    Reduced-order models of series resonant inverters in induction heating applications

    From the controller design framework, a simple analytical model that captures the dominant behavior in the range of interest is the optimal. When modeling resonant circuits, complex mathematical models are obtained. These high-order models are not the most suitable for controller design. Although some assumptions can be made for simplifying these models, variable frequency operation or load uncertainty can make these premises no longer valid. In this work, a systematic modeling order reduction technique, Slowly Varying Amplitude and Phase (SVAP), is considered for obtaining simpler analytical models of resonant inverters. SVAP gives identical results as the classical model-order residualization technique from automatic control theory. A slight modification of SVAP, Slowly Varying Amplitude Derivative and Phase (SVADP) is applied in this paper to obtain a better validity range. SVADP is validated for a half-bridge series resonant inverter (HBSRI) and for a high- order plant, a dual-half bridge series resonant inverter (DHBSRI) giving analytical second-order transfer functions for both topologies. Simulation and experimental results are provided to show the validity range of the reduced-order models

    Cation-driven electrical conductivity in Ta-doped orthorhombic zirconia ceramics

    This paper is devoted to the study of the electrical conductivity of tantalum-doped zirconia ceramics prepared by spark plasma sintering. In this study, the temperature dependence of conductivity in as-prepared specimens and in those previously annealed in air is determined and compared. A semi-empirical model, which is based on the oxidation states of the cations, has been developed and successfully assessed. According to this, the conductivity is basically controlled by the diffusion of tetravalent zirconium cations in both cases, although the concentration of these species varies drastically with the amount of induced oxygen vacancies. This is a quite unexpected fact, since conductivity is normally controlled by anionic diffusion in zirconia ceramics. This option is forbidden here due to the presence of substitutional pentavalent cations. Therefore, conductivity values are much lower than those reported in trivalent or divalent substitutional cation doped zirconia ceramics

    Transverse Phase Locking for Vortex Motion in Square and Triangular Pinning Arrays

    We analyze transverse phase locking for vortex motion in a superconductor with a longitudinal DC drive and a transverse AC drive. For both square and triangular arrays we observe a variety of fractional phase locking steps in the velocity versus DC drive which correspond to stable vortex orbits. The locking steps are more pronounced for the triangular arrays which is due to the fact that the vortex motion has a periodic transverse velocity component even for zero transverse AC drive. All the steps increase monotonically in width with AC amplitude. We confirm that the width of some fractional steps in the square arrays scales as the square of the AC driving amplitude. In addition we demonstrate scaling in the velocity versus applied DC driving curves at depinning and on the main step, similar to that seen for phase locking in charge-density wave systems. The phase locking steps are most prominent for commensurate vortex fillings where the interstitial vortices form symmetrical ground states. For increasing temperature, the fractional steps are washed out very quickly, while the main step gains a linear component and disappears at melting. For triangular pinning arrays we again observe transverse phase locking, with the main and several of the fractional step widths scaling linearly with AC amplitude.Comment: 10 pages, 14 postscript figure

    Orientational pinning and transverse voltage: Simulations and experiments in square Josephson junction arrays

    We study the dependence of the transport properties of square Josephson Junctions arrays with the direction of the applied dc current, both experimentally and numerically. We present computational simulations of current-voltage curves at finite temperatures for a single vortex in the array (Ha2/Φ0=f=1/L2Ha^2/\Phi_0=f=1/L^2), and experimental measurements in 100×1000100\times1000 arrays under a low magnetic field corresponding to f0.02f\approx0.02. We find that the transverse voltage vanishes only in the directions of maximum symmetry of the square lattice: the [10] and [01] direction (parallel bias) and the [11] direction (diagonal bias). For orientations different than the symmetry directions, we find a finite transverse voltage which depends strongly on the angle ϕ\phi of the current. We find that vortex motion is pinned in the [10] direction (ϕ=0\phi=0), meaning that the voltage response is insensitive to small changes in the orientation of the current near ϕ=0\phi=0. We call this phenomenon orientational pinning. This leads to a finite transverse critical current for a bias at ϕ=0\phi=0 and to a transverse voltage for a bias at ϕ0\phi\not=0. On the other hand, for diagonal bias in the [11] direction the behavior is highly unstable against small variations of ϕ\phi, leading to a rapid change from zero transverse voltage to a large transverse voltage within a few degrees. This last behavior is in good agreement with our measurements in arrays with a quasi-diagonal current drive.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

    Background: In Cystic Pneumatosis Intestinalis, intramural gas filled cysts are formed in the gastrointestinal wall. Its pathogenesis is unknown and its clinical manifestations are variable. Case report: We report a 33 years old HIV positive woman in retroviral treatment presenting with abdominal pain and signs of peritoneal irritation. An abdominal CT scan showed intra and retroperitoneal gas and pneumatosis intestinalis in the right and transverse colon. The patient was managed conservatively with nasogastric aspiration with a favorable evolution and was discharged ten days after admission

    EVIDENT 3 Study: A randomized, controlled clinical trial to reduce inactivity and caloric intake in sedentary and overweight or obese people using a smartphone application: Study protocol

    Introduction: Mobile technology, when included within multicomponent interventions, could contribute to more effective weight loss. The objective of this project is to assess the impact of adding the use of the EVIDENT 3 application, designed to promote healthy living habits, to traditional modification strategies employed for weight loss. Other targeted behaviors (walking, caloric-intake, sitting time) and outcomes (quality of life, inflammatory markers, measurements of arterial aging) will also be evaluated. Methods: Randomized, multicentre clinical trial with 2 parallel groups. The study will be conducted in the primary care setting and will include 700 subjects 20 to 65 years, with a body mass index (27.5-40kg/m2), who are clinically classified as sedentary. The primary outcome will be weight loss. Secondary outcomes will include change in walking (steps/d), sitting time (min/wk), caloric intake (kcal/d), quality of life, arterial aging (augmentation index), and pro-inflammatory marker levels. Outcomes will be measured at baseline, after 3 months, and after 1 year. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group (IG) or the control group (CG). Both groups will receive the traditional primary care lifestyle counseling prior to randomization. The subjects in the IG will be lent a smartphone and a smartband for a 3-month period, corresponding to the length of the intervention. The EVIDENT 3 application integrates the information collected by the smartband on physical activity and the self-reported information by participants on daily food intake. Using this information, the application generates recommendations and personalized goals for weight loss. Discussion: There is a great diversity in the applications used obtaining different results on lifestyle improvement and weight loss. The populations studied are not homogeneous and generate different results. The results of this study will help our understanding of the efficacy of new technologies, combined with traditional counseling, towards reducing obesity and enabling healthier lifestyles. Ethicsanddissemination: The study was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the Health Area of Salamanca ("CREC of Health Area of Salamanca") on April 2016.     Critical Currents and Vortex States at Fractional Matching Fields in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning

    We study vortex states and dynamics in 2D superconductors with periodic pinning at fractional sub-matching fields using numerical simulations. For square pinning arrays we show that ordered states form at 1/1, 1/2, and 1/4 filling fractions while only partially ordered states form at other filling fractions, such as 1/3 and 1/5, in agreement with recent imaging experiments. For triangular pinning arrays we observe matching effects at filling fractions of 1/1, 6/7, 2/3, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/7. For both square and triangular pinning arrays we also find that, for certian sub-matching fillings, vortex configurations depend on pinning strength. For weak pinning, ordering in which a portion of the vortices are positioned between pinning sites can occur. Depinning of the vortices at the matching fields, where the vortices are ordered, is elastic while at the incommensurate fields the motion is plastic. At the incommensurate fields, as the applied driving force is increased, there can be a transition to elastic flow where the vortices move along the pinning sites in 1D channels and a reordering transition to a triangular or distorted triangular lattice. We also discuss the current-voltage curves and how they relate to the vortex ordering at commensurate and incommensurate fields.Comment: 14 figure

    Restauración de las olmedas ibéricas (Ulmus minor y U. laevis) en zonas riparias de la Comunidad de Madrid

    El proyecto LIFE+ “Olmos Vivos” (LIFE13 BIO/ES/000556) tiene como objetivo la restauración de unas formaciones vegetales, las olmedas, que por diversos motivos prácticamente han desaparecido del paisaje forestal español, a pesar de haber poseído un alto valor ecológico y cultural. La grafiosis ha constituido una de las enfermedades forestales más devastadoras, y supuso la práctica desaparición de las olmedas ibéricas de Ulmus minor . En el caso de Ulmus laevis , la alteración de su hábitat ligado a zonas temporalmente encharcadas y riberas ha provocado que las poblaciones españolas se encuentren en riesgo de desaparición. Gracias a la obtención de siete clones de U. minor resistentes a la grafiosis como fruto del Programa del Olmo (UPM-MAGRAMA), el presente proyecto permitirá reintroducir la especie en diversas localizaciones de ribera de los ríos Jarama y Tajo. Asimismo, se plantarán brinzales obtenidos de agrupaciones relícticas de U. laevis , con el fin de aumentar sus poblaciones y conservar sus recursos genéticos, en terrenos de naturaleza silícea de las riberas del río Jarama y Arroyo Viñuelas. El desarrollo del proyecto, de cinco años y tres meses de duración 2014-2019), prevé la plantación de unas 16 700 plantas. Al mismo tiempo se recuperará en nuestras ciudades y pueblos la presencia del olmo, mediante plantaciones con fines divulgativos en entornos urbanos y paseos históricos, para devolver así el protagonismo cultural a un árbol que siempre estuvo entre nosotros, presidiendo las reuniones en las plazas y acompañando con su sombra en muchos caminos de nuestra geografía

    The influence of climate and land-cover scenarios on dam management strategies in a highwater pressure catchment in Northeast Spain

    Altres ajuts: EU LIFE (LIFE12ENV/ES/000536)This paper evaluates the response of streamflow in a Mediterranean medium-scaled basin under land-use and climate change scenarios and its plausible implication on the management of Boadella-Darnius reservoir (NE Spain). Land cover and climate change scenarios supposed over the next several decades were used to simulate reservoir inflow using the Regional Hydro-Ecologic Simulation System (RHESsys) and to analyze the future impacts on water management (2021-2050). Results reveal a clear decrease in dam inflow (-34%) since the dam was operational from 1971 to 2013. The simulations obtained with RHESsys show a similar decrease (-31%) from 2021 to 2050. Considering the ecological minimum flow outlined by water authorities and the projected decrease in reservoir's inflows, different water management strategies are needed to mitigate the effects of the expected climate change
