ROSAT HRI observations of the intermediate-age open cluster IC 4756
We have obtained an 88 kilosecond ROSAT HRI exposure of the intermediate-age open cluster IC 4756 with the purpose of detecting stars in the high luminosity tail (log LX ≥1029 erg s−1) of its X-ray luminosity distribution. However, only 1 cluster member (HSS 201) out of the 60 members inside the central high-sensitivity region of the HRI field of view (FOV) was detected. This star has spectral type A8, suggesting a close binary system with a low mass X-ray emitting companion. We compare the distribution of upper limits for F and G-type dwarfs in IC 4756 with the X-ray distribution functions of the similarly aged Hyades and Praesepe clusters. The results of this statistical analysis are inconclusive for G-type stars, but suggest that at least F-type stars in IC 4756 are not as X-ray luminous as their Hyades counterparts, thus indicating intrinsic differences between the two clusters. Finally, our data indicate a deficit of very active binaries with respect to both Hyades and Praesepe, and older open clusters
Discovery of a meteoritic ejecta layer containing unmelted impactor fragments at the base of Paleocene lavas, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Evidence for meteorite impacts in the geological record may include the presence of
shocked minerals, spherule layers, and geochemical anomalies. However, it is highly unusual to nd unmelted crystals from the actual impactor within an ejecta layer. Here we detail the rst recorded occurrence of vanadium-rich osbornite (TiVN) on Earth, from two sites on Skye, northwest Scotland, which are interpreted as part of a meteoritic ejecta layer. TiVN has only previously been reported as dust from comet Wild 2, but on Skye it has been identi ed as an unmelted phase. Both ejecta layer sites also contain niobium-rich osbornite (TiNbN), which has not previously been reported. An extraterrestrial origin for these deposits is strongly supported by the presence of reidite (a high-pressure zircon polymorph), which is only found naturally at sites of meteorite impact. Barringerite [(Fe,Ni)2P], baddeleyite (ZrO2), alabandite (MnS), and carbon-bearing native iron spherules, together with planar deformation features and diaplectic glass in quartz, further support this thesis. We demonstrate through eld relationships and Ar-Ar dating that the meteorite strike occurred during the mid-Paleocene. This is the rst recorded mid-Paleocene impact event in the region and is coincident with the onset of magmatism in the British Palaeogene Igneous Province (BPIP). The Skye ejecta layer deposits provoke important questions regarding their lateral extent at the base of the BPIP and the possibility of their presence elsewhere beneath the much larger North Atlantic Igneous Province

How are normal sleeping controls selected? A systematic review of cross-sectional insomnia studies, and a standardised method to select healthy controls for sleep research
There appears to be some inconsistency in how normal sleepers (controls) are selected and screened for participation in research studies for comparison with insomnia patients. The purpose of the current study is to assess and compare methods of identifying normal sleepers in insomnia studies, with reference to published standards. We systematically reviewed the literature on insomnia patients which included control subjects. The resulting 37 articles were systematically reviewed with reference to the five criteria for normal sleep specified by Edinger et al. (2004). In summary, these criteria are: evidence of sleep disruption; sleep scheduling; general health; substance/medication use; and other sleep disorders. We found sleep diaries, PSG, and clinical screening examinations to be widely used with both control subjects and insomnia participants. However, there are differences between research groups in the precise definitions applied to the components of normal sleep. We found that none of reviewed studies applied all of the Edinger et al. criteria, and 16% met four criteria. In general, screening is applied most rigorously at the level of a clinical disorder, whether physical, psychiatric, or sleep. While the Edinger et al. criteria seem to be applied in some form by most researchers, there is scope to improve standards and definitions in this area. Ideally, different methods such as sleep diaries and questionnaires would be used concurrently with objective measures to ensure normal sleepers are identified, and descriptive information for control subjects would be reported. Here, we have devised working criteria and methods to be used for assessment of normal sleepers. This would help clarify the nature of the control group, in contrast to insomnia subjects and other patient groups
Preservation of plant-wax biomarkers in deserts:implications for Quaternary environment and human evolutionary studies
Analysis of plant‐wax biomarkers from sedimentary sequences can enable past environmental and hydrological reconstruction and provide insights into past hominin adaptations. However, biomarker preservation in desert contexts has been considered unlikely given the sparse nature of the vegetation within the landscape. Here we evaluate the preservation of n‐alkanes and fatty acids collected from four depositional sequences associated with archaeological contexts in the Nefud Desert, Saudi Arabia, and the Thar Desert, India. Pleistocene and Holocene samples were selected to understand the effects of age on preservation. The results of molecular distribution patterns and indices, particularly the high carbon preference index and average chain length, show the preservation of plantwax biomarkers in both the Holocene and Pleistocene desert sequences, while δ13C values and organic content provide insights into the vegetation contributing to the plant‐wax organic pool. This study provides a baseline for understanding human–environment interactions and for reconstructing changes in arid land habitats of relevance to hominins during the Quaternary.peer-reviewe
Mass-Losing Semiregular Variable Stars in Baade's Windows
By cross-correlating the results of two recent large-scale surveys, the
general properties of a well defined sample of semi-regular variable stars have
been determined. ISOGAL mid-infrared photometry and MACHO lightcurves are
assembled for approximately 300 stars in the Baade's Windows of low extinction
towards the Galactic bulge. These stars are mainly giants of late M spectral
type, evolving along the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are found to
possess a wide and continuous distribution of pulsation periods and to obey an
approximate log~period -- bolometric magnitude relation or set of such
relations.
Approximate mass-loss rates in the range of 1e-8 to 5e-7 M_sun per year are
derived from ISOGAL mid-infrared photometry and models of stellar spectra
adjusted for the presence of optically-thin circumstellar silicate dust.
Mass-loss rates depend on luminosity and pulsation period. Some stars lose mass
as rapidly as short-period Miras but do not show Mira-like amplitudes. A period
of 70 days or longer is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for mass
loss to occur.
For AGB stars in the mass-loss ranges that we observe, the functional
dependence of mass-loss rate on temperature and luminosity is found to be in
agreement with recent theoretical predictions. If we include our mass-loss
rates with a sample of extreme mass-losing AGB stars in the Large Magellanic
Cloud, we get the general result for AGB stars that mass-loss rate is
proportional to luminosity^{2.7}, valid for AGB stars with 10^{-8} to 10^{-4}

Representations of sport in the revolutionary socialist press in Britain, 1988–2012
This paper considers how sport presents a dualism to those on the far left of the political spectrum. A long-standing, passionate debate has existed on the contradictory role played by sport, polarised between those who reject it as a bourgeois capitalist plague and those who argue for its reclamation and reformation. A case study is offered of a political party that has consistently used revolutionary Marxism as the basis for its activity and how this party, the largest in Britain, addresses sport in its publications. The study draws on empirical data to illustrate this debate by reporting findings from three socialist publications. When sport did feature it was often in relation to high profile sporting events with a critical tone adopted and typically focused on issues of commodification, exploitation and alienation of athletes and supporters. However, readers’ letters, printed in the same publications, revealed how this interpretation was not universally accepted, thus illustrating the contradictory nature of sport for those on the far left
Analysis and modeling of high temporal resolution spectroscopic observations of flares on AD Leo
We report the results of a high temporal resolution spectroscopic monitoring
of the flare star AD Leo. During 4 nights, more than 600 spectra were taken in
the optical range using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the Intermediate
Dispersion Spectrograph (IDS). We have observed a large number of short and
weak flares occurring very frequently (flare activity > 0.71 hours-1). This is
in favour of the very important role that flares can play in stellar coronal
heating. The detected flares are non white-light flares and, though most of
solar flares belong to this kind, very few such events had been previously
observed on stars. The behaviour of different chromospheric lines (Balmer
series from H_alpha to H_11, Ca II H & K, Na I D_1 & D_2, He I 4026 AA and He I
D_3) has been studied in detail for a total of 14 flares. We have also
estimated the physical parameters of the flaring plasma by using a procedure
which assumes a simplified slab model of flares. All the obtained physical
parameters are consistent with previously derived values for stellar flares,
and the areas - less than 2.3% of the stellar surface - are comparable with the
size inferred for other solar and stellar flares. Finally, we have studied the
relationships between the physical parameters and the area, duration, maximum
