Accurate determination of the scattering length of metastable Helium atoms using dark resonances between atoms and exotic molecules
We present a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length a of
spin-polarized helium atoms in the 2^3S_1 metastable state. Using two-photon
photoassociation spectroscopy and dark resonances we measure the energy
E_{v=14}= -91.35 +/- 0.06 MHz of the least bound state v=14 in the interaction
potential of the two atoms. We deduce a value of a = 7.512 +/- 0.005 nm, which
is at least one hundred times more precise than the best previous
determinations and is in disagreement with some of them. This experiment also
demonstrates the possibility to create exotic molecules binding two metastable
atoms with a lifetime of the order of 1 microsecond.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
A multibeam atom laser: coherent atom beam splitting from a single far detuned laser
We report the experimental realisation of a multibeam atom laser. A single
continuous atom laser is outcoupled from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) via
an optical Raman transition. The atom laser is subsequently split into up to
five atomic beams with slightly different momenta, resulting in multiple,
nearly co-propagating, coherent beams which could be of use in interferometric
experiments. The splitting process itself is a novel realization of Bragg
diffraction, driven by each of the optical Raman laser beams independently.
This presents a significantly simpler implementation of an atomic beam
splitter, one of the main elements of coherent atom optics
The inner circumstellar disk of the UX Ori star V1026 Sco
The UX Ori type variables (named after the prototype of their class) are
intermediate-mass pre-main sequence objects. One of the most likely causes of
their variability is the obscuration of the central star by orbiting dust
clouds. We investigate the structure of the circumstellar environment of the
UX~Ori star V1026 Sco (HD 142666) and test whether the disk inclination is
large enough to explain the UX Ori variability. We observed the object in the
low-resolution mode of the near-infrared interferometric VLTI/AMBER instrument
and derived H- and K-band visibilities and closure phases. We modeled our AMBER
observations, published Keck Interferometer observations, archival MIDI/VLTI
visibilities, and the spectral energy distribution using geometric and
temperature-gradient models. Employing a geometric inclined-ring disk model, we
find a ring radius of 0.15 +- 0.06 AU in the H band and 0.18 +- 0.06 AU in the
K band. The best-fit temperature-gradient model consists of a star and two
concentric, ring-shaped disks. The inner disk has a temperature of
1257^{+133}_{-53} K at the inner rim and extends from 0.19 +- 0.01 AU to 0.23
+- 0.02 AU. The outer disk begins at 1.35^{+0.19}_{-0.20} AU and has an inner
temperature of 334^{+35}_{-17} K. The derived inclination of
48.6^{+2.9}_{-3.6}deg approximately agrees with the inclination derived with
the geometric model (49 +- 5deg in the K band and 50 +- 11deg in the H band).
The position angle of the fitted geometric and temperature-gradient models are
163 +- 9deg (K band; 179 +- 17deg in the H band) and 169.3^{+4.2}_{-6.7}deg,
respectively. The narrow width of the inner ring-shaped model disk and the disk
gap might be an indication for a puffed-up inner rim shadowing outer parts of
the disk. The intermediate inclination of ~50deg is consistent with models of
UX Ori objects where dust clouds in the inclined disk obscure the central star
Morphotectonic evolution of the Jebel Bou Naceur in the South Middle Atlas Fault Zone (Morocco)
International audienceIn eastern Morocco, fault-related folds develop above the South Middle Atlas fault that separates the J. Bou Naceur 'pop-up' structure and the Missour Basin, filled with alluvial sediments. Using a combination of surfaces, field observations and digital topographic information, we have investigated several geomorphic criteria and geometry of depositional surfaces governed by the relief's growth. The propagation of the deformation is recorded by warped segmented fans that moved southeastward and wellpreserved geomorphological features of tectonic origin. Uplift of the anticline hinges and acceleration of valley incision since the Late Pliocene are considered a consequence of the ongoing NW-SE convergence between Africa and Eurasia. A scenario of morphotectonic evolution of this active mountain front is proposed
Multi-resolution texture classification based on local image orientation
The aim of this paper is to evaluate quantitatively the discriminative power of the image orientation in the texture classification process. In this regard, we have evaluated the performance of two texture classification schemes where the image orientation is extracted using the partial derivatives of the Gaussian function. Since the texture descriptors are dependent on the observation scale, in this study the main emphasis is placed on the implementation of multi-resolution texture analysis schemes. The experimental results were obtained when the analysed texture descriptors were applied to standard texture databases
Episodes of falling among elderly people: a systematic review and meta-analysis of social and demographic pre-disposing characteristics
CONTEXT: The multifactorial nature of falls among elderly people is well-known. Identifying the social-demographic characteristics of elderly people who fall would enable us to define the typical profile of the elderly who are at risk of falling. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to isolate studies in which the social-demographic risk factors for falls among the elderly have been evaluated and to carry out a meta-analysis by combining the results of all of these selected studies. METHOD: We did a systematic literature review using the key words "accidental fall / numerical data" and "risk factors." Inclusion criteria entailed the selection of articles with the following characteristics: population of subjects aged 60 years or over, falls that took place in everyday life, and social-demographic risk factors for falls. RESULTS: 3,747 indexed articles published between 1981 and 2007 were identified, and 177 studies with available data were included, of which 129 had data on social-demographic risk factors for falls. Difficulties in activities of daily living (ADL) or in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) double the risk of falling: The OR and 95% Cl were 2.26 (2.09, 2.45) for disturbance ADL and 2.10 (1.68, 2.64) for IADL. The OR and 95% Cl for Caucasians were 1.68 (0.98 - 2.88) and 0.64 (0.51 - 0.80) for Hispanics. In the subgroup of patients older than eighty, being married protected people from falling with an OR and 95% Cl =0.68 (0.53 - 0.87). CONCLUSION: Defining factors that create a risk of falling and protect elderly people from falls using social-demographic characteristics lets us focus on an "at risk" population for which a specific program could be developed
Frequency shifts of photoassociative spectra of ultracold metastable Helium atoms : a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length
We observe light-induced frequency shifts in one-color photoassociative
spectra of magnetically trapped He atoms in the metastable
state. A pair of ultracold spin-polarized helium atoms is excited into
a molecular bound state in the purely long range potential connected to
the asymptote. The shift arises from the optical coupling of
the molecular excited bound state with the scattering states and the bound
states of two colliding atoms. We measure the frequency-shifts for
several ro-vibrational levels in the potential and find a linear
dependence on the photoassociation laser intensity. Comparison with a
theoretical analysis provides a good indication for the s-wave scattering
length of the quintet () potential, nm, which
is significantly lower than most previous results obtained by non-spectroscopic

Egg production in the euryhaline tilapia, Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii, experimentally maintained in fresh, sea and hypersaline waters
Through the experiments presented here we wanted to test whether egg production of the black-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii under experimental conditions varies as a function of ambient salinity (fresh waters vs. sea waters vs. hypersaline waters, 0, 35 and 70, respectively) and whether these responses differ between fish acclimated within a few weeks from fresh water to saline and hypersaline environments (experiments E1 and E2, monitoring over 10 and 18 weeks), and individuals born and raised all life long at the experimental salinities (E3, monitoring over 18 weeks). In total, 233 spawns were collected. In each of the three experiments, the reproductive investment (gram of egg per gram of female over 2 weeks) did not differ between salinities of 0 and 35, whereas it was 2-3 times lower at 70 than at 0-35, because of lower spawning frequency (E1-E3), smaller clutch size (E1) and lower spawn mass (E1-E3). Finally, fish acclimated to salinity from fresh water over a few weeks and those maintained at a particular salinity all life long showed similar reproductive traits, thereby emphasizing the remarkable physiological plasticity of this species
The use of wholeâbody cryotherapy: timeâ and doseâresponse investigation on circulating blood catecholamines and heart rate variability
Purpose A predominance of parasympathetic drive is observed following cold exposure. Such modulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is associated with faster post-exercise recovery. Within this context, whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) has been spreading in sport medicine, though the optimal temperature and frequency are unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of different cryotherapy conditions on the sympathovagal balance. Methods Forty healthy males were randomly assigned into five different groups (â 110 °C, â 60 °C, â 10 °C, control temperature [â 24 °C]) and undertook 5 WBC sessions over 5 consecutive days. Cardiac autonomic activity was assessed through heart rate variability (HRV) using power density of high frequency (HF), root-mean square difference of successive RâR intervals (RMSSD) and sympathovagal balance (LF/HF). Systemic sympathetic activity was assessed via circulating blood catecholamines. Results Mean weekly RMSSD (pre: 48 ± 22 ms, post: 68 ± 29 ms) and HF (pre: 607 ± 692 ms2, post: 1271 ± 1180 ms2) increased (p < 0.05) from pre to post WBC, only in the â 110 °C condition. A rise in plasma norepinephrine was found after the first â 110 °C WBC session only (pre: 173 ± 98, post: 352 ± 231 ng Lâ1, p < 0.01); whereas, it was not significant after the 5th session (pre: 161 ± 120, post: 293 ± 245 ng Lâ1, p = 0.15). Conclusion These results suggest that one â 110 °C WBC exposure is required to stimulate the ANS. After five daily exposures, a lower autonomic response was recorded compared to day one, therefore suggesting the development of physiological habituation to WBC
