Identification of Animal Species and Foreign Tissues in Ready-to-Sell Fresh Processed Meat Products
The demand for ready-to-eat meat products has recently increased, and routine controls are inevitable to provide food safety. Therefore, a total of 250 fresh processed beef meat products collected from local markets and restaurants in the districts of Istanbul mostly with low purchasing power were investigated by histological and biomolecular methods. Chicken tissue was found in 62 (24.8%) of the analysed samples and horse tissue was found in 2 (0.8%) samples, while pork tissue was not detected. Additionally, foreign tissues were detected in 70 (28%) of 250 samples. PCR assays combined with histological examinations can be used as an important method in establishing food safety by determining the deliberate or accidental adulterations of meat products
Evaluation of vertebral artery dominance, hypoplasia and variations in the origin: angiographic study in 254 patients
Background: The aim of this study was to determine the dimensional characteristics and variations in the origin of vertebral arteries (VA).
Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed angiographic studies in 254 patients (133 males, 121 females) for the evaluation of diameter differences in VA. We examined different criteria from the literature (difference of ≥ 0.3 mm, ≥ 0.8 mm, ≥ 1 mm between the widths of two VA and diameter ratio more than 1.4) to find out the dominant VA, rate of co-dominance and hypoplasia. The differences among groups were analysed using the c2 and Kruskal-Wallis test. Also concordance analysis test was used to determine correspondence between the tests. We also noticed the variations in the origin of VA.
Results: The average diameter of VA in 254 patients was 3.21 ± 0.7 mm on the right, and 3.16 ± 0.7 mm on the left. The average diameter difference was found 0.88 ± 0.7 mm. The rate of hypoplasia was found 7.1% on the right and 9.4% on the left. Among 254 patients according to the criterion of any diameter difference; right side was found wider in 126 (49.6%) patients and left side was found wider in 120 (47.2%) patients. The criterion of 0.3 mm or greater difference showed right VA dominance in 107 (42.1%) patients, left VA dominance in 99 (39%) patients. Co-dominance was mainly observed when we used the criteria of 0.8 mm and 1 mm or greater difference and diameter ratio more than 1.4. We found out harmony of two criterion of difference of ≥ 0.8 mm and ≥ 1 mm (concordance analysis test, 76.1%). There was no statistically significant relation between age, gender and any dominance criteria (p > 0.05). The majority of VA showed classical origin arising from both subclavian arteries with a rate of 94.9%.
Conclusions: The most striking result we have found is the dominance of the right VA in diameter by using all different criteria unlike with previous reports in the literature.

Observations of whistler mode waves with nonlinear parallel electric fields near the dayside magnetic reconnection separatrix by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission
We show observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission of whistler mode waves in the Earth's low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) during a magnetic reconnection event. The waves propagated obliquely to the magnetic field toward the X line and were confined to the edge of a southward jet in the LLBL. Bipolar parallel electric fields interpreted as electrostatic solitary waves (ESW) are observed intermittently and appear to be in phase with the parallel component of the whistler oscillations. The polarity of the ESWs suggests that if they propagate with the waves, they are electron enhancements as opposed to electron holes. The reduced electron distribution shows a shoulder in the distribution for parallel velocities between 17,000 and 22,000 km/s, which persisted during the interval when ESWs were observed, and is near the phase velocity of the whistlers. This shoulder can drive Langmuir waves, which were observed in the high-frequency parallel electric field data
How does a biopsy of endoscopically normal terminal ileum contribute to the diagnosis? Which patients should undergo biopsy?
Background: Terminal ileum endoscopy and biopsy are the diagnostic tools of diseases attacking the ileum. However, abnormal histological findings can be found in endoscopically normal terminal ileum.Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the histopathological results of biopsies from endoscopically normal terminal ileum in order to determine pre-procedure clinical and laboratory factors predicting abnormal histopathological results, if any.Methods: A total of 297 patients who underwent colonoscopy and terminal ileum biopsy and had normal terminal ileum or a few aphthous ulcers in the terminal ileum together with completely normal colon mucosa were included in the study. The patients were grouped into two arms as normal cases and cases with aphthous ulcers. Histopathological and pre-procedural laboratory results of patients were analyzed according to their indications.Results: The terminal ileum was endoscopically normal in 200 patients, and 97 patients had aphthous ulcers. Chronic ileitis rate was present in 5.5% of those with endoscopically normal terminal ileum and in 39.2% of the patients with aphthous ulcers. In both groups, the highest rate of chronic ileitis was detected in the patients with known inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (15.4 and 50%, respectively), anemia (9.5 and 43.5%, respectively), and in the patients having chronic diarrhea together with abdominal pain (7.7 and 44.8%, respectively). We found that the sensitivity of mean platelet volume for predicting chronic ileitis was 87% and the specificity was 45% at a cut-off value lower than 9.35 fl.Conclusion: In anemia indication or chronic diarrhea together with abdominal pain, the frequency of aphthous ulcers detected by ileoscopy and the frequency of chronic ileitis detected histopathologically despite a normal-appearing ileum were elevated.Keywords: Terminal ileum; ileoscopy; chronic ileitis; inflammatory bowel diseas
Low dark current N structure superlattice MWIR photodetectors
Commercially available read out integrated circuits (ROICs) require the FPA to have high dynamic resistance area product at zero bias (R0A) which is directly related to dark current of the detector. Dark current arises from bulk and surface contributions. Recent band structure engineering studies significantly suppressed the bulk contribution of the type-II superlattice infrared photodetectors (N structure, M structure, W structure). In this letter, we will present improved dark current results for unipolar barrier complex supercell superlattice system which is called as "N structure". The unique electronic band structure of the N structure increases electron-hole overlap under bias, significantly. N structure aims to improve absorption by manipulating electron and hole wavefunctions that are spatially separated in T2SLs, increasing the absorption while decreasing the dark current. In order to engineer the wavefunctions, we introduce a thin AlSb layer between InAs and GaSb layers in the growth direction which also acts as a unipolar electron barrier. Despite the difficulty of perfect lattice matching of InAs and AlSb, such a design is expected to reduce dark current. Experiments were carried out on Single pixel with mesa sizes of 100 × 100 - 700 × 700 μm photodiodes. Temperature dependent dark current with corresponding R0A resistance values are reported. © 2014 SPIE
Experimental investigation of pressure-drop characteristics across multi-layer porous metal structures
This study investigates the effect of airflow (in the range of 0–70 m s-1) on the pressure-drop characteristics for a novel multi-layered, nickel-based porous metal, as a function of thickness (affected by sectioning) and density (affected by compression). In addition to generating unique data for these materials, the study highlights the need for precise pinpointing of the different flow regimes (Darcy, Forchheimer and Turbulent) in order to enable accurate determination of the permeability (K) and form drag coefficient (C) defined by the Forchheimer equation and to understand the complex dependence of length-normalised pressure drop on sample thickness
Spectral density of random graphs with topological constraints
The spectral density of random graphs with topological constraints is
analysed using the replica method. We consider graph ensembles featuring
generalised degree-degree correlations, as well as those with a community
structure. In each case an exact solution is found for the spectral density in
the form of consistency equations depending on the statistical properties of
the graph ensemble in question. We highlight the effect of these topological
