US Mass Media and Image of Afghanistan: Portrayal of Afghanistan by Newsweek and Time

The study aims at investigating as how Afghanistan is being represented and portrayed in two leading US magazines - Newsweek and Time. Prefatory pages of the paper shed some light on the growth of economy and media in Afghanistan followed by a brief overview of relations between the US and Afghanistan during the last decade. The contents of twenty leading articles of Newsweek and Time were analyzed which clearly depicts that the proportion of negative coverage (57.08%) was greater than the positive coverage (6.08%). Newsweek and Time mainly represented Afghanistan as an abode of Taliban and extremism, penitentiary for women, a narcotics den, a centre for Islamization, and a safe haven for AlQaida and Usama Bin Laden, to include a few.&nbsp

Role of Incubation in Women Entrepreneurship Development in Pakistan

Abstract: Business incubation is one of the implementation tools of government's strategy for facilitating women entrepreneurship development in Pakistan. Purpose of this study was to measure the importance and effectiveness of incubation services for women entrepreneurs in Pakistan. Study was carried out by using survey method. Tenants from a women specific incubator participated in this survey. Self-administered questionnaire measuring the importance and effectiveness of 34 incubation services was incorporated in this study. Results revealed that tenants perceived all the investigated incubation services very important for the success of their businesses. Research Output of Government College University Lahore, Pakistan: A Bibliometric Study Based on Scopus Database from 1908 to 2020

Abstract Purpose – The main purpose of the current study was to explore the research output of Government College University, Lahore Pakistan in terms of publications, citation trends, major research areas, co-authorship patterns, preferred journals, keywords used, and funding sponsored. Design/methodology/approach – Current study used bibliometric analysis methodology for achieving the objectives. Data were extracted from the Scopus database through a query. Query was executed in June 2021 at Prince Sultan University; Saudi Arabia and 6085 publications were retrieved. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were also defined. The results were filtered according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Finally, 6008 records were included in the final analysis which included articles, conference papers, reviews, and book chapters from 1908 to June 13, 2021. MS Excel, VOS Viewer, and Biblioshiny software were used for data analysis. Findings – Findings showed that publications and citation trends of Government College University remained low. However, the progress of publication and citations started in 2005. The top ten research areas were consisted of science subjects. Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities had no publications in the top ten areas. The majority of collaborated work from GC University authors was observed with the University of the Punjab, Lahore, University of Sargodha, and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. GC University authors also collaborated with international authors, but this collaboration was less as compared to collaboration at the national level. The top funding sources for research was HEC Pakistan. However, international funding sources were also found. Originality/Value – Current study is unique because, with the best of research knowledge, no study has been conducted regarding the research productivity of GC University, Lahore in past. The current study has practical implications in the sense that it is helpful for authorities of the University in allocating funds for research. The current study provides a comprehensive and collective picture of the research productivity of GC University, Lahore which helps to identify weak and strong areas related to research. The impact of sexual harassment on job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and absenteeism: findings from Pakistan compared to the United States

The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast how differences in perceptions of sexual harassment impact productive work environments for employees in Pakistan as compared to the US; in particular, how it affects job satisfaction, turnover, and/or absenteeism. This study analyzed employee responses in Pakistan (n = 146) and the United States (n = 102, 76) using questionnaire data. Significant results indicated that employees who were sexually harassed reported (a) a decrease in job satisfaction (b) greater turnover intentions and (c) a higher rate of absenteeism. Cross-cultural comparisons indicated that (a) Pakistani employees who were sexually harassed had greater job dissatisfaction and higher overall absenteeism than did their US counterparts and (b) Pakistani women were more likely to use indirect strategies to manage sexual harassment than were US targets

Effect of remote ischaemic conditioning on clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI): a single-blind randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Remote ischaemic conditioning with transient ischaemia and reperfusion applied to the arm has been shown to reduce myocardial infarct size in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). We investigated whether remote ischaemic conditioning could reduce the incidence of cardiac death and hospitalisation for heart failure at 12 months. METHODS: We did an international investigator-initiated, prospective, single-blind, randomised controlled trial (CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI) at 33 centres across the UK, Denmark, Spain, and Serbia. Patients (age >18 years) with suspected STEMI and who were eligible for PPCI were randomly allocated (1:1, stratified by centre with a permuted block method) to receive standard treatment (including a sham simulated remote ischaemic conditioning intervention at UK sites only) or remote ischaemic conditioning treatment (intermittent ischaemia and reperfusion applied to the arm through four cycles of 5-min inflation and 5-min deflation of an automated cuff device) before PPCI. Investigators responsible for data collection and outcome assessment were masked to treatment allocation. The primary combined endpoint was cardiac death or hospitalisation for heart failure at 12 months in the intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02342522) and is completed. FINDINGS: Between Nov 6, 2013, and March 31, 2018, 5401 patients were randomly allocated to either the control group (n=2701) or the remote ischaemic conditioning group (n=2700). After exclusion of patients upon hospital arrival or loss to follow-up, 2569 patients in the control group and 2546 in the intervention group were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. At 12 months post-PPCI, the Kaplan-Meier-estimated frequencies of cardiac death or hospitalisation for heart failure (the primary endpoint) were 220 (8·6%) patients in the control group and 239 (9·4%) in the remote ischaemic conditioning group (hazard ratio 1·10 [95% CI 0·91-1·32], p=0·32 for intervention versus control). No important unexpected adverse events or side effects of remote ischaemic conditioning were observed. INTERPRETATION: Remote ischaemic conditioning does not improve clinical outcomes (cardiac death or hospitalisation for heart failure) at 12 months in patients with STEMI undergoing PPCI. Nawa-e-waqt, Khabrain and Naya Akhbar of Multan city have been discussed / analyzed objectively and critically. Thus total no. of 3378 news items were analyzed in order to evaluate public / uncivilized and English worded based news items, of which total number of popular worded news items were 217, while English worded News items were 486. According to the findings of this research paper, the journalistic "Language of Niya Akhbar" was not up to the mark. Similarly, the journalistic language of Khabrain was up to the mark to some extent, as compared to Naya Akhbar. While on the other hand, the language used by Daily Jang Multan was better as compared to the rest of the Newspapers. In the last portion of the research article, valuable suggestions have been described.</p

Martial General Ayub Khan (1958-69), General Yahya Khan (1969-1971) and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (1971-1977) have been analyzed in critical and objective manner. This article has briefly described various tactics i.e. legal, economic and social, used by these regimes for curtailing and curbing freedom of Press in Pakistan. Perceptions, versions and point of view of the rulers have also been mentioned by the researchers. The article concludes that both autocratic and democratic regimes have tried to fix up media practitioners and Press. The Press Govt. relations, on the whole had been deteriorated with each passing day during this specific era. The findings of the research indicate that democratic Govt. of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had adopted same stern measures for curtailing the freedom of Press as used by his predecessor dictatorial regimes.</p

Marriage is a social contract that guarantees chastity, strengthens family life and contributes to the reproduction process. Before the advent of Islam, rampant polygamy was observed among the Arabs who always considered their wives merely as slave, and a source of their sexual satisfaction. However, Islam curbed this notion of rampant polygamy and limitized the number of wives upto four with the condition of ensuring the principle of equality among the wives. Maulana Umar Ahmad Usmani, a renowned scholar is of the view that Islam permits polygamy only in unavoidable circumstances. The contemporary modern scholars opine that there is the only one marriage concept in Islam and polygamy is restricted to some special situation. In the liberal world, polygamy is considered the violation of human rights where as having multiple illicit sexual relations are accepted in the name of liberty. The traditionalist scholars are of the view that Islam has clearly given the permission of polygamy upto four wives with the condition that a husband equally treats these four wives.
