Relationship of sleep quality and health-related quality of life in adolescents according to self- and proxy ratings: a questionnaire survey

Front Psychiatry. 2012;3:76:76.Introduction: Sleep disturbances are common in adolescents and adversely affect performance, social contact, and susceptibility to stress. We investigated the hypothesis of a relationship between sleep and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and applied self- and proxy ratings. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 92 adolescents aged 11–17 years. All participants and their parents completed a HRQoL measure and the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC). Children with SDSC T-scores above the normal range (above 60) were classified as poor sleepers. Results: According to self- and proxy ratings, good sleepers reported significantly higher HRQoL than poor sleepers. Sleep disturbances were significantly higher and HRQoL significantly lower in self- as compared to parental ratings. Parent-child agreement was higher for subscales measuring observable aspects. Girls experienced significantly stronger sleep disturbances and lower self-rated HRQoL than boys. Discussion: Our findings support the positive relationship of sleep and HRQoL. Furthermore, parents significantly underestimate sleep disturbances and overestimate HRQoL in their children

Frequency modulation spectroscopy with a THz quantum-cascade laser

We report on a terahertz spectrometer for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy based on a quantum-cascade laser. High-frequency modulation (up to 50 MHz) of the laser driving current produces a simultaneous modulation of the frequency and amplitude of the laser output. The modulation generates sidebands, which are symmetrically positioned with respect to the laser carrier frequency. The molecular transition is probed by scanning the sidebands across it. In this way, the absorption and the dispersion caused by the molecular transition are measured. The signals are modeled by taking into account the simultaneous modulation of the frequency and amplitude of the laser emission. This allows for the determination of the strength of the frequency as well as amplitude modulation of the laser and of molecular parameters such as pressure broadening

Análisis criptopaleontológico del lapidario de Teofrastro (s. III a.C.)

La obra"Perì líthon" o"Tratado de Piedras" de Teofrasto, es considerado el texto más antiguo conservado sobre minerales y rocas, aunque haya llegado hasta nosotros incompleto. En este trabajo se analiza su contenido comparándolo con el de otros lapidarios antiguos y se concluye que once de las piedras que refiere y que vienen indicadas con nombres geográficos o crípticos son fósiles de plantas, vertebrados o químicos. Por eso, esta obra debe considerarse también como el tratado más antiguo que conocemos sobre paleontología, pues además de los fósiles que menciona, en ella se alude expresamente al proceso de fosilización.
