Excitation of the 3.071mm Hyperfine Line in Li-Like 57-Fe in Astrophysical Plasmas
As noted first by Sunyaev & Churazov (1984), the 3.071 mm hyperfine line from
might be observable in astrophysical plasmas. We assess the
atomic processes which might contribute to the excitation of this line. We
determine the intensity of the hyperfine line from an isothermal, coronal
plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium and for a coronal plasma cooling
isobarically due to its own radiation. Comparisons of the hyperfine line to
other lines emitted by the same ion, Fe, are shown to be useful for
deriving the isotopic fraction of Fe. We calculate the ratios of the
hyperfine line to the 2s--2p EUV lines at 192 \AA and 255 \AA, and the 2s--3p

Recombination Rate Coefficients for KLL Di-electronic Satellite Lines of Fe XXV and Ni XXVII
The unified method for total electron-ion recombination is extended to study
the dielectronic satellite (DES) lines. These lines, formed from radiative
decay of autoionizing states, are highly sensitive temperature diagnostics of
astrophysical and laboratory plasma sources. The computation of the unified
recombination rates is based on the relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix method
and close coupling approximation. Extending the theoretical formulation
developed earlier we present recombination rate coefficients for the 22
satellite lines of KLL complexes of helium-like Fe XXV and Ni XXVII. The
isolated resonance approximation, commonly used throughout plasma modeling,
treats these resonances essentially as bound features except for dielectronic
capture into, and autoionization out of, these levels. A line profile or cross
section shape is often assumed. On the other hand, by including the coupling
between the autoionizing and continuum channels, the unified method gives the
intrinsic spectrum of DES lines which includes not only the energies and
strengths, but also the natural line or cross section shapes. A formulation is
presented to derive autoionization rates from unified resonance strengths and
enable correspondence with the isolated resonance approximation. While the
rates compare very well with existing rates for the strong lines to <20%, the
differences for weaker DES lines are larger. We also illustrate the application
of the present results to the analysis of K ALPHA complexes observed in
high-temperature X-ray emission spectra of Fe XXV and Ni XXVII. There are
considerable differences with previous results in the total KLL intensity for
Fe XXV at temperatures below the temperature of maximum abundance in coronal

K-shell dielectronic resonances in photoabsorption: differential oscillator strengths for Li-like C IV, O VI, and Fe XXIV
Recently X-ray photoabsorption in KLL resonances of O VI was predicted
[Pradhan, Astrophys.J. Lett. 545, L165 (2000)], and detected by the Chandra
X-ray Observatory [Lee et al, Astrophys. J. {\it Lett.}, submitted].
The required resonance oscillator strengths f_r, are evaluated in terms of
the differential oscillator strength df/de that relates bound and continuum
absorption. We present the f_r values from radiatively damped and undamped
photoionization cross sections for Li-like C,O, and Fe calculated using
relativistic close coupling Breit-Pauli R-matrix method. The KLL resonances of
interest here are: 1s2p (^3P^o) 2s [^4P^o_{1/2,3/2}, ^2P^o_{1/2,3/2}] and 1s2p
(^1P^o) 2s [^2P^o_{1/2,3/2}]. The KLL photoabsorption resonances in Fe XXIV are
fully resolved up to natural autoionization profiles for the first time. It is
demonstrated that the undamped f_r independently yield the resonance radiative
decay rates, and thereby provide a precise check on the resolution of
photoionization calculations in general. The predicted photoabsorption features
should be detectable by the X-ray space observatories and enable column
densities in highly ionized astrophysical plasmas to be determined from the
calculated f_r. The dielectronic satellites may appear as redward broadening of

On the importance of satellite lines to the He-like K ALPHA complex and the G ratio for calcium, iron, and nickel
New, more detailed calculations of the emission spectra of the He-like K
ALPHA complex of calcium, iron and nickel have been carried out using data from
both distorted-wave and R-matrix calculations. The value of the GD ratio (an
extended definition of the G ratio that accounts for the effect of resolved and
unresolved satellite lines) is significantly enhanced at temperatures below the
temperature of He-like maximum abundance. Furthermore it is shown that
satellite lines are important contributors to the GD ratio such that GD/G>1 at
temperatures well above the temperature of maximum abundance. These new
calculations demonstrate, with an improved treatment of the KLn (n>=3)
satellite lines, that K ALPHA satellite lines need to be included in models of
He like spectra even at relatively high temperatures. The excellent agreement
between spectra and line ratios calculated from R-matrix and distorted-wave
data also confirms the validity of models based on distorted-wave data for
highly charged systems, provided the effect of resonances are taken into

State-resolved valence shell photoionization of Be-like ions: experiment and theory
High-resolution photoionization experiments were carried out using beams of
Be-like C, N, and O ions with roughly equal populations of
the S ground-state and the P manifold of metastable components. The
energy scales of the experiments are calibrated with uncertainties of 1 to 10
meV depending on photon energy. Resolving powers beyond 20,000 were reached
allowing for the separation of contributions from the individual metastable
P, P, and P states. The measured data compare

Effects of regular salt marsh haying on marsh plants, algae, invertebrates and birds at Plum Island Sound, Massachusetts

The definitive version was published in Wetlands Ecology and Management 17 (2009): 469-487, doi: 10.1007/s11273-008-9125-3.The haying of salt marshes, a traditional activity since colonial times in New England, still occurs in about 400 ha of marsh in the Plum Island Sound estuary in northeastern Massachusetts. We took advantage of this haying activity to investigate how the periodic large-scale removal of aboveground biomass affects a number of marsh processes. Hayed marshes were no different from adjacent reference marshes in plant species density (species per area) and end-of-year aboveground biomass, but did differ in vegetation composition. Spartina patens was more abundant in hayed marshes than S. alterniflora, and the reverse was true in reference marshes. The differences in relative covers of these plant species were not associated with any differences between hayed and reference marshes in the elevations of the marsh platform. Instead it suggested that S. patens was more tolerant of haying than S. alterniflora. S. patens had higher stem densities in hayed marshes than it did in reference marshes, suggesting that periodic cutting stimulated tillering of this species. Although we predicted that haying would stimulate benthic chlorophyll production by opening up the canopy, we found differences to be inconsistent, possibly due to the relatively rapid regrowth of S. patens and to grazing by invertebrates on the algae. The pulmonate snail, Melampus bidendatus was depleted in its δ13C content in the hayed marsh compared to the reference, suggesting a diet shift to benthic algae in hayed marshes. The stable isotope ratios of a number of other consumer species were not affected by haying activity. Migratory shorebirds cue in to recently hayed marshes and may contribute to short term declines in some invertebrate species, however the number of taxa per unit area of marsh surface invertebrates and their overall abundances were unaffected by haying over the long term. Haying had no impact on nutrient concentrations in creeks just downstream from hayed plots, but the sediments of hayed marshes were lower in total N and P compared to references. In sum, haying appeared to affect plant species composition but had only short-term affects on consumer organisms. This contrasts with many grassland ecosystems, where an intermediate level of disturbance, such as by grazing, increases species diversity and may stimulate productivity. Platinum–rhodium–tin/carbon electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation in acid media: effect of the precursor addition order and the amount of tin
Carbon-supported Pt x –Rh y –Sn z catalysts (x:y:z = 3:1:4, 6:2:4, 9:3:4) are prepared by Pt, Rh, and Sn precursors reduction in different addition order. The materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques and are evaluated for the electrooxidation of ethanol in acidic media by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and anode potentiostatic polarization. The influence of both the order in which the precursors are added and the composition of metals in the catalysts on the electrocatalytic activity and physico-chemical characteristics of Pt x –Rh y –Sn z /C catalysts is evaluated. Oxidized Rh species prevail on the surface of catalysts synthesized by simultaneous co-precipitation, thus demonstrating the influence of synthesis method on the oxidation state of catalysts. Furthermore, high amounts of Sn in composites synthesized by co-precipitation result in very active catalysts at low potentials (bifunctional effect), while medium Sn load is needed for sequentially deposited catalysts when the electronic effect is most important (high potentials), since more exposed Pt and Rh sites are needed on the catalyst surface to alcohol oxidation. The Pt3–Rh1–Sn4/C catalyst prepared by co-precipitation is the most active at potentials lower than 0.55 V (related to bifunctional effect), while the Pt6–Rh2–Sn4/C catalyst, prepared by sequential precipitation (first Rh and, after drying, Pt + Sn), is the most active above 0.55 V.The authors thank the Brazilian National Council of Technological and Scientific Development-CNPq (Grants: 402243/2012-9, 303630/2012-4, 474261/2013-1, 407274/2013-8, and 310282/2013-6) for the scholarships and financial support for this work
Diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in the ICU
Invasive candidiasis ranges from 5 to 10 cases per 1,000 ICU admissions and represents 5% to 10% of all ICU-acquired infections, with an overall mortality comparable to that of severe sepsis/septic shock. A large majority of them are due to Candida albicans, but the proportion of strains with decreased sensitivity or resistance to fluconazole is increasingly reported. A high proportion of ICU patients become colonized, but only 5% to 30% of them develop an invasive infection. Progressive colonization and major abdominal surgery are common risk factors, but invasive candidiasis is difficult to predict and early diagnosis remains a major challenge. Indeed, blood cultures are positive in a minority of cases and often late in the course of infection. New nonculture-based laboratory techniques may contribute to early diagnosis and management of invasive candidiasis. Both serologic (mannan, antimannan, and betaglucan) and molecular (Candida-specific PCR in blood and serum) have been applied as serial screening procedures in high-risk patients. However, although reasonably sensitive and specific, these techniques are largely investigational and their clinical usefulness remains to be established. Identification of patients susceptible to benefit from empirical antifungal treatment remains challenging, but it is mandatory to avoid antifungal overuse in critically ill patients. Growing evidence suggests that monitoring the dynamic of Candida colonization in surgical patients and prediction rules based on combined risk factors may be used to identify ICU patients at high risk of invasive candidiasis susceptible to benefit from prophylaxis or preemptive antifungal treatment
