On Notions of Provability
In this thesis, we study notions of provability, i.e. formulas B(x,y) such that a formula
ϕ is provable in T if, and only if, there is m ∈ N such that T ⊢ B(⌜ϕ⌝,m) (m plays the
role of a parameter); the usual notion of provability, k-step provability (also known as
k-provability), s-symbols provability are examples of notions of provability.
We develop general results concerning notions of provability, but we also study in
detail concrete notions. We present partial results concerning the decidability of kprovability
for Peano Arithmetic (PA), and we study important problems concerning
k-provability, such as Kreisel’s Conjecture and Montagna’s Problem:
(∀n ∈ N.T ⊢k steps ϕ(n)) =⇒ T ⊢ ∀x.ϕ(x), [Kreisel’s Conjecture]
and
Does PA ⊢k steps PrPA(⌜ϕ⌝)→ϕ imply PA ⊢k steps ϕ? [Montagna’s Problem]
Incompleteness, Undefinability of Truth, and Recursion are different entities that
share important features; we study this in detail and we trace these entities to common
results.
We present numeral forms of completeness and consistency, numeral completeness
and numeral consistency, respectively; numeral completeness guarantees that, whenever
a Σb
1(S12
)-formula ϕ(⃗x ) is such that ⃗Q
⃗x .ϕ(⃗x ) is true (where ⃗Q
is any array of quantifiers),
then this very fact can be proved inside S12
, more precisely S12
⊢ ⃗Q
⃗x .Prτ (⌜ϕ(
•⃗
x )⌝). We
examine these two results from a mathematical point of view by presenting the minimal
conditions to state them and by finding consequences of them, and from a philosophical
point of view by relating them to Hilbert’s Program.
The derivability condition “provability implies provable provability” is one of the main
derivability conditions used to derive the Second Incompleteness Theorem and is known
to be very sensitive to the underlying theory one has at hand. We create a weak theory
G2 to study this condition; this is a theory for the complexity class FLINSPACE. We also
e
PA ⊢k steps PrPA(⌜ϕ⌝)→ϕ implica PA ⊢k steps ϕ?
numeral e a consistência numeral, respectivamente; a completude numeral assegura
que, quando uma fórmula-Σb
1(S12) ϕ(⃗x ) é tal que ⃗Q
⃗x .ϕ(⃗x ) é verdadeira, então este facto
pode ser verificado dentro de S12, mais precisamente S12
⊢ ⃗Q
⃗x .Prτ (⌜ϕ(
•⃗

Diagonalization in Formal Mathematics
The use of diagonalization reasonings is transversal to the Mathematical practise. Since
Cantor, diagonalization reasonings are used in a great variety of areas that vanish from
Topology to Logic. The objective of the present thesis was to study the formal aspects
of diagonalization in Logic and more generally in the Mathematical practise. The main
goal was to find a formal theory that is behind important diagonalization phenomena in
Mathematics.
We started by the study of diagonalization in theories of Arithmetic: Diagonalization
Lemma and self-reference. In particular, we argued that important properties related to
self-reference are not decidable, and we argued that the diagonalization of formulas is
substantially different from the diagonalization of terms, more precisely, the Diagonal
Lemma cannot prove the Strong Diagonal Lemma.
We studied in detail Yablo’s Paradox. By presenting a minimal theory to express
Yablo’s Paradox, we argued that Yablo’s Paradox is not a paradox about Arithmetic. From
that theory and with the help of some notions of Temporal Logic, we claimed that Yablo’s
Paradox is self-referential.
After that, we studied several paradoxes — the Liar, Russell’s Paradox, and Curry’s
Paradox— and Löb’s Theorem, and we presented a common origin to those paradoxes and
theorem: Curry System. Curry Systems were studied in detail and a consistency result for
specific conditions was offered. Finally, we presented a general theory of diagonalization,
we exemplified the formal use of the theory, and we studied some results of Mathematics
using that general theory.
All the work that we present on this thesis is original. The fourth chapter gave rise to
a paper by the author ([SK17]) and the third chapter will also give rise in a short period
of time to a paper. Regarding the other chapters, the author, together with his Advisors,
is also preparing a paper
Comparison of Elastic Constants of Wood Determined by Ultrasonic Wave Propagation and Static Compression Testing
In Brazil, most reports on the elastic properties of wood include only the elastic modulus in the longitudinal direction. This is because of the difficulty in determining other properties through static testing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methodology for determining the three Young's moduli (EL, ER, ET), the three shear moduli (GLR, GLT, GRT), and the six Poisson ratios (VLR, VLT, VRL, VRT, VTL, VTR) using ultrasonic technology. For testing, we used specimens in the form of cubic prisms from the following species: Garapeira (Apuleia leiocarpa), Cupiuba (Goupia glabra), and Sydney Blue gum (Eucalyptus saligna). The ultrasonic tests were performed with plane transducers of longitudinal and transverse waves, both with a 1-MHz frequency. For comparison, the same specimens were tested by static compression. Based on the confidence intervals of the means, the results of the ultrasonic test produced values of longitudinal elasticity moduli (EL, ER, and ET) and shear moduli (GTR, GTL, and GLR) statistically equivalent to those obtained with static compression. In the case of the Poisson ratio, the results, using the confidence intervals, indicated that VRL, VLR, and VLT were not statistically equivalent to those obtained in static tests for any of the species. Conversely, VTL, VTR, VRT, were statistically equivalent to those obtained in static tests for all the species. In conclusion, the ultrasonic test for determining the Young's and shear moduli of wood was found to be simpler and less expensive than the static compression test, and the results are equally useful
Precision agriculture in sugar cane: instrumentation of a harvester, yield and soil attributes mapping
Em relação à calagem não houve variação significativa nos custos de aplicação do calcário pelas duas maneirasAbstract: The present research aims to instrument a sugarcane harvester in order to obtain the crop yield maps and, at the same time, evaluate and correlate the physical and chemical attributes of the soil using the yield data. In order to obtain these maps, an area measuring 42 ha located at São João Sugar and Alcohol Mill in Araras, São Paulo, Brazil. The yield mapping system of sugarcane crop developed (SIMPROCANA) uses load cells as an instrument to weighing the harvested material and it is capable to measure the flow passing by the matting before being launched to the transport vehicle. These data, together with the information obtained by a Global Positioning System (GPS) installed on the harvester, allow the elaboration of a digital map with the help of a Geographical Information System - GIS that represents the production on the surface for the harvested area. This system was tested under laboratory and field conditions. SIMPROCANA represented satisfactorily the spatial variability of the crop yield. The weight obtained by this system compared with that of sugarcane load in a mill's scale presented an average error of 0.96%, with a maximum of 6.4%. The result is not satisfactory anymore when it compares the weight obtained by using SIMPROCANA with that from the transportation vehicle weighed in the field. The average error associated in this case is around ten fold higher, when the association with the weight obtained in the mill's scale is performed. In relation to the making of map of physical and chemical attributes of soil (granulometry, macro and micronutrients, acidity, density, and resistance to penetration), two samplings were made in consecutive years. In the first
sampling, 170 samples were collected in a 42 ha area in a regular grid of 50 x 50 m, helped by a sampler vehicle. In the second one, 49 samples in a 100 x 100 m grid defined by the maximum reaching obtained by geostatistics analysis performed at the first sampling. The results of the first sampling were correlated with the sugarcane yield obtained by means of weighing the transport vehicle in the field. This alternative method allowed the using of the results from the first sampling once the harvester was not properly instrumented. The data from the second sampling were related to the yield mapping obtained by using SIMPROCANA. The results of the physical and chemical analyses used for the construction of semivariograms models adjusted better at the 50 x 50 m grid when compared to that of 100 x 100 m. the correlations between the yield and the soil attributes presented lower values. The higher indexes occurred for the variable altitudes (- 0.47%), clay rate (0.51%), and copper (0.55). Despite these low correlations, it was possible to recommend a varied rate application of inputs based exclusively on the information obtained from the chemical attributes of the soil. Simulation tests showed that the application costs under a varied rate of phosphated and potash fertilizers are practically half of the value calculated for a fixed rate. In relation to the liming, there was not significative variation in the prices of lime application spread by both methodsDoutoradoMaquinas AgricolasDoutor em Maquinas Agricola
Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is a surgical technique widely used in orthopedic surgery for the treatment of various pathological conditions, bone deformities or bone defects. The basic principle consists on the gradual distraction of two bone segments, previously submitted to a corticotomy and promptly fixated. New bone tissue is generated in the gap between the two segments.
During the curricular traineeship at Hospital Veterinário de S. Bento in Lisbon, three distraction osteogenesis procedures where performed, utilizing a carbon fiber monoplane unilateral external fixator. This study meant to assess the capacities of the distractor and establish a bone lengthening protocol applicable to all long bones, The protocol consisted in a low energy corticotomy at the bone diaphysis, preserving the periosteum, the vascularization and the surrounding soft tissues and in the appliance of two intramedullary pins to stabilize the bone segments, a 3 day latency period, and usage of a distraction ratio of 1 mm per day.
The device was applied in three dogs with less than two years, who suffered a premature closure of the bone’s growth plate, a congenital malformation or a fracture during their infancy. The bone lengthening period and regenerate bone was assessed by radiographs. The duration of the distraction phase and the consolidation phase was variable, but had a mean of 2 weeks for the distraction phase and 2 months for the consolidation phase.
The carbon fiber distractor was successfully applied and allowed to regenerate bone in femur, ulna and two radius. The bone distractions allowed a mechanical and aesthetic success, reaching relative lengthenings of 12,7% in the femur, 6,2% in the ulna and 7,1% and 6,6% in the two radius
The black population goes through racism, discrimination and genocide. To understand this situation it is necessary to debate the centrality of the state's performance. The question is about the role of the State in providing minimum protection for the black population, in view of the constant oppression, or fomenting actions of marginalization while maintaining the status quo of segregation and social positions. In this way, the following work will focus on the issues of the State in diverse theoretical perspectives on its formation and actions, focusing on the relation of this with the black population. The analysis of this state perspective is of great importance to understand the relegation of blacks in a society marked by slavery and racist relationships. This debate is in the focus of actually experienced by the black people in Brazil, being clear and indispensable the discussion and actions for changes. It is necessary to make explicit the way in which the problems of national character directly and daily affect the black population, demonstrating the treatment and the debate in the state scope. With this, the aim is to analyze the state dynamics of the main modern and contemporary theorists, starting from the contractual state and going through the Minimum State, Socialist and closing in the Anti-Racist, seeking a debate on the possibility of a State without the presence of racism

É neste enquadramento que surge o caso: “ Blackstone at the Gates?
The Hilton LBO with its 26 billion price tag was one the large investments of private

were conditioned by the economic cycle after 2008.With a current favourable US
economic context, combined with record levels at North American stock markets, the
topic covered in this project follows a natural increase in number and value of IPO’s in
US markets after the sub-prime crisis.
It is in this context arises the case study, "Blackstone at the Gates? Hilton LBO ", which
aims to study the Leveraged buy-out of Hilton Worldwide ("HW") with a focus on
progress of HW LBO since its start in 2007, passing through debt restructuring and
subsequent replacement on the stock exchange in 2013. This case study is a challenging
reflex, as how the sectorial and macro economic context may have influence on business
performance which is the starting point of this case. Amongst its content, there will be a
combination of a broad range of topics: private equity, valuation, restructuring of
companies, management policies in terms of value creation, balance and income sheet
structure, and relationship with the capital markets.
Furthermore, it will also be discussed the feasibility of Hilton Worldwide LBO replication
with European counterpart Meliá Hotels International, described in the companion case
"Bárbaros en la Puerta, La Caída de Melia". This particular case prospects the
performance of a similar operation with a 5 years’ timefram
Distraction Osteogenesis: Biological Principles and Its Application in Companion Animals
Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique widely used in orthopedic surgery for treatment of various pathological skeletal conditions, namely correction of limb-length discrepancies, angular deformity and treatment of distal and severely comminuted fractures, or bone defects through bone transport. The basic principle consists on the gradual distraction of two bone segments, previously submitted to a corticotomy and promptly fixated generally using of circular external skeletal fixation. New bone tissue is generated in the bone gap between the two segments. This review aims to describe the biological fundaments and principles of this technique, the surgical steps performed to attempt distraction osteogenesis, and its possible complications with main focus on its application in companion animals
