    Nanotransfer Printing of Organic and Carbon Nanotube Thin-Film Transistors on Plastic Substrates

    A printing process for high-resolution transfer of all components for organic electronic devices on plastic substrates has been developed and demonstrated for pentacene (Pn), poly (3-hexylthiophene) and carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film transistors (TFTs). The nanotransfer printing process allows fabrication of an entire device without exposing any component to incompatible processes and with reduced need for special chemical preparation of transfer or device substrates. Devices on plastic substrates include a Pn TFT with a saturation, field-effect mobility of 0.09 cm^2 (Vs)^-1 and on/off ratio approximately 10^4 and a CNT TFT which exhibits ambipolar behavior and no hysteresis.Comment: to appear in Applied Physics Letter

    Androgen receptor mutations in prostate cancer

    We analyzed the frequency and relevance of mutations in the coding region of the androgen receptor (AR) in genomic DNA extracted from 137 specimens of prostate cancer. The specimens were obtained from the primary tumors of patients affected by stage B disease [15 nonmicrodissected (group 1A) and 84 microdissected (group 1B)] and from the metastatic deposits of individuals with stage D1 disease [8 nonmicrodissected (group 2A) and 30 microdissected (group 2B)] who had not undergone androgen ablation therapy. The study was conducted by PCR-single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of exons 2-8 in the four groups and direct sequence analysis of exon 1 in group 1B. As positive and negative controls, we used genomic DNA extracted from genital skin fibroblasts of patients affected by various forms of androgen resistance with known mutations in the AR. To control for genetic instability, PCR-SSCP analysis of exon 2 of the human progesterone receptor was carried out on each specimen. The overall number of mutations detected was 11 (8%). No mutations were detected in any of the 99 patients with stage B disease. Eleven mutations were detected in exons 2-8 in 8 of the 38 patients with stage D1 disease (all in group 2B). Simultaneous analysis of exon 2 of the progesterone receptor was carried out, and no SSCP changes were identified. These data suggest that AR mutations are rare and presumably do not play a role in the initial phase of prostatic carcinogenesis. The presence of a significant number of AR mutations in metastatic disease indicates that mutations of this molecule may play a role in the most advanced phases of the natural history of this disease, either by facilitating growth or acquisition of the metastatic phenotype

    Efficacy of tadalafil in Egyptian and Turkish men with erectile dysfunction

    A randomised, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled, 12-week study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 20-mg tadalafil taken ‘as needed’ in a population of men with erectile dysfunction (ED) from Egypt and Turkey. One hundred and thirty-two patients were randomised in this study. Tadalafil was superior to placebo on all three co-primary efficacy end points. The mean change from baseline for the erectile function domain of the International Index of Erectile Function was 9.3 ± 0.8 for the tadalafil group and 2.3 ± 1.6 for the placebo group. Tadalafil-treated patients reported a significantly greater improvement in the mean percentage of successful penetrations (tadalafil: 34.5 ± 4.1; placebo: −4.6 ± 8.1) and successful intercourse attempts (tadalafil: 52.2 ± 3.8; placebo: 16.8 ± 7.8) than placebo-treated patients as measured by the Sexual Encounter Profile. Tadalafil was generally well tolerated with 82% of adverse events being mild in severity.     Thrombotic risk assessment in antiphospholipid syndrome: do noncriteria antibodies contribute?

    BACKGROUND/AIM: In this cross-sectional study, it was aimed to test the predictive value of noncriteria antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in addition to the global antiphospholipid syndrome score (GAPSS) in predicting vascular thrombosis (VT) in a cohort of patients with APS and aPL (+) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 50 patients with primary APS, 68 with SLE/APS, and 52 with aPL (+) SLE who were classified according to VT as VT ± pregnancy morbidity (PM), PM only or aPL (+) SLE. Antiphospholipid serology consisting of lupus anticoagulant (LA), anticardiolipin (aCL) immunoglobulin G (IgG)/IgM/IgA, antibeta2 glycoprotein I (aβ2GPI) IgG/IgM/IgA, antiphosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) IgG/IgM and antidomain-I (aDI) IgG was determined for each patient. The GAPSS and adjusted GAPSS (aGAPSS) were calculated for each patient, as previously defined. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with thrombosis as the dependent variable and high GAPSS, aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG as independent variables. RESULTS: The mean GAPSS and aGAPSS of the study population were 11.6 ± 4.4 and 9.6 ± 3.8. Both the VT ± PM APS (n = 105) and PM only APS (n = 13) groups had significantly higher GAPSS and aGAPSS values compared to the aPL (+) SLE (n = 52) group. The patients with recurrent thrombosis had higher aGAPSS but not GAPSS than those with a single thrombotic event. The computed area under the receiver operating characteristic curve demonstrated that a GAPSS ≥13 and aGAPSS ≥10 had the best predictive values for thrombosis. Logistic regression analysis including a GAPSS ≥13, aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG showed that none of the factors other than a GAPSS ≥13 could predict thrombosis. CONCLUSION: Both the GAPSS and aGAPSS successfully predict the thrombotic risk in aPL (+) patients and aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG do not contribute to high a GAPSS or aGAPSS

In this paper, we develop an approximation method based on collocation finite elements by cubic B-spline functions to solve fractional diffusion equation for force-free case formulated with Riemann-Liouville operator. Some numerical examples of interest are provided to show the accuracy of the method. A comparison between exact analytical solution and a numerical one has been made

    Quantum phase transition in a single-molecule quantum dot

    Quantum criticality is the intriguing possibility offered by the laws of quantum mechanics when the wave function of a many-particle physical system is forced to evolve continuously between two distinct, competing ground states. This phenomenon, often related to a zero-temperature magnetic phase transition, can be observed in several strongly correlated materials such as heavy fermion compounds or possibly high-temperature superconductors, and is believed to govern many of their fascinating, yet still unexplained properties. In contrast to these bulk materials with very complex electronic structure, artificial nanoscale devices could offer a new and simpler vista to the comprehension of quantum phase transitions. This long-sought possibility is demonstrated by our work in a fullerene molecular junction, where gate voltage induces a crossing of singlet and triplet spin states at zero magnetic field. Electronic tunneling from metallic contacts into the C60\rm{C_{60}} quantum dot provides here the necessary many-body correlations to observe a true quantum critical behavior.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Plasma Pyruvate Kinase M2 as a marker of vascular inflammation in Giant Cell Arteritis

    OBJECTIVES: Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) is a large vessel vasculitis in which metabolically active immune cells play an important role. GCA diagnosis is based on CRP/ESR and temporal artery biopsies (TABs), in combination with [18F]FDG-PET/CT relying on enhanced glucose uptake by glycolytic macrophages. Here, we studied circulating Pyruvate Kinase M2 (PKM2), a glycolytic enzyme, as a possible systemic marker of vessel wall inflammation in GCA. METHODS: Immunohistochemical detection of PKM2 was performed on inflamed (n = 12) and non-inflamed (n = 4) TABs from GCA patients and non-GCA (n = 9) patients. Dimeric PKM2 levels were assessed in plasma of GCA patients (n = 44), age-matched healthy controls (HC, n = 41), metastatic melanoma patients (n = 7) and infection controls (n = 11). CRP, ESR and macrophage markers calprotectin and YKL-40 were correlated with plasma PKM2 levels. To detect the cellular source of plasma PKM2 in tissue, double immunofluorescence staining was performed on inflamed GCA TABs. [18F]FDG-PET scans of 23 GCA patients were analyzed and maximum standard uptake values (SUVmax) and target to background ratios (TBR) were calculated. RESULTS: PKM2 is abundantly expressed in TABs of GCA patients. Dimeric PKM2 plasma levels were elevated in GCA and correlated with CRP, ESR, calprotectin, and YKL-40 levels. Elevated plasma PKM2 levels were downmodulated by GC-treatment. PKM2 was detected in both macrophages and T cells at the site of vascular inflammation. Circulating PKM2 levels correlated with average TBR PET scores. CONCLUSION: Elevated plasma PKM2 levels reflect active vessel inflammation in GCA and may assist in disease diagnosis and in disease monitoring

    Observation of an Excited Bc+ State

    Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of s=7, 8, and 13 TeV, the observation of an excited Bc+ state in the Bc+π+π- invariant-mass spectrum is reported. The observed peak has a mass of 6841.2±0.6(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the Bc+ mass. It is consistent with expectations of the Bc∗(2S31)+ state reconstructed without the low-energy photon from the Bc∗(1S31)+→Bc+γ decay following Bc∗(2S31)+→Bc∗(1S31)+π+π-. A second state is seen with a global (local) statistical significance of 2.2σ (3.2σ) and a mass of 6872.1±1.3(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, and is consistent with the Bc(2S10)+ state.     Measurement of the Bs0J/ψηB_{s}^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \eta lifetime

    Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb13 fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the effective lifetime in the Bs0J/ψηB^0_s \rightarrow J/\psi \eta decay mode, τeff\tau_{\textrm{eff}}, is measured to be τeff=1.479±0.034 (stat)±0.011 (syst)\tau_{\textrm{eff}} = 1.479 \pm 0.034~\textrm{(stat)} \pm 0.011 ~\textrm{(syst)} ps. Assuming CPCP conservation, τeff\tau_{\textrm{eff}} corresponds to the lifetime of the light Bs0B_s^0 mass eigenstate.
