| The participants obtaind several interesting results in combinatorial number theory and geometry, graph theory, diophantine approximation, we list just a few of these results.. Elekes and Ruzsa give a common generalization of the Freiman, Balog-Szemerédi and Laczkovich-Ruzsa theorems, unifying in this way the subject and improving a lot of earlier results. Elekes with E. Szabó achieved a breakthrough in the general problem of characterizing configurations having a lot of reguarity, improving some earlier results. Szemerédi with A. Khalfalah proves the follwing conjecture of Sárközy, Roth and T. Sós: if we divide the set of integers into finitely many classes, then in one of the classes we can find two numbers such that their sum is a square, and with V. Vu he proves a conjecture of Folkman. Biró improves a result of Ruzsa and Kolountzakis on tilings of the integers, and, he proves generalizations and strengthenings of some results in the subject 'characterizing sequences'. Ruzsa and B. Green determine the size of the largest sumfree set in an arbitrary finite Abelian group. L. Lovász and T. Sós showed that generalized quasirandom sequences (whose subgraph densities match those of a fixed finite weighted graph) have a finite structure. T. Sós with co-authors defines the distance of two graphs that reflects the similarity , the closeness of both local and global properties

This paper is a continuation of [10], where P. Erdos, A. Hajnal, V. T. Sos. and E. Szemeredi investigated the following problem: Assume that a so called forbidden graph L and a function f(n) = o(n) are fixed. What is the maximum number of edges a graph G(n) on n vertices can have without containing L as a subgraph, and also without having more than f(n) independent vertices? This problem is motivated by the classical Turan and Ramsey theorems, and also by some applications of the Turin theorem to geometry, analysis (in particular, potential theory) [27 29], [11-13]. In this paper we are primarily interested in the following problem. Let (G(n)) be a graph sequence where G(n) has n vertices and the edges of G(n) are coloured by the colours chi1,...,chi(r), so that the subgraph of colour chi(nu) contains no complete subgraph K(pnu), (nu = 1,...,r). Further, assume that the size of any independent set in G(n) is o(n) (as n --> infinity). What is the maximum number of edges in G(n) under these conditions? One of the main results of this paper is the description of a procedure yielding relatively simple sequences of asymptotically extremal graphs for the problem. In a continuation of this paper we shall investigate the problem where instead of alpha(G(n)) = o(n) we assume the stronger condition that the maximum size of a K(p)-free induced subgraph of G(n) is o(n)

A gráflimesz vizsgálata, alkalmazásai Hasonlóságok és különbségek a sűrű és ritka gráfok limesz-elméletében. ,,Sporadikus kérdések,'' pl. algebrai és geometriai alkalmazások. | Project leader: Miklós Simonovits Participants: Vera T. Sós , Endre Szemerédi, Zoltán Füredi, Ervin Győri, Gábor Elek. Balázs Patkós joined our group later. Here I have space only to mention the topics breafly. We were interested primarily in the connection, similarities and differences between deterministic and randomlike structures. Large part of our research was related to the Szemerédi Regularity Lemma and its various versions, and the applications of it, among others, in classical extremal graph and hypergraph problems. We also investigated the application of this lemma in quasi-randomness, property testing, and other related fields. We investigated the graph-limit theory, both for dense and veryy sparse graph sequences. Beside these, we investigated several ``Sporadic question,'' e.g. applications of our methods in algebra and geometry

A male kowari (Dasyuroides byrnei) originating from a zoo facility was delivered for post mortem evaluation in Hungary. Acute lobar pneumonia with histopathologic changes resembling an adenovirus (AdV) infection was detected by light microscopic examination. The presence of an AdV was confirmed by obtaining partial sequence data from the adenoviral DNA-dependent DNA-polymerase. Although the exact taxonomic position of this novel marsupial origin virus could not be determined, pairwise identity analyses and phylogenetic calculations revealed that it is distantly related to other members in the family Adenoviridae

Adenoviruses of the most ancient primate lineages support the theory on virus−host co-evolution

    Get PDF
The scarcity or complete lack of information on the adenoviruses (AdVs) occurring in the most ancient non-human primates resulted in the initiation of a study for exploring their abundance and diversity in prosimians and New World monkeys (NWMs). In order to assess the variability of these AdVs and the possible signs of the hypothesised virus−host co-evolution, samples from almost every family of NWMs and prosimians were screened for the presence of AdVs. A PCRscreening of 171 faecal or organ samples from live or dead, captive or wild-living prosimians and NWMs was performed. The PCR products from the gene of the IVa2 protein were sequenced and used in phylogeny calculations. The presence of 10 and 15 new AdVs in seven and ten different species of prosimians and NWMs was revealed, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the tentative novel AdVs cluster into two separate groups, which form the most basal branches among the primate AdVs, and therefore support the theory on the co-evolution of primate AdVs with their hosts. This is the first report that provides a comprehensive overview of the AdVs occurring in prosimians and NWMs, and the first insight into the evolutionary relationships among AdVs from all major primate groups

Mapping and DNA sequence characterisation of the Ry(sto) locus conferring extreme virus resistance to potato cultivar 'White Lady'

Virus resistance genes carried by wild plant species are valuable resources for plant breeding. The Ry(sto) gene, conferring a broad spectrum of durable resistance, originated from Solanum stoloniferum and was introgressed into several commercial potato cultivars, including 'White Lady', by classical breeding. Ry(sto) was mapped to chromosome XII in potato, and markers used for marker-assisted selection in breeding programmes were identified. Nevertheless, there was no information on the identity of the Ry(sto) gene. To begin to reveal the identification of Ry(sto), fine-scale genetic mapping was performed which, in combination with chromosome walking, narrowed down the locus of the gene to approximately 1 Mb. DNA sequence analysis of the locus identified six full-length NBS-LRR-type (short NLR-type) putative resistance genes. Two of them, designated TMV2 and TMV3, were similar to a TMV resistance gene isolated from tobacco and to Y-1, which co-segregates with Ry(adg), the extreme virus resistance gene originated from Solanum andigena and localised to chromosome XI. Furthermore, TMV2 of 'White Lady' was found to be 95% identical at the genomic sequence level with the recently isolated Ry(sto) gene of the potato cultivar 'Alicja'. In addition to the markers identified earlier, this work generated five tightly linked new markers which can serve potato breeding efforts for extreme virus resistance

Pulmonary Tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis in Captive Siberian Tiger

We report the first case of pulmonary tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis subsp. caprae in a captive Siberian tiger, an endangered feline. The pathogen was isolated from a tracheal aspirate obtained by bronchoscopy. This procedure provided a reliable in vivo diagnostic method in conjunction with conventional and molecular tests for the detection of mycobacteria
