    Los ordenadores-tablet están acaparando toda la atención en estos momentos y forman parte de nuestra vida cotidiana. Por ello, no es de extrañar que en el ámbito educativo se hayan arbitrado fórmulas para incorporarlos en las aulas. La presente investigación pretende mostrar las estrategias llevadas a cabo en determinadas experiencias con iPads en escuelas primarias austriacas. Por un lado, se describe el desarrollo de las aplicaciones (apps) educativas apropiadas para su empleo en aulas. Y por otro, cada lección apoyada en las tecnologías es analizada y evaluada desde una perspectiva técnica. Las aportaciones más representativas de la investigación evidencian las diversas fórmulas de utilización de este tipo de ordenadores para promover una influencia positiva en la enseñanza, también se apuntan recomendaciones prácticas sobre cómo deberían ser usados en aulasTablet computers gain enormous attention nowadays and become more and more part of our daily life.     Characterizations of non-normalized discrete probability distributions and their application in statistics

    From the distributional characterizations that lie at the heart of Stein’s method we derive explicit formulae for the mass functions of discrete probability laws that identify those distributions. These identities are applied to develop tools for the solution of statistical problems. Our characterizations, and hence the applications built on them, do not require any knowledge about normalization constants of the probability laws. To demonstrate that our statistical methods are sound, we provide comparative simulation studies for the testing of fit to the Poisson distribution and for parameter estimation of the negative binomial family when both parameters are unknown. We also consider the problem of parameter estimation for discrete exponential-polynomial models which generally are non-normalized

    A Unifying Splitting Framework

    International audienceAVATAR is an elegant and effective way to split clauses in a saturation prover using a SAT solver. But is it refutationally complete? And how does it relate to other splitting architectures? To answer these questions, we present a unifying framework that extends a saturation calculus (e.g., superposition) with splitting and embeds the result in a prover guided by a SAT solver. The framework also allows us to study locking, a subsumption-like mechanism based on the current propositional model. Various architectures are instances of the framework, including AVATAR, labeled splitting, and SMT with quantifiers

In particular, it treats the problem of isotropic, orthotopic, and stiffened rectangular plates, thin curved panels, and circular cylinders under various loading conditions. The purpose of appending the pertinent literature references following the subjects discussed was to facilitate a comprehensive study of the treated problems

    Logistic or not Logistic?

    We propose a new class of goodness-of-fit tests for the logistic distribution based on a characterization related to the density approach in the context of Stein\u27s method. This characterization-based test is a first of its kind for the logistic distribution. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic is derived and it is shown that the test is consistent against fixed alternatives. The finite sample power performance of the newly proposed class of tests is compared to various existing tests by means of a Monte Carlo study. It is found that this new class of tests are especially powerful when the alternative distributions are heavy tailed, like Student\u27s t and Cauchy, or for skew alternatives such as the log-normal, gamma and chi-square distributions

    Novelty Search in Competitive Coevolution

    One of the main motivations for the use of competitive coevolution systems is their ability to capitalise on arms races between competing species to evolve increasingly sophisticated solutions. Such arms races can, however, be hard to sustain, and it has been shown that the competing species often converge prematurely to certain classes of behaviours. In this paper, we investigate if and how novelty search, an evolutionary technique driven by behavioural novelty, can overcome convergence in coevolution. We propose three methods for applying novelty search to coevolutionary systems with two species: (i) score both populations according to behavioural novelty; (ii) score one population according to novelty, and the other according to fitness; and (iii) score both populations with a combination of novelty and fitness. We evaluate the methods in a predator-prey pursuit task. Our results show that novelty-based approaches can evolve a significantly more diverse set of solutions, when compared to traditional fitness-based coevolution.Comment: To appear in 13th International Conference on Parallel Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN 2014

    Forward-Backward Splitting in Deformable Image Registration: A Demons Approach

    Efficient non-linear image registration implementations are key for many biomedical imaging applications. By using the classical demons approach, the associated optimization problem is solved by an alternate optimization scheme consisting of a gradient descent step followed by Gaussian smoothing. Despite being simple and powerful, the solution of the underlying relaxed formulation is not guaranteed to minimize the original global energy. Implicitly, however, this second step can be recast as the proximal map of the regularizer. This interpretation introduces a parallel to the more general Forward-Backward Splitting (FBS) scheme consisting of a forward gradient descent and proximal step. By shifting entirely to FBS, we can take advantage of the recent advances in FBS methods and solve the original, non-relaxed deformable registration problem for any type of differentiable similarity measure and convex regularization associated with a tractable proximal operator. Additionally, global convergence to a critical point is guaranteed under weak restrictions. For the first time in the context of image registration, we show that Tikhonov regularization breaks down to the simple use of B-Spline filtering in the proximal step. We demonstrate the versatility of FBS by encoding spatial transformation as displacement fields or free-form B-Spline deformations. We use state-of-the-art FBS solvers and compare their performance against the classical demons, the recently proposed inertial demons and the conjugate gradient optimizer. Numerical experiments performed on both synthetic and clinical data show the advantage of FBS in image registration in terms of both convergence and accuracy
