Digital Competence and Literacy: Developing New Narrative Formats. The «Dragon Age: Origins» Videogame

The approach of this article is centered on the concepts of digital competence and new narrative formats. We aim to apply these dimensions to the videogame «Dragon Age Origins», winner of the 2009 videogame of the year award. Its features - plot, characters and interactivity – make it ideal reading material in other formats and are highly motivational for young people. The development of digital competence signifies new literacy, and it is necessary to find new stimulating resources that combine the fun and formative dimensions. Equally relevant are multimodal texts (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2001), especially new narrative formats that imply social progress, as the ways of reading are different. The texts have acquired new formats with the same quality as books but they sometimes motivate users more. This is the case of «Dragon Age Origins», a dark heroic fantasy role-playing game set in a unique world containing a story to be read and experienced. Our analysis of the videogame discusses whether it should be considered a form of reading or not

Asumir el reto de la convergencia entre la prensa, lo audiovisual, las telecomunicaciones e Internet a través de la tecnología digital está cambiando las condiciones de producción del periodismo actual y el papel del receptor, ya que las nuevas tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación potencian la interactividad y participación directa. En este contexto de cambio, por tanto, cabe preguntarse cómo se velará por el cumplimiento del artículo 20.1 a) y d) de la Constitución Española donde se alude al derecho a recibir y a comunicar información veraz, si se tiene en cuenta que la tendencia que parece imponerse en este nuevo panorama es la de crear grandes empresas sin periodistas.Assuming the challenge of the convergence between the press, the audiovisual field, telecommunications and the Internet through digital technology is changing the conditions of current journalistic production and the role of the receptor, since new information and communication technologies strengthen interaction and direct participation. In this context of change, it is therefore worth considering how to ensure compliance with Articles 20.1 a) y d) of the Spanish Constitution, alluding to the right to receive and transmit truthful information, when taking into account that the tendency that seems to be imposing itself in this new context is that of creating major companies without journalists

Las Músicas del 98 : (re)construyendo la identidad nacional /

Consultable des del TDXTítol obtingut de la portada digitalitzadaLa tesis doctoral «Las músicas del 98: (re)construyendo la identidad nacional» tiene como objeto de estudio analizar los discursos asociados a la música escénica que se elaboraron durante la recta final del siglo XIX en España. En esta época convulsa, en la que el sistema de la Restauración entra en crisis y los regionalismos evolucionan hacia los modernos nacionalismos, los discursos ligados a la identidad nacional tienen lugar desde las principales tribunas públicas del país (prensa escrita, universidad, discursos políticos, literatura,…) y, también, desde la escena musical. El método a seguir es la comparación de dos fenómenos fundamentales en el fin de siglo: por una parte, el éxito de la zarzuela en la época, que basa su trama en la contemporaneidad, haciendo referencia a los problemas sociales y legitimando el discurso de identidad nacional; por otra, el fenómeno del wagnerismo en Cataluña, que sirve para identificar la «nación» catalana con Europa, el Norte, el progreso, y así diferenciarla radicalmente de la decrépita España. Por supuesto estos fenómenos no son unívocos y permiten infinidad de lecturas, pero su interés radica en el metadiscurso creado a partir de ellos (ideas sobre la diferencia de razas, el progreso, los avances culturales, la grandeza de la nación,… discurso de ideología claramente conservadora), que los convierte en fenómenos originalísimos y de radical importancia a la hora de comprender determinados mitos y creencias asumidos en nuestra contemporaneidad como fundamentales, sin tener en cuenta su moderna creación.The main aim of the thesis «Music of 98: (re)building the National Identity» is to show the social and political discourses associated to the Lyric Drama at the end of the 19thC in Spain. The fin-de-siécle saw Spain going through a hard and difficult period: the loss of Cuba marked the end of a colonial cycle that begun in 1492. And not just that: the main consequence that the War of Cuba brought was a crisis in the national conscience. 1898 saw heated debates on the subject of Spain (on newspapers, University, and, also, Lyric Drama), bringing forward shouts of disagreement, especially from the Basque Country and Catalonia. The scope of this research is based on two phenomenon: the success of Zarzuela in the time (based on contemporary plots and building a national mythology) and, by other hand, the arrival of Wagnerism in Catalonia, phenomenon related to Catalonian nation-building (with a discourse based on the idea of Europe, North and progress) in front of Spain as a different (and worse) country. The methodology to apply is interdisciplinary, exploring the subtle connections between concepts from Science, Politics, Philosophy, Art, Literature, and Psychology to create a compelling intellectual study of a cultural construction that, even nowadays, is still alive: just understanding the past we can explain the configuration of the contemporary Spain

El cine y las potencias de lo engañoso. En torno a Die Marquise von O, de Éric Rohmer

En este artículo, reflexiono sobre la naturaleza de la imagen cinematográfica a partir del análisis de una de las películas de Éric Rohmer, Die Marquise von O, y los propios escritos teóricos del cineasta francés. Mi interpretación de la película se enmarca en una ejemplificación de lo que, para Rohmer, son las virtualidades artísticas y el valor estético del cine a partir del reconocimiento de su finalidad profunda: revelar la verdad y obtener conocimiento. Argumento que Die Marquise von O nos presenta, en negativo, una reflexión metacinemática, al establecer un contraste entre los medios propios del cine y los de otras artes, como la literatura, la pintura o el teatro. La trasposición desde la historia de la marquesa hasta la reflexión sobre el cine no es anecdótica: la verdad se desvelará a través del sometimiento a la indiferente objetividad de la cámara. Die Marquise von O trata de la propia condición del cine como revelación de la verdad.This paper provides some thoughts about the nature of the cinematic image taking as a starting point a film by Éric Rohmer, Die Marquise von O, and the critical and theoretical writings of the French director. I read the film as exemplifying what for Rohmer are the artistic potentialities and the aesthetic values of cinema; they are viewed as contributing to a deep aesthetic finality: to reveal the truth and obtain knowledge. I argue that Die Marquise von O offers a metacinematic reflection by drawing a contrast between the medium of cinema and other arts, such as literature, painting and theater. The transposition I propose from the story of the marquise to a reflection on the nature of cinema is not merely incidental, because in both cases truth will be revealed through the indifferent and objective registering of reality by the camera. Die Marquise von O talks about the condition of cinema as revelation of truth

Lexical cohesion and LSA coherence in schizophrenic patients with and without thought disorder

Disorganized speech is one of these abnormalities, and it may be studied by examining the semantic relationships between parts of the text. Two such approaches are lexical cohesion and LSA coherence. Previous studies have found apparently contradictory evidence, with lexical cohesion being increased in the discourse of patients with Formal Thought Disorder and LSA coherence being decreased. In this study, we tested the idea that these findings are not contradictory, and that one may find both these disturbances in the same sample of patients, with both explaining relevant clinical variables independently of each other. Results didn’t provide strong support for our hypotheses. We attempt to provide explanations for this failure to find the expected results. Methodological differences with previous literature, low subject number and lack of control of certain symptomatology variables may explain our null findings
