Kartlegging av et tønnedeponi i sjøen utenfor Aspond, Indre Oslofjord 1996. Utbredelse, tilstand og miljøgifter
Totalt 0.65 km² av sjøbunnen vest for Aspond ble undersøkt mht. forekomst av og tilstand til deponerte tønner. Kartleggingen omfattet bruk av miniubåt, video, dykking og miljøgiftanalyser av tønneinnhold og sedimenter. Hoveddeponiet antas å dekke et areal på 0,1 km² med flest tønner på 15-25 m vanndyp. Det ble også registrert forholdsvis mange tønner på grunt vann, samt enkelte spredt i dypere deler av området. Totalt anslag ca. 6000 tønner og Jerry-kanner. Tønnenes tilstand var svært dårlig og sjøbunnen innenfor deponiet bar preg av fragmenter fra det opprinnelige tønnematerialet. Innholdet i et mindre antall utvalgte tønner viste seg å inneholde markert til kraftig forhøyede konsentrasjoner av ulike metaller og olje-/tjærerester. Det ble også registrert overkonsentrasjoner av PCB og spor av andre persistente klororganiske forbindelser. Samlet indikerte målingene i sedimentene en forholdsvis dårlig sedimenttilstand lokalt i deponiet, men at spredningen av miljøgifter til omgivelsene for øvrig har vært svært begrenset
Comment on "A centroid molecular dynamics study of liquid para hydrogen and ortho deuterium" [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 6412 (2004)]
We show that the two phase points considered in the recent simulations of liquid para hydrogen by Hone and Voth lie in the liquid-vapor coexistence region of a purely classical molecular dynamics simulation. By contrast, their phase point for ortho deuterium was in the one-phase liquid region for both classical and quantum simulations. These observations are used to account for their report that quantum mechanical effects enhance the diffusion in liquid para hydrogen and decrease it in ortho deuterium
Fluid-fluid demixing transitions in colloid--polyelectrolyte star mixtures
We derive effective interaction potentials between hard, spherical colloidal
particles and star-branched polyelectrolytes of various functionalities and
smaller size than the colloids. The effective interactions are based on a
Derjaguin-like approximation, which is based on previously derived potentials
acting between polyelectrolyte stars and planar walls. On the basis of these
interactions we subsequently calculate the demixing binodals of the binary
colloid--polyelectrolyte star mixture, employing standard tools from
liquid-state theory. We find that the mixture is indeed unstable at moderately
high overall concentrations. The system becomes more unstable with respect to

Decrement Operators in Belief Change
While research on iterated revision is predominant in the field of iterated
belief change, the class of iterated contraction operators received more
attention in recent years. In this article, we examine a non-prioritized
generalisation of iterated contraction. In particular, the class of weak
decrement operators is introduced, which are operators that by multiple steps
achieve the same as a contraction. Inspired by Darwiche and Pearl's work on
iterated revision the subclass of decrement operators is defined. For both,
decrement and weak decrement operators, postulates are presented and for each
of them a representation theorem in the framework of total preorders is given.

Silencing Mist1 gene expression is essential for recovery from acute pancreatitis
Acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas are tasked with synthesizing, packaging and secreting vast quantities of pro-digestive enzymes to maintain proper metabolic homeostasis for the organism. Because the synthesis of high levels of hydrolases is potentially dangerous, the pancreas is prone to acute pancreatitis (AP), a disease that targets acinar cells, leading to acinar-ductal metaplasia (ADM), inflammation and fibrosis-events that can transition into the earliest stages of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Despite a wealth of information concerning the broad phenotype associated with pancreatitis, little is understood regarding specific transcriptional regulatory networks that are susceptible to AP and the role these networks play in acinar cell and exocrine pancreas responses. In this study, we examined the importance of the acinar-specific maturation transcription factor MIST1 to AP damage and organ recovery. Analysis of wild-type and Mist1 conditional null mice revealed that Mist1 gene transcription and protein accumulation were dramatically reduced as acinar cells underwent ADM alterations during AP episodes. To test if loss of MIST1 function was primarily responsible for the damaged status of the organ, mice harboring a Cre-inducible Mist1 transgene (iMist1) were utilized to determine if sustained MIST1 activity could alleviate AP damage responses. Unexpectedly, constitutive iMist1 expression during AP led to a dramatic increase in organ damage followed by acinar cell death. We conclude that the transient silencing of Mist1 expression is critical for acinar cells to survive an AP episode, providing cells an opportunity to suppress their secretory function and regenerate damaged cells. The importance of MIST1 to these events suggests that modulating key pancreas transcription networks could ease clinical symptoms in patients diagnosed with pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. © 2015 Karki et al. High speed electric motors based on high performance novel soft magnets
Novel Co-based soft magnetic materials are presented as a potential substitute for electrical steels in high speed motors for current industry applications. The low losses, high permeabilities, and good mechanical strength of these materials enable application in high rotational speed induction machines. Here, we present a finite element analysis of Parallel Path Magnetic Technology rotating motors constructed with both silicon steel and Co-based nanocomposite. Prediction of Functional Sites Based on the Fuzzy Oil Drop Model
A description of many biological processes requires knowledge of the 3-D structure of proteins and, in particular, the defined active site responsible for biological function. Many proteins, the genes of which have been identified as the result of human genome sequencing, and which were synthesized experimentally, await identification of their biological activity. Currently used methods do not always yield satisfactory results, and new algorithms need to be developed to recognize the localization of active sites in proteins. This paper describes a computational model that can be used to identify potential areas that are able to interact with other molecules (ligands, substrates, inhibitors, etc.). The model for active site recognition is based on the analysis of hydrophobicity distribution in protein molecules. It is shown, based on the analyses of proteins with known biological activity and of proteins of unknown function, that the region of significantly irregular hydrophobicity distribution in proteins appears to be function related
A Default Logic Patch for Default Logic
International audienceThis paper is about the fusion of multiple information sources represented using default logic. More precisely, the focus is on solving the problem that occurs when the standard-logic knowledge parts of the sources are contradictory, as default theories trivialize in this case. To overcome this problem, it is shown that replacing each formula belonging to Minimally Unsatisfiable Subformulas by a corresponding supernormal default allows appealing features. Moreover, it is investigated how these additional defaults interact with the initial defaults of the theory. Interestingly, this approach allows us to handle the problem of default theories containing inconsistent standard-logic knowledge, using the default logic framework itself
Plectin 1f scaffolding at the sarcolemma of dystrophic (mdx) muscle fibers through multiple interactions with β-dystroglycan
In skeletal muscle, the cytolinker plectin is prominently expressed at Z-disks and the sarcolemma. Alternative splicing of plectin transcripts gives rise to more than eight protein isoforms differing only in small N-terminal sequences (5–180 residues), four of which (plectins 1, 1b, 1d, and 1f) are found at substantial levels in muscle tissue. Using plectin isoform–specific antibodies and isoform expression constructs, we show the differential regulation of plectin isoforms during myotube differentiation and their localization to different compartments of muscle fibers, identifying plectins 1 and 1f as sarcolemma-associated isoforms, whereas plectin 1d localizes exclusively to Z-disks. Coimmunoprecipitation and in vitro binding assays using recombinant protein fragments revealed the direct binding of plectin to dystrophin (utrophin) and β-dystroglycan, the key components of the dystrophin–glycoprotein complex. We propose a model in which plectin acts as a universal mediator of desmin intermediate filament anchorage at the sarcolemma and Z-disks. It also explains the plectin phenotype observed in dystrophic skeletal muscle of mdx mice and Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients
