    Establishing an Emergency Medicine Education Research Network

    This project was developed from the research network track at the 2012 Academic Emergency Medicine consensus conference on education research in emergency medicine ( EM ). Using a combination of consensus techniques, the modified Delphi method, and qualitative research methods, the authors describe multiple aspects of developing, implementing, managing, and growing an EM education research network. A total of 175 conference attendees and 24 small‐group participants contributed to discussions regarding an education research network; participants were experts in research networks, education, and education research. This article summarizes relevant conference discussions and expert opinion for recommendations on the structure of an education research network, basic operational framework, site selection, leadership, subcommittees, guidelines for authorship, logistics, and measuring success while growing and maintaining the network.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/95595/1/acem12028.pd

    Proposed Standards for Medical Education Submissions to the Journal of General Internal Medicine

    To help authors design rigorous studies and prepare clear and informative manuscripts, improve the transparency of editorial decisions, and raise the bar on educational scholarship, the Deputy Editors of the Journal of General Internal Medicine articulate standards for medical education submissions to the Journal. General standards include: (1) quality questions, (2) quality methods to match the questions, (3) insightful interpretation of findings, (4) transparent, unbiased reporting, and (5) attention to human subjects’ protection and ethical research conduct. Additional standards for specific study types are described. We hope these proposed standards will generate discussion that will foster their continued evolution

    Therapeutic strategies to slow chronic kidney disease progression

    Childhood chronic kidney disease commonly progresses toward end-stage renal failure, largely independent of the underlying disorder, once a critical impairment of renal function has occurred. Hypertension and proteinuria are the most important independent risk factors for renal disease progression. Therefore, current therapeutic strategies to prevent progression aim at controlling blood pressure and reducing urinary protein excretion. Renin-angiotensin-system (RAS) antagonists preserve kidney function not only by lowering blood pressure but also by their antiproteinuric, antifibrotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Intensified blood pressure control, probably aiming for a target blood pressure below the 75th percentile, may exert additional renoprotective effects. Other factors contributing in a multifactorial manner to renal disease progression include dyslipidemia, anemia, and disorders of mineral metabolism. Measures to preserve renal function should therefore also comprise the maintenance of hemoglobin, serum lipid, and calcium-phosphorus ion product levels in the normal range

    Effect of an Internet-based Curriculum on Postgraduate Education: A Multicenter Intervention

    We hypothesized that the Internet could be used to disseminate and evaluate a curriculum in ambulatory care, and that internal medicine residency program directors would value features made possible by online dissemination. An Internet-based ambulatory care curriculum was developed and marketed to internal medicine residency program directors. Utilization and knowledge outcomes were tracked by the website; opinions of program directors were measured by paper surveys. Twenty-four programs enrolled with the online curriculum. The curriculum was rated favorably by all programs, test scores on curricular content improved significantly, and program directors rated highly features made possible by an Internet-based curriculum
