    Vibronic interactions in the visible and near-infrared spectra of C60− anions

    Electron-phonon coupling is an important factor in understanding many properties of the C60 fullerides. However, there has been little success in quantifying the strength of the vibronic coupling in C60 ions, with considerable disagreement between experimental and theoretical results. We will show that neglect of quadratic coupling in previous models for C60- ions results in a significant overestimate of the linear coupling constants. Including quadratic coupling allows a coherent interpretation to be made of earlier experimental and theoretical results which at first sight are incompatible

    “I'm Worth More than That”: Trait Positivity Predicts Increased Rejection of Unfair Financial Offers

    Humans react strongly to unfairness, sometimes rejecting inequitable proposals even if this sacrifices personal financial gain. Here we explored whether emotional dispositions - trait tendencies to experience positive or negative feelings – shape the rejection of unfair financial offers. Participants played an Ultimatum Game, where the division of a sum of money is proposed and the player can accept or reject this offer. Individuals high in trait positivity and low in trait negativity rejected more unfair offers. These relationships could not be explained by existing accounts which argue that rejection behaviour results from a failure to regulate negative emotions, or serves to arbitrate social relationships and identity. Instead, the relationship between dispositional affect and rejection behaviour may be underpinned by perceived self worth, with those of a positive disposition believing that they are “worth more than that” and those of a negative disposition resigning themselves to “taking the crumbs from under the table”

    Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder medication and seizures

    OBJECTIVE: Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of seizures, but there is uncertainty about whether ADHD medication treatment increases risk among patients with and without preexisting seizures. METHODS: We followed a sample of 801,838 patients with ADHD who had prescribed drug claims from the Truven Health MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters databases to examine whether ADHD medication increases the likelihood of seizures among ADHD patients with and without a history of seizures. First, we assessed overall risk of seizures among patients with ADHD. Second, within-individual concurrent analyses assessed odds of seizure events during months when a patient with ADHD received ADHD medication compared with when the same individual did not, while adjusting for antiepileptic medications. Third, within-individual long-term analyses examined odds of seizure events in relation to the duration of months over the previous 2 years patients received medication. RESULTS: Patients with ADHD were at higher odds for any seizure compared with non-ADHD controls (odds ratio [OR] = 2.33, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.24-2.42 males; OR = 2.31, 95% CI = 2.22-2.42 females). In adjusted within-individual comparisons, ADHD medication was associated with lower odds of seizures among patients with (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.60-0.85) and without (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.62-0.82) prior seizures. Long-term within-individual comparisons suggested no evidence of an association between medication use and seizures among individuals with (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.59-1.30) and without (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.80-1.28) a seizure history. CONCLUSIONS: Results reaffirm that patients with ADHD are at higher risk of seizures. However, ADHD medication was associated with lower risk of seizures within individuals while they were dispensed medication, which is not consistent with the hypothesis that ADHD medication increases risk of seizures

    Systematic study of X-ray Cavities in the brightest galaxy of the Draco Constellation NGC 6338

    We present results based on the systematic analysis of currently available Chandra archive data on the brightest galaxy in the Draco constellation NGC 6338, in order to investigate the properties of the X-ray cavities. In the central ~6 kpc, at least a two and possibly three, X-ray cavities are evident. All these cavities are roughly of ellipsoidal shapes and show a decrement in the surface brightness of several tens of percent. In addition to these cavities, a set of X-ray bright filaments are also noticed which are spatially coincident with the H{\alpha} filaments over an extent of 15 kpc. The H{\alpha} emission line filaments are perpendicular to the X- ray cavities. Spectroscopic analysis of the hot gas in the filaments and cavities reveal that the X-ray filaments are cooler than the gas contained in the cavities. The emission line ratios and the extended, asymmetric nature of the H{\alpha} emission line filaments seen in this system require a harder ionizing source than that produced by star formation and/or young, massive stars. Radio emission maps derived from the analysis of 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST survey data failed to show any association of these X-ray cavities with radio jets, however, the cavities are filled by radio emission. The total power of the cavities is 17\times 1042 erg s-1 and the ratio of the radio luminosity to cavity power is ~ 10-4, implying that most of the jet power is mechanical.Comment: The paper contains 12 figures and 3 tables, Accepted 2011 December 7 for publication in MNRA

    Water Rights Analysis Package (WRAP) Model Description and User's Manual

    The evolution of the Water Rights Analysis Package (WRAP) is outlined in the "Model Development Background" section of Chapter 1 of this report. The model was developed in conjunction with a series of university research projects sponsored by the Texas Water Resources Institute, U.S. Geological Survey, Brazos River Authority, Texas Advanced Technology Program, Texas Water Development Board, and Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission. W. Brian Walls, David D. Dunn, Anil R. Yerramreddy, and Gerardo Sanchez-Torres addressed various aspects of model develop- ment and application in their thesis and dissertation research as graduate students in the Civil Engineering Department at Texas A&M University. The revised October 1996 as well as the original March 1993 editions of this report document a modeling package consisting of three computer programs called WRAP2, WRAP3, and TABLES. The October 1996 edition of the software and documentation reflect the following revisions to the March 1993 version. * A watershed flow option has been added to WRAP2 and WRAP3 to supplement the control point approach for defining the location of system components and inputting naturalized streamflows. Flows at water right locations are computed as a function of the flows at control points provided as input. A flexible methodology is incorporated in the model that allows streamflows at water rights sites to be expressed as a function of control point flows optionally using information ranging from simple drainage area ratios to more complex relationships. * Dimension limits were changed to increase the maximum number of control points from 50 to 200. The maximum number of water rights and reservoirs was decreased from 2,000 to 1,700. The new watershed flow option allows up to 200 water rights sites in addition to the control point locations. Any of the dimension limits can be easily changed in the future as needed for particular applications. * Minor revisions to program TABLES include adding means in most of the tables and refining several headings. * Numerous minor refinements were made throughout this report to update or clarify the presen- tation. * "Appendix G: Guidelines for Developing WRAP Input" is a new addition to the report

    A functional bacteria-derived restriction modification system in the mitochondrion of a heterotrophic protist

    The overarching trend in mitochondrial genome evolution is functional streamlining coupled with gene loss; therefore, gene acquisition by mitochondria is considered to be exceedingly rare. Selfish elements in the form of self-splicing introns occur in many organellar genomes, but the wider diversity of selfish elements, and how they persist in the DNA of organelles, has not been explored. In the mitochondrial genome of a marine heterotrophic katablepharid protist, we identify a functional type II restriction modification (RM) system originating from a horizontal gene transfer (HGT) event involving bacteria related to flavobacteria. This RM system consists of an HpaII-like endonuclease and a cognate cytosine methyltransferase (CM). We demonstrate that these proteins are functional by heterologous expression in both bacterial and eukaryotic cells. These results suggest that a mitochondrial-encoded RM system can function as a toxin-antitoxin selfish element and that such elements could be co-opted by eukaryotic genomes to drive biased organellar inheritance.Peer reviewe

    Classical BI: Its Semantics and Proof Theory

    We present Classical BI (CBI), a new addition to the family of bunched logics which originates in O'Hearn and Pym's logic of bunched implications BI. CBI differs from existing bunched logics in that its multiplicative connectives behave classically rather than intuitionistically (including in particular a multiplicative version of classical negation). At the semantic level, CBI-formulas have the normal bunched logic reading as declarative statements about resources, but its resource models necessarily feature more structure than those for other bunched logics; principally, they satisfy the requirement that every resource has a unique dual. At the proof-theoretic level, a very natural formalism for CBI is provided by a display calculus \`a la Belnap, which can be seen as a generalisation of the bunched sequent calculus for BI. In this paper we formulate the aforementioned model theory and proof theory for CBI, and prove some fundamental results about the logic, most notably completeness of the proof theory with respect to the semantics.Comment: 42 pages, 8 figure
