    Can dissuasive cigarettes influence young peoples’ perceptions of smoking?

    Background In order to counter the attractiveness of cigarettes, Article 11 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control mentions the possibility of including a health warning on cigarettes. The objective of this study was toexplore perceptions of cigarettes designed to be dissuasive (either displaying a text health warning or pictogram, unattractively coloured, or a combination of these). Methods In-depth interviews were conducted with 31 people in France aged 15-25 years (11daily smokers, 10 occasional smokers, 10 non-smokers, 15 females, 16 males). Participants were shown the different dissuasive cigarettes (displaying the warning \u27Smoking kills\u27, a ‘skull and crossbones’ pictogram, unattractive shades of brown or green, or a combination of all three). Open-ended questions were asked about the attractiveness of the cigarettes, perception of risk, the image of the smoker, and influence on desire to quit or not to start. Discussions were audio-recorded and transcribed. Manual coding and « IRaMuTeQ » software was used to analyse the data. Results The different dissuasive elements used were found to increase negative health perceptions (e.g.  increase risk), reduce positive smoker image and the perceived pleasure of smoking (e.g. embarrassment of smoking in front of friends), decrease desire to start smoking and increase desire to quit. The most dissuasive cigarette was an unattractively coloured cigarette which displayed both the warning \u27smoking kills\u27 and \u27skull and bones\u27 pictogram. Conclusion This study highlights the importance of the appearance of the cigarette, and suggests that dissuasive cigarettes may be an innovative tobacco control measure for governments

    An inter-model assessment of the role of direct air capture in deep mitigation pathways

    The feasibility of large-scale biological CO2 removal to achieve stringent climate targets remains unclear. Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) offers an alternative negative emissions technology (NET) option. Here we conduct the first inter-model comparison on the role of DACCS in 1.5 and 2°C scenarios, under a variety of techno-economic assumptions. Deploying DACCS significantly reduces mitigation costs, and it complements rather than substitutes other NETs. The key factor limiting DACCS deployment is the rate at which it can be scaled up. Our scenarios’ average DACCS scale-up rates of 1.5 GtCO2/yr would require considerable sorbent production and up to 300 EJ/yr of energy input by 2100. The risk of assuming that DACCS can be deployed at scale, and finding it to be subsequently unavailable, leads to a global temperature overshoot of up to 0.8°C. DACCS should therefore be developed and deployed alongside, rather than instead of, other mitigation options

    Enzyme-functionalized biomimetic apatites: concept and perspectives in view of innovative medical approaches

    Biomimetic nanocrystalline calcium-deficient apatite compounds are particularly attractive for the setup of bioactive bone-repair scaffolds due to their high similarity to bone mineral in terms of chemical composition, structural and substructural features. As such, along with the increasingly appealing development of moderate temperature engineered routes for sample processing, they have widened the armamentarium of orthopedic and maxillofacial surgeons in the field of bone tissue engineering. This was made possible by exploiting the exceptional surface reactivity of biomimetic apatite nanocrystals, capable of easily exchanging ions or adsorbing (bio)molecules, thus leading to highly-versatile drug delivery systems. In this contribution we focus on the preparation of hybrid materials combining biomimetic nanocrystalline apatites and enzymes (lysozyme and subtilisin). This paper reports physico-chemical data as well as cytotoxicity evaluations towards Cal-72 osteoblast-like cells and finally antimicrobial assessments towards selected strains of interest in bone surgery. Biomimetic apatite/enzyme hybrids could be prepared in varying buffers. They were found to be non-cytotoxic toward osteoblastic cells and the enzymes retained their biological activity (e.g. bond cleavage or antibacterial properties) despite the immobilization and drying processes. Release properties were also examined. Beyond these illustrative examples, the concept of biomimetic apatites functionalized with enzymes is thus shown to be useable in practice, e.g. for antimicrobial purposes, thus widening possible therapeutic perspectives

The results show that different elements (green or brown colours, degree of covering, a warning, a « skull and cross bones » pictogram) impact the negative representations raised by the tobacco product (dangers), affect the image of smokers, reduce the pleasure to smoke and smoking behavioural intentions

    Apatites in Gale Crater

    ChemCam is an active remote sensing instrument suite that has operated successfully on MSL since landing Aug. 6th, 2012. It uses laser pulses to remove dust and to analyze rocks up to 7 m away. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) obtains emission spectra of materials ablated from the samples in electronically excited states. The intensities of the emission lines scale with the abundances of the related element. ChemCam is sensitive to most major rock-forming elements as well as to a set of minor and trace elements such as F, Cl, Li, P, Sr, Ba, and Rb. The measured chemical composition can then be used to infer the mineralogical composition of the ablated material. Here, we report a summary of inferred apatite detections along the MSL traverse at Gale Crater. We present the geologic settings of these findings and derive some interpretations about the formation conditions of apatite in time and space
