Method for improving structural comprehension of historical buildings based on terrestrial laser scanner technology

[EN] It is well known that the restoration of historical buildings requires prior knowledge of them, which must be as rigorous and exhaustive as possible. Among the various studies that are required (historical, archaeological, construction materials, geotechnical, etc.) the understanding of the structural system is of great importance. It is often hard to interpret these data in this kind of buildings, which have been retrofitted and extended over the years. This paper proposes a replicable method to improve the construction and structural comprehension and assessment of historical buildings, through the analysis of specific sections based on digital surveying by terrestrial laser scanner (TLS).

    Get PDF
In this paper we describe the Ludo case, one of the case studies of the AGTIVE 2007 Tool Contest (see [22]). After summarising the case description, we give an overview of the submitted solutions. In particular, we propose a number of dimensions along which choices had to be made when solving the case, essentially setting up a solution space; we then plot the spectrum of solutions actually encountered into this solution space. In addition, there is a brief description of the special features of each of the submissions, to do justice to those aspects that are not distinguished in the general solution space

“Errors of judgement, not of intent”: The Southern Policy of Ulysses S. Grant

The Reconstruction era has been subject to countless studies seeking to vilify or celebrate citizens and politicians of the time. From an initial consensus on its immorality and opportunism, to a revisionism where its achievements were celebrated, and a post-revisionism where the cause of its downfall became the focus, the racial, social and political aspects of Reconstruction have been subject to over a century of debate. Within this historiography, though, the significance of Ulysses S. Grant has been predominantly ignored. Challenging the view that Grant lacked political and racial ideals, the aim of this thesis, and my original contribution to knowledge, is to define his Southern Policy in the context of a personal political and racial philosophy, rather than a record of achievement. An examination of the development of his viewpoint on Reconstruction, the rights of the freedmen, and the power of the President and Federal Government, reveals a struggle at the heart of Grant’s Southern policy as he sought to protect the results of the Civil War whilst hastening a close to the work or Reconstruction. Furthermore, careful study of his correspondence reveal him to be an egalitarian who, if permitted, would have been willing to manage the South with greater force and in far more absolute terms. The tension of his ideals and the dichotomy between thought and action resulted in an inconsistent approach to Southern state crises, counter-productive policy choices and ill-timed changes of course. The outcome was a Southern policy that was not only a political failure for Southern Republicans but, as revealed by a study of Grant’s philosophy on the political and racial issues of the day, a personal one for the President

Confined photon modes with triangular symmetry in hexagonal microcavities in 2D photonic Crystals

We present theoretical and experimental studies of the size and thickness dependencies of the optical emission spectra from microcavities with hexagonal shape in films of two-dimensional photonic crystal. A semiclassical plane-wave model, which takes into account the electrodynamic properties of quasi-2D planar photonic microcavity, is developed to predict the eigenfrequencies of the confined photon modes as a function of both the hexagon-cavity size and the film thickness. Modes with two different symmetries, triangular and hexagonal, are critically analyzed. It is shown that the model of confined photon modes with triangular symmetry gives a better agreement between the predicted eigenmodes and the observed resonances.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
