Femtosecond Laser Induced Structural Dynamics and Melting of Cu (111) Single Crystal. An Ultrafast Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction Study
Femtosecond, 8.04 keV x-ray pulses are used to probe the lattice dynamics of a 150 nm Cu (111) single crystal on a mica substrate irradiated with 400 nm, 100 fs laser pulses. For pump fluences below the damage and melting thresholds, we observed lattice contraction due to the formation of a blast force and coherent acoustic phonons with a period of ∼69 ps. At larger pump fluence, solid to liquid phase transition, annealing, and recrystallization were measured in real time by monitoring the intensity evolution of the probing fs x-ray rocking curves, which agreed well with theoretical simulation results. The experimental data suggest that the melting process is a purely thermal phase transition. This study provides, in real time, an ultrafast time-resolved detailed description of the significant processes that occur as a result of the interaction of a femtosecond light-pulse with the Cu (111) crystal surface. Axial behavior of reinforced concrete short columns strengthened with wire rope and T-shaped steel plate units.
yesThis paper presents a relatively simple column strengthening procedure using unbonded wire rope and T-shaped steel plate units. Twelve strengthened columns and an unstrengthened control column were tested to failure under concentric axial load to explore the significance and shortcomings of the proposed strengthening technique. The main variables investigated were the volume ratio of wire ropes as well as geometrical size and configuration of T-shaped steel plates. Axial load capacity and ductility ratio of columns tested were compared with predictions obtained from the equation specified in ACI 318-05 and models developed for conventionally tied columns, respectively. The measured axial load capacities of all strengthened columns were higher than predictions obtained from ACI 318-05, indicating that the ratio of the measured and predicted values increased with the increase of volume ratio of wire ropes and flange width of T-shaped steel plates. In addition, at the same lateral reinforcement index, a much higher ductility ratio was exhibited by strengthened columns having a volume ratio of wire ropes above 0·0039 than tied columns. The ductility ratio of strengthened columns tested increased with the increase of flange width, thickness, and web height of T-shaped steel plates. A mathematical model for the prediction of stress–strain characteristics of confined concrete using the proposed strengthening technique is developed, that was in good agreement with test results

Application of Plasticity Theory to Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams
yesThis paper reviews the application of the plasticity theory to reinforced concrete deep beams. Both the truss analogy and mechanism approach were employed to predict the capacity of reinforced concrete deep beams. In addition, most current codes of practice, for example Eurocode 1992 and ACI 318-05, recommend the strut-and-tie model for designing reinforced concrete deep beams.
Compared with methods based on empirical or semi-empirical equations, the strut-and-tie model and mechanism analyses are more rational, adequately accurate and sufficiently simple for estimating the load capacity of reinforced concrete deep beams. However, there is a problem of selecting the effectiveness factor of concrete as reflected in the wide range of values reported in the literature for deep beams
Effect of Horizontal DNA Transfer in Azospirillum and Azotobacter Strains on Biological and Biochemical Traits of Non-legume Plants
Abstract: Auxin production by Azospirillum and Azotobacter is believed to play a major role on promoting plant growth. Non legume plants inoculated with different genetically modified strains is significantly stimulated due to the contribution of Auxin biosynthesis by Azospirillum transconjugants affecting on root fresh weight of sugar beet above the plants fertilized with 50% of recommended dose. This study focuses the association between 2,4-D and Azospirillum which revealed significant increase in leaf area of top variety at the presence of 2,4-D above the plants fertilized with nitrogen recommended dose. At the absence of 2,4-D some of transconjugants significantly stimulate the leaf area of top variety above the plants fertilized with 50% of nitrogen recommended dose. The importance of horizontal gene transfer is an adaptive mechanism for bacteria, which may result in increased genetic variation by bringing together DNA from different genetic backgrounds. Furthermore, Azospirillum transconjugants (extra copy of DNA) were evaluated in field trail. Together, these results confirm the important role of IAA produced by transconjugants on stimulating root weight and illustrate the power of combining genetic tools and bioassays to elucidate the mechanism of a beneficial Azospirillum -plant interaction. The effects of biofertilizing by Azospirillum transconjugants on the technological parameters of sugar beet were studied. The better results were gained at variety Top (sugar %, potassium, sodium, quality) at the absence of 2,4-D under the effect of biofertilization, but variety dispery obtained better results of alphaamino-nitrogen under the effect of nitrogen recommended dose. When plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria (Azotobacter strains) were used as inoculants for biofertilization and phytostimulation of canola, some of the inoculants improving growth and yield parametres; leaf area, plant height, root dry weight and grain yield/plant above the plants fertilized with 50% of nitrogen recommended dose. In addition, chlorophyll b and grain yield/plant in Serw 6 variety was significantly affected by the addition of 2,4-D. Corn plants biofertilized with Azospirillum strains and their transconjugants appeared significant effect on ear length, plant height, grain content of carotene and leave content of cholorophyll pigments. This work describes the beneficial effect of genetic variations in rhizobacterium strains, which contains an active biological containment system affecting on their effectiveness of nitrogen fixation and auxin production. This leading to recommend to inoculate non -legume plants with selected rhizobacterial isolates to exhibit stimulatory effect on grain yield and root fresh weight (sugar beet). However, plantresponse was varied, due to plant varieties and genetic constitution of rhizobacterial strains as shown in this study. Field experiments conducted in this study on two varieties of sugar beet, canola and corn demonstrated an increase in root fresh and/or dry weight, shoot dry weight and grain yield of inoculated seedlings, above that in the plants fertilized with 50% of nitrogen recommended dose. Colonization of the non-legume plants by rhizobacteria have indirect and direct effects on plant growth and their developments. Direct effects include enhanced provision of nutrients and the production of phytohormones. Indirect effects involve aspects of biological control: the production of antibiotics and the induction of plant resistance mechanisms. It was concluded that the highest auxins-producing strains also caused a maximum increase of growth and yield of non-legume plants
Integrating computational methods guided the discovery of phytochemicals as potential Pin1 inhibitors for cancer: pharmacophore modeling, molecular docking, MM-GBSA calculations and molecular dynamics studies
Pin1 is a pivotal player in interactions with a diverse array of phosphorylated proteins closely linked to critical processes such as carcinogenesis and tumor suppression. Its axial role in cancer initiation and progression, coupled with its overexpression and activation in various cancers render it a potential candidate for the development of targeted therapeutics. While several known Pin1 inhibitors possess favorable enzymatic profiles, their cellular efficacy often falls short. Consequently, the pursuit of novel Pin1 inhibitors has gained considerable attention in the field of medicinal chemistry. In this study, we employed the Phase tool from Schrödinger to construct a structure-based pharmacophore model. Subsequently, 449,008 natural products (NPs) from the SN3 database underwent screening to identify compounds sharing pharmacophoric features with the native ligand. This resulted in 650 compounds, which then underwent molecular docking and binding free energy calculations. Among them, SN0021307, SN0449787 and SN0079231 showed better docking scores with values of −9.891, −7.579 and −7.097 kcal/mol, respectively than the reference compound (−6.064 kcal/mol). Also, SN0021307, SN0449787 and SN0079231 exhibited lower free binding energies (−57.12, −49.81 and −46.05 kcal/mol, respectively) than the reference ligand (−37.75 kcal/mol). Based on these studies, SN0021307, SN0449787, and SN0079231 showed better binding affinity that the reference compound. Further the validation of these findings, molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the stability of the ligand-receptor complex for 100 ns with RMSD ranging from 0.6 to 1.8 Å. Based on these promising results, these three phytochemicals emerge as promising lead compounds warranting comprehensive biological screening in future investigations. These compounds hold great potential for further exploration regarding their efficacy and safety as Pin1 inhibitors, which could usher in new avenues for combating cancer
Neural network modelling of RC deep beam shear strength
YesA 9 x 18 x 1 feed-forward neural network (NN) model
trained using a resilient back-propagation algorithm and
early stopping technique is constructed to predict the
shear strength of deep reinforced concrete beams. The
input layer covering geometrical and material properties
of deep beams has nine neurons, and the corresponding output is the shear strength. Training, validation and testing of the developed neural network have been
achieved using a comprehensive database compiled from
362 simple and 71 continuous deep beam specimens.
The shear strength predictions of deep beams obtained
from the developed NN are in better agreement with
test results than those determined from strut-and-tie
models. The mean and standard deviation of the ratio between predicted capacities using the NN and measured shear capacities are 1.028 and 0.154, respectively, for simple deep beams, and 1.0 and 0.122, respectively, for continuous deep beams. In addition, the
trends ascertained from parametric study using the developed NN have a consistent agreement with those observed in other experimental and analytical investigations
Zettawatt-Exawatt Lasers and Their Applications in Ultrastrong-Field Physics: High Energy Front
Since its birth, the laser has been extraordinarily effective in the study
and applications of laser-matter interaction at the atomic and molecular level
and in the nonlinear optics of the bound electron. In its early life, the laser
was associated with the physics of electron volts and of the chemical bond.
Over the past fifteen years, however, we have seen a surge in our ability to
produce high intensities, five to six orders of magnitude higher than was
possible before. At these intensities, particles, electrons and protons,
acquire kinetic energy in the mega-electron-volt range through interaction with
intense laser fields. This opens a new age for the laser, the age of nonlinear
relativistic optics coupling even with nuclear physics. We suggest a path to
reach an extremely high-intensity level W/cm in the coming
decade, much beyond the current and near future intensity regime W/cm, taking advantage of the megajoule laser facilities. Such a laser at
extreme high intensity could accelerate particles to frontiers of high energy,
tera-electron-volt and peta-electron-volt, and would become a tool of
fundamental physics encompassing particle physics, gravitational physics,
nonlinear field theory, ultrahigh-pressure physics, astrophysics, and
cosmology. We focus our attention on high-energy applications in particular and
the possibility of merged reinforcement of high-energy physics and ultraintense
laser.Comment: 25 pages. 1 figur
Continuous wavelet transform methods for the simultaneous determinations and dissolution profiles of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide in tablets
ABSTRACT Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) was proposed for the simultaneous determination and dissolution profiles of valsartan (VAL) and hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) in tablets, without the use of a chemical separation procedure. The CWT approach was applied to the original UV spectra and their ratio spectra in the optimal wavelength ranges. After testing several wavelet families, Mexican hat function-CWT and Daubechies7-CWT (mexh-CWT and db7-CWT, respectively) were found to be suitable for the transformation of the original UV spectra. In the following procedure, mexh-CWT and Coiflets3-CWT (coif3-CWT) were found to be appropriate for the signal analysis of ratio spectra (RS) of VAL/HCT and HCT/VAL. Calibration graphs for VAL and HCT were obtained by measuring db7-CWT and mexh-CWT amplitudes in the transformation of the original absorption spectra and RS-coif-CWT and RS-mexh-CWT amplitudes in the transformation of the ratio spectra. The validity and applicability of the proposed CWT methods were evaluated through the analysis of an independent set of synthetic binary mixtures consisting of VAL and HCT. The proposed signal processing methods were then successfully applied to the simultaneous quantitative evaluation and simultaneous dissolution profiles of the related drugs in commercial tablets, with good agreement reported for the experimental results
Shear Capacity of Monolithic Concrete Joints without Transverse Reinforcement.
yesA mechanism analysis based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity for monolithic concrete joints without transverse reinforcement is presented. Concrete is modelled as a rigid–perfectly plastic material obeying modified Coulomb failure criteria. Existing stress–strain relationships of concrete in compression and tension are comprehensively modified using the crack band theory to allow for concrete type and maximum aggregate size. Simple equations for the effectiveness factor for compression, ratio of effective tensile strength to compressive strength and angle of concrete friction are then mathematically developed using the modified stress–strain relationships of concrete. In addition, 12 push-off specimens made of all-lightweight, sand–lightweight and normal-weight concrete having maximum aggregate size between 4 and 19 mm were physically tested. Test results and mechanism analysis clearly showed that the shear capacity of monolithic concrete joints increased with the increase of the maximum aggregate size and dry density of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the ratio between experimentally measured and predicted (by the mechanism analysis shear capacities) are 1·01 and 0·16 respectively, showing a closer prediction and less variation than Vecchio and Collins' equation, regardless of concrete type and maximum aggregate size
