Marianne's body politics in angela carter's heroes and villains

Body politics is seen as a mechanism that imposes male-dominated norms upon the female body which is thus expected to be regulated according to the expectations of societies. Throughout history, the female body has been seen as a commodity and the theoretical premise of body politics is created based on how the female body is categorised by patriarchy. According to patriarchal ideology, women’s bodies are considered to be meaningless and secondary substrata whose values are ignored. However, feminism scrutinises women’s bodies from a literary viewpoint and it conceptualises and also offers alternatives for recreating various women’s identities by analysing the females. In this respect, there is a different attitude toward the historical and hypothetical explications of female body politics in Angela Carter’s works, and especially in Heroes and Villains. Most of Carter’s female heroines abuse and provoke male bodies. Thus, these female characters reflect abused and distorted forms of male bodies. Therefore, in Heroes and Villains, the female body, regarded as the power of femininity, is used as a weapon against patriarchy. In addition to the expression of theoretical and critical views of Carter, this paper analyses Carter’s Heroes and Villains in terms of the protagonist’s (Marianne) conduct which is in contrast with the patriarchal view on body politics. In this study, the protagonist’s rejection of patriarchal norms by using her body as an apparatus for claiming power, and her body politics for ‘survival’ in the male-oriented world is also examined

Postmodern elements found in Douglas Adams?s The Hitchhiker?s Guide To The Galaxy is the main topic of this study. Thanks to its postmodern science fictional specialties, The Hitchhiker?s Guide To The Galaxy has been considered one of the favored best-seller books ever written. Even though the humorous narrative of the novel has the potential risk of impetuous categorization as science fiction as a genre, the novel moves closer to postmodernist science fictional text domain since the structural features of postmodernism are combined with the qualities and the elements of science fiction which establish a unification and integrity. Chapter one presents a general panorama of the elements and the categories of science fiction by providing background and historical information. Moreover, in this chapter, postmodernism is defined as a critical approach in this study and the relations between postmodern qualities and science fictional content are discussed. Chapter two contains the analysis of science fictional elements with postmodernist structural features as literary ways of expressions of parody, irony, satire and laughter. Chapter three deals with the occurrence of ideologies of cultural elements in the novel. Chapter four searches the case of an argumentation concerning the formation of alternative reality and its contribution to science fiction novel under postmodern features. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze postmodern characteristics in Douglas Adams?s The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy in terms of postmodern structural features, mainly parody, irony, satire and laughter and their correspondences with science fictional qualities. Another question that will also be raised in the study is that whether postmodern qualities including ontological features, structural features (parody and so on) and the issues of alternative reality have an influence upon the way the book was shaped and handled as postmodern science fiction novel. Key Words: Postmodernism, Parody, Ontological Features, Alternative Reality, Science Fiction, Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy

    No full text
One of the most challenging difficulties that precedes the frequency analysis of Kepler data for a Blazhko star is stitching together the data from different seasons (quarters). We discuss the preliminary steps in the stitching, detrending and rescaling process using the data for long-term Blazhko stars. We present the process on Kepler data of a Blazhko star with a variable Blazhko cycle and some first results of our analysis.status: publishe

MEFV gene 3'-UTR Alu repeat polymorphisms in patients with familial Mediterranean fever

Objective. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), an autosomal recessively inherited outoinflammatory disorder, is caused by missense mutations in the pyrin-encoding MEFV gene. The MEFV initiations can be detected in the majority of FMF patients. but there is an important proportion of patients with the FMF phenotype who carry a single or no coding region initiation. This study aimed to investigate the promoter region and 3'-UTR polymorphisms of the MEFV gene in a group of FMF patients with no coding region mutations. to identify variations with a possible role in the regulation of MEFV expression

Innovative Representations of Sexualities in Studies in English

This book comprises the papers presented by graduate students at the conference entitled “Innovative Representations of ‘Sexualities’ in Studies in English” organised by the Centre for British Literary and Cultural Studies, Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey, on 11 March 2015. These papers were not only reviewed by referees but were further revised extensively and edited by myself. The objective in the organisation of the first graduate conference held by the Centre and the publication of the papers presented at the conference was to provide graduate students with an academic platform to present their current research and discuss their ideas with their peers and professors. The papers published in the book deal with different aspects of sexuality in literature and non-literary media. The papers provide readings of sexuality, which is a complex and multidisciplinary topic, not just through poetry, fiction and drama but also as represented in feature films, animations and TV series because of the dominance of visual culture in today’s societies. Drawing on relevant theoretical material, mainly feminist and queer theories, these papers explore and question how sexuality is represented in a variety of mediums and how it functions. In addition, the ways in which sexuality is conceptualised and constructed is interrogated mostly with the intention of deconstructing essentialist notions of sexuality and identity formation. In this postmodernist era in which sexual and gender identities are no longer limited to two binary sexes, the papers invite the readers to reconsider their understanding of sexuality. Along with non-binary understandings of both sex (male, female, or intersex) and gender (man, woman, transgender, third gender and so forth) even non-human sexualities are taken into consideration. Furthermore, how sexualities are linked to hegemonic categories of identity, such as nationality, race, class and gender is discussed

Selected research in applied linguistics and English language teaching in Turkey: 2010–2016

In this state-of-the-art review, we aim to build on Alptekin & Tatar's (2011) article covering research conducted in Turkey between 2005 and 2009, and survey published research in 31 Turkey-based journals between 2010 and 2016. As the second review paper on Turkey's English language teaching (ELT) agenda, our goal is twofold: first, to introduce the research of those researchers whose high-quality, Turkey-based work may not be known outside Turkish academia; and second, to point to recent scholarly developments that have occurred in Turkey and set these in the context of recent shifts in language teaching research worldwide. This paper presents approximately 140 articles that appeared in locally published peer-reviewed academic journals, and clearly demonstrates that Turkey as an English as a foreign language (EFL) context presents a vibrant research scene in language teaching. The reviewed works cover a wide spectrum of timely topics (e.g., computer-assisted language learning (CALL), the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL), language assessment, affective factors), and present findings that have much to contribute to current discussions in the field. Nevertheless, our review also reveals some concerning trends, including an almost exclusive emphasis on practical concerns over conceptual development; shortcomings in locating research within broader disciplinary debates; and few efforts to bring together and build on local research in a manner that might allow for original and creative influences on the broader discipline. It is therefore the further aim of this article to spark debates on these issues among Turkish scholars and contribute to the strengthening of the local disciplinary community
