SN 2008fv: the third type Ia supernova in NGC 3147

Multiple outbursts of type Ia SNe in one galaxy present a unique opportunity to study the homogeneity of these objects. NGC 3147 is only the second known galaxy with three SNe Ia, another one is NGC 1316. We present CCD UBVRI photometry for SN Ia 2008fv and compare the light and color curves of this object with those for SNe Ia discovered earlier in NGC 3147: 1972H and 1997bq. The photometric properties of SNe 1997bq and 2008fv are nearly identical, while SN 1972H exhibits faster declining light curve.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Peremennye Zvezdy (Variable Stars

Campus Safety Data Gathering, Classification, and Ranking Based on Clery-Act Reports

    Get PDF
Most existing campus safety rankings are based on criminal incident history with minimal or no consideration of campus security conditions and standard safety measures. Campus safety information published by universities/colleges is usually conceptual/qualitative and not quantitative and are based-on criminal records of these campuses. Thus, no explicit and trusted ranking method for these campuses considers the level of compliance with the standard safety measures. A quantitative safety measure is important to compare different campuses easily and to learn about specific campus safety conditions. In this thesis, we utilize Clery-Act reports of campuses to automatically analyze their safety conditions and generate a safety rank based on these reports. We first provide a survey of campus safety and security measures. We utilize our survey results to provide an automated data-gathering method for capturing standard campus safety data from Clery-act reports. We then utilize the collected information to classify existing campuses based on their safety conditions. Our research model is also capable to predict the safety rank of campuses based on their Clery-Act report by comparing it to existing Clery-Act reports of other campuses and reported rank on public resources. Our research on this thesis uses a number of languages, tools, and technologies such as Python, shell scripts, text conversion, data mining, spreadsheets, and others. We provide a detailed description of our research work on this topic, explain our research methodology, and finally describe our findings and results. This research contributes to the automated campus safety data generation, classification, and ranking

Gastric sarcoidosis in children: A case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by the formation of noncaseating granulomas.  Gastrointestinal (GI) tract involvement in sarcoidosis is rare. Gastric sarcoidosis, particularly involving the antrum, affects approximately 10% of patients with systemic disease. GI sarcoidosis commonly occurs subclinically, with clinical manifestations present in only 0.1–0.9% of patients with the disease. This is a rare case report of a 8 year Saudi girl with symptomatic gastric sarcoidosis. The patient presented with anorexia, postprandial upper abdominal pain and fullness, and weight loss of 3 months duration. She was presented acutely after 6 months with attack of hematemesis. Endoscopic examination of upper gastrointestinal tract revealed bleeding nodular mucosal irregularities. Mucosal biopsies revealed noncaseating granulomatous inflammation involving the gastric mucosa confirming the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Corticosteroid therapy was started and the symptoms abated almost immediately. We also offer a review of the literature

Primary Mucinous Carcinoma of Cowper' gland: A Case Report of a Rare Variant

    Get PDF
Introduction: Primary carcinomas of the bulbourethral glands (Cowper’s glands) are extremely rare.Presentation of case: Herein, a 57-year-old man was presented by perineal mass for seven years. Physical examination revealed a nontender stony hard perineal mass without signs of inflammation. A urethrogram showed compression of the anterior part of the bulbous urethra. MRI of the mass revealed large perineal multilocular and marginal enhancement. The patient was managed by excision of the mass with safety margin. Histopathological examination of the mass showed remnants of malignant acini floating in pools of mucin which formed about 80% of tumor tissue Immunohistochemical analysis revealed positive reactions of the tumour cells with cytokeratin 20 but negative reactions for PSA, β-catenin and cytokeratin 7.Conclusion: We reported the first case of primary mucinous carcinoma arising in the Cowper’s glands and the 22nd in the literature of Cowper’s gland carcinoma

Structures and waves in a nonlinear heat-conducting medium

The paper is an overview of the main contributions of a Bulgarian team of researchers to the problem of finding the possible structures and waves in the open nonlinear heat conducting medium, described by a reaction-diffusion equation. Being posed and actively worked out by the Russian school of A. A. Samarskii and S.P. Kurdyumov since the seventies of the last century, this problem still contains open and challenging questions.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, the final publication will appear in Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics, Numerical Methods for PDEs: Theory, Algorithms and their Application

    Apophis planetary defense campaign

    Get PDF
We describe results of a planetary defense exercise conducted during the close approach to Earth by the near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis during 2020 December–2021 March. The planetary defense community has been conducting observational campaigns since 2017 to test the operational readiness of the global planetary defense capabilities. These community-led global exercises were carried out with the support of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office and the International Asteroid Warning Network. The Apophis campaign is the third in our series of planetary defense exercises. The goal of this campaign was to recover, track, and characterize Apophis as a potential impactor to exercise the planetary defense system including observations, hypothetical risk assessment and risk prediction, and hazard communication. Based on the campaign results, we present lessons learned about our ability to observe and model a potential impactor. Data products derived from astrometric observations were available for inclusion in our risk assessment model almost immediately, allowing real-time updates to the impact probability calculation and possible impact locations. An early NEOWISE diameter measurement provided a significant improvement in the uncertainty on the range of hypothetical impact outcomes. The availability of different characterization methods such as photometry, spectroscopy, and radar provided robustness to our ability to assess the potential impact risk
