufactured by a novel powder tapping method using spherical salt bead space holders: characterisation and mechanical properties

    Porous Ti with open porosity in the range of 70–80% has been made using Ti powder and a particulate leaching technique using porous, spherical, NaCl beads. By incorporating the Ti powder into a pre-existing network of salt beads, by tapping followed by compaction, salt dissolution and “sintering”, porous structures with uniform density, pore and strut sizes and a predictable level of connectivity have been produced, showing a significant improvement on the structures made by conventional powder mixing processes. Parts made using beads with sizes in the range of 0.5-1.0 mm show excellent promise as porous metals for medical devices, showing structures and porosities similar to those of commercial porous metals used in this sector, with inter-pore connections that are similar to trabecular bone. The elastic modulus (0.86GPa) is lower than those for commercial porous metals and more closely matches that of trabecular bone and good compressive yield strength is retained (21MPa). The ability to further tailor the structure, in terms of the density and the size of the pores and interconnections has also been demonstrated by immersion of the porous components in acid

    Cardiovascular safety in refractory incontinent patients with overactive bladder receiving add-on mirabegron therapy to solifenacin (BESIDE)

    © 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Summary : Aims/objectives: : In the BESIDE study, combination therapy (antimuscarinic [solifenacin] and β3-adrenoceptor agonist [mirabegron]) improved efficacy over solifenacin monotherapy without exacerbating anticholinergic side effects in overactive bladder (OAB) patients; however, a potential synergistic effect on the cardiovascular (CV) system requires investigation. Methods: OAB patients remaining incontinent despite daily solifenacin 5 mg during 4-week single-blind run-in, were randomised 1:1:1 to double-blind daily combination (solifenacin 5 mg/mirabegron 25 mg, increasing to 50 mg after week 4), solifenacin 5 or 10 mg for 12 weeks. CV safety assessments included frequency of CV-related treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), change from baseline in vital signs (systolic blood pressure [SBP], diastolic blood pressure [DBP], pulse rate) and electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters. Results: The frequency of hypertension, tachycardia and ECG QT prolongation, respectively, was low and comparable across combination (1.1%, 0.3%, 0.1%), solifenacin 5 mg (0.7%, 0.1%, 0.1%), and solifenacin 10 mg groups (0.8%, 0%, 0.1%). Adjusted mean (SE) change from baseline to end of treatment (EoT) in SBP, DBP, and pulse rate with combination (0.07 mm Hg [0.38], -0.35 mm Hg [0.26], 0.47 bpm [0.28]), solifenacin 5 mg (-0.93 mm Hg [0.38], -0.45 mm Hg [0.26], 0.43 bpm [0.28]) and solifenacin 10 mg (-1.28 mm Hg [0.38], -0.48 mm Hg [0.26], 0.27 bpm [0.28]) was generally comparable, with the exception of a mean treatment difference of ~1 mm Hg in SBP between combination and solifenacin monotherapy; SBP was unchanged with combination and decreased with solifenacin monotherapy. Mean changes from baseline to EoT in ECG parameters were generally similar across treatment groups, except for QT interval corrected using Fridericia's formula, which was higher with solifenacin 10 mg (3.30 mseconds) vs. combination (0.49 mseconds) and solifenacin 5 mg (0.77 mseconds). Conclusion: The comparable frequency of CV-related TEAEs, changes in vital signs and ECG parameters indicates no synergistic effect on CV safety outcomes when mirabegron and solifenacin are combined
