    Vaporous marketing: Uncovering pervasive electronic cigarette advertisements on twitter

    Background Twitter has become the wild-west of marketing and promotional strategies for advertisement agencies. Electronic cigarettes have been heavily marketed across Twitter feeds, offering discounts, kid-friendly flavors, algorithmically generated false testimonials, and free samples. Methods All electronic cigarette keyword related tweets from a 10% sample of Twitter spanning January 2012 through December 2014 (approximately 850,000 total tweets) were identified and categorized as Automated or Organic by combining a keyword classification and a machine trained Human Detection algorithm. A sentiment analysis using Hedonometrics was performed on Organic tweets to quantify the change in consumer sentiments over time. Commercialized tweets were topically categorized with key phrasal pattern matching. Results The overwhelming majority (80%) of tweets were classified as automated or promotional in nature. The majority of these tweets were coded as commercialized (83.65% in 2013), up to 33% of which offered discounts or free samples and appeared on over a billion twitter feeds as impressions. The positivity of Organic (human) classified tweets has decreased over time (5.84 in 2013 to 5.77 in 2014) due to a relative increase in the negative words \u27ban\u27, \u27tobacco\u27, \u27doesn\u27t\u27, \u27drug\u27, \u27against\u27, \u27poison\u27, \u27tax\u27 and a relative decrease in the positive words like \u27haha\u27, \u27good\u27, \u27cool\u27. Automated tweets are more positive than organic (6.17 versus 5.84) due to a relative increase in the marketing words like \u27best\u27, \u27win\u27, \u27buy\u27, \u27sale\u27, \u27health\u27, \u27discount\u27 and a relative decrease in negative words like \u27bad\u27, \u27hate\u27, \u27stupid\u27, \u27don\u27t\u27. Conclusions Due to the youth presence on Twitter and the clinical uncertainty of the long term health complications of electronic cigarette consumption, the protection of public health warrants scrutiny and potential regulation of social media marketing

    Microwave thermal pre-treatment and calcination of biomineralised sorbents for calcium looping

    Waste eggshells have been investigated as biomineralised CO2 sorbents for the calcium looping cycle due to their high Ca content, low cost, availability, and high CO2 uptake. This work investigates a novel heat-pre-treatment using eggshells as raw material. The eggshells were simultaneously calcined and thermally pre-treated via microwave heating using different powers and times whilst maintaining the same input energy in a single mode cavity reactor. The calcined eggshells were characterised using standard characterisation techniques such as TGA and isotherms of N2 adsorption at 77 K. The dielectric properties were measured using the cavity perturbation technique at 2.45 GHz. Numerical electromagnetic simulations were performed using COMSOL Multiphysics and results were used to optimise the experimental setup. The treated materials were subjected to carbonation/calcination cycles in order to assess their suitability as a calcium-looping sorbent. The sorbent that exhibited a more stable CO2 uptake was the one treated at the highest power (800 W) 4.5 mmol CO2/g sorbent after 20 cycles under mild calcination conditions. Adsorbents prepared at 400, 600 and 800 W displayed similar CO2 uptake after 20 cycles when the calcination conditions were under more realistic conditions

    Value-based decision-making of cigarette and nondrug rewards in dependent and occasional cigarette smokers:An FMRI study

    Little is known about the neural functioning that underpins drug valuation and choice in addiction, including nicotine dependence. Following ad libitum smoking, 19 dependent smokers (smoked≥10/day) and 19 occasional smokers (smoked 0.5‐5/week) completed a decision‐making task. First, participants stated how much they were willing‐to‐pay for various amounts of cigarettes and shop vouchers. Second, during functional magnetic resonance imaging, participants decided if they wanted to buy these cigarettes and vouchers for a set amount of money. We examined decision‐making behaviour and brain activity when faced with cigarette and voucher decisions, purchasing (vs not purchasing) cigarettes and vouchers, and “value signals” where brain activity correlated with cigarette and voucher value. Dependent smokers had a higher willingness‐to‐pay for cigarettes and greater activity in the bilateral middle temporal gyrus when faced with cigarette decisions than occasional smokers. Across both groups, the decision to buy cigarettes was associated with activity in the left paracingulate gyrus, right nucleus accumbens, and left amygdala. The decision to buy vouchers was associated with activity in the left superior frontal gyrus, but dependent smokers showed weaker activity in the left posterior cingulate gyrus than occasional smokers. Across both groups, cigarette value signals were observed in the left striatum and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. To summarise, nicotine dependence was associated with greater behavioural valuation of cigarettes and brain activity during cigarette decisions. When purchasing cigarettes and vouchers, reward and decision‐related brain regions were activated in both groups. For the first time, we identified value signals for cigarettes in the brain

    Establishment of a pipeline to analyse non-synonymous SNPs in Bos taurus

    BACKGROUND: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are an abundant form of genetic variation in the genome of every species and are useful for gene mapping and association studies. Of particular interest are non-synonymous SNPs, which may alter protein function and phenotype. We therefore examined bovine expressed sequences for non-synonymous SNPs and validated and tested selected SNPs for their association with measured traits. RESULTS: Over 500,000 public bovine expressed sequence tagged (EST) sequences were used to search for coding SNPs (cSNPs). A total of 15,353 SNPs were detected in the transcribed sequences studied, of which 6,325 were predicted to be coding SNPs with the remaining 9,028 SNPs presumed to be in untranslated regions. Of the cSNPs detected, 2,868 were predicted to result in a change in the amino acid encoded. In order to determine the actual number of non-synonymous polymorphic SNPs we designed assays for 920 of the putative SNPs. These SNPs were then genotyped through a panel of cattle DNA pools using chip-based MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Of the SNPs tested, 29% were found to be polymorphic with a minor allele frequency >10%. A subset of the SNPs was genotyped through animal resources in order to look for association with age of puberty, facial eczema resistance or meat yield. Three SNPs were nominally associated with resistance to the disease facial eczema (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: We have identified 15,353 putative SNPs in or close to bovine genes and 2,868 of these SNPs were predicted to be non-synonymous. Approximately 29% of the non-synonymous SNPs were polymorphic and common with a minor allele frequency >10%. Of the SNPs detected in this study, 99% have not been previously reported. These novel SNPs will be useful for association studies or gene mapping

    Structural neuroimaging correlates of allelic variation of the BDNF val66met polymorphism.

    BACKGROUND: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) val66met polymorphism is associated with altered activity dependent secretion of BDNF and a variable influence on brain morphology and cognition. Although a met-dose effect is generally assumed, to date the paucity of met-homozygotes have limited our understanding of the role of the met-allele on brain structure. METHODS: To investigate this phenomenon, we recruited sixty normal healthy subjects, twenty in each genotypic group (val/val, val/met and met/met). Global and local morphology were assessed using voxel based morphometry and surface reconstruction methods. White matter organisation was also investigated using tract-based spatial statistics and constrained spherical deconvolution tractography. RESULTS: Morphological analysis revealed an "inverted-U" shaped profile of cortical changes, with val/met heterozygotes most different relative to the two homozygous groups. These results were evident at a global and local level as well as in tractography analysis of white matter fibre bundles. CONCLUSION: In contrast to our expectations, we found no evidence of a linear met-dose effect on brain structure, rather our results support the view that the heterozygotic BDNF val66met genotype is associated with cortical morphology that is more distinct from the BDNF val66met homozygotes. These results may prove significant in furthering our understanding of the role of the BDNF met-allele in disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and depression

    Microvawe pyrolysis of biomass: control of process parameters for high pyrolysis oil yields and enhanced oil quality

    The oil yield and quality of pyrolysis oil from microwave heating of biomass was established by studying the behaviour of Larch in microwave processing. This is the first study in biomass pyrolysis to use a microwave processing technique and methodology that is fundamentally scalable, from which the basis of design for a continuous processing system can be derived to maximise oil yield and quality. It is shown systematically that sample size is a vital parameter that has been overlooked by previous work in this field. When sample size is controlled the liquid product yield is comparable to conventional pyrolysis, and can be achieved at an energy input of around 600 kWh/t. The quality of the liquid product is significantly improved compared to conventional pyrolysis processes, which results from the very rapid heating and quenching that can be achieved with microwave processing. The yields of Levoglucosan and phenolic compounds were found to be an order of magnitude higher in microwave pyrolysis when compared with conventional fast pyrolysis. Geometry is a key consideration for the development of a process at scale, and the opportunities and challenges for scale-up are discussed within this paper

    New Horizons in the use of routine data for ageing research

    The past three decades have seen a steady increase in the availability of routinely collected health and social care data and the processing power to analyse it. These developments represent a major opportunity for ageing research, especially with the integration of different datasets across traditional boundaries of health and social care, for prognostic research and novel evaluations of interventions with representative populations of older people. However, there are considerable challenges in using routine data at the level of coding, data analysis and in the application of findings to everyday care. New Horizons in applying routine data to investigate novel questions in ageing research require a collaborative approach between clinicians, data scientists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists and trial methodologists. This requires building capacity for the next generation of research leaders in this important area. There is a need to develop consensus code lists and standardised, validated algorithms for common conditions and outcomes that are relevant for older people to maximise the potential of routine data research in this group. Lastly, we must help drive the application of routine data to improve the care of older people, through the development of novel methods for evaluation of interventions using routine data infrastructure. We believe that harnessing routine data can help address knowledge gaps for older people living with multiple conditions and frailty, and design interventions and pathways of care to address the complex health issues we face in caring for older people
