    On the Relationship between the Uniqueness of the Moonshine Module and Monstrous Moonshine

    We consider the relationship between the conjectured uniqueness of the Moonshine Module, Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural, and Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero property of the modular invariance group for each Monster group Thompson series. We first discuss a family of possible ZnZ_n meromorphic orbifold constructions of Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural based on automorphisms of the Leech lattice compactified bosonic string. We reproduce the Thompson series for all 51 non-Fricke classes of the Monster group MM together with a new relationship between the centralisers of these classes and 51 corresponding Conway group centralisers (generalising a well-known relationship for 5 such classes). Assuming that Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural is unique, we then consider meromorphic orbifoldings of Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural and show that Monstrous Moonshine holds if and only if the only meromorphic orbifoldings of Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural give Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural itself or the Leech theory. This constraint on the meromorphic orbifoldings of Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural therefore relates Monstrous Moonshine to the uniqueness of Vâ™®{\cal V}^\natural in a new way.Comment: 53 pages, PlainTex, DIAS-STP-93-0

    Finitely presented wreath products and double coset decompositions

    We characterize which permutational wreath products W^(X)\rtimes G are finitely presented. This occurs if and only if G and W are finitely presented, G acts on X with finitely generated stabilizers, and with finitely many orbits on the cartesian square X^2. On the one hand, this extends a result of G. Baumslag about standard wreath products; on the other hand, this provides nontrivial examples of finitely presented groups. For instance, we obtain two quasi-isometric finitely presented groups, one of which is torsion-free and the other has an infinite torsion subgroup. Motivated by the characterization above, we discuss the following question: which finitely generated groups can have a finitely generated subgroup with finitely many double cosets?     Search for Duality Symmetries in p-Brane Theories

    The requirement of an SL(2)SL(2) duality symmetry, mixing the worldvolume field equations with Bianchi identities, leads to a highly nonlinear equation involving the transformation parameters and certain worldvolume currents. In general, this equation seems to admit a solution only for a two parameter subgroup of the seeked SL(2)SL(2). These transformations also leave invariant the first class constraints generating the worldvolume reparametrizations.     Renormalization approach for quantum-dot structures under strong alternating fields

    We develop a renormalization method for calculating the electronic structure of single and double quantum dots under intense ac fields. The nanostructures are emulated by lattice models with a clear continuum limit of the effective-mass and single-particle approximations. The coupling to the ac field is treated non-perturbatively by means of the Floquet Hamiltonian. The renormalization approach allows the study of dressed states of the nanoscopic system with realistic geometries as well arbitrary strong ac fields. We give examples of a single quantum dot, emphasizing the analysis of the effective-mass limit for lattice models, and double-dot structures, where we discuss the limit of the well used two-level approximation.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    The impact of the 2014 platinum mining strike in South Africa : an economy-wide analysis

    In this paper we measure the economy-wide impact of the 2014 labour strike in South Africa's platinum industry. The strike lasted 5 months, ending in June 2014 when producers reached an agreement with the main labour unions. The immediate impacts on local mining towns were particularly severe, but our research shows that the strike could also have long lasting negative impacts on the South African economy as a whole. We find that it is not the higher nominal wages itself that caused the most damage, but the possible reaction by investors in the mining industry towards South Africa. Investor confidence is likely to be, at least, temporarily harmed, in which case it would take many years for the effects of the strike to disappear.We conduct our analysis using a dynamic CGE model of South Africa.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/ecmod2016-12-31hb201

    Electronic structure of nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum dots

    We study a system in which electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas are confined by a nonhomogeneous nuclear spin polarization. The system consists of a heterostructure that has non-zero nuclei spins. We show that in this system electrons can be confined into a dot region through a local nuclear spin polarization. The nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum dot has interesting properties indicating that electron energy levels are time-dependent because of the nuclear spin relaxation and diffusion processes. Electron confining potential is a solution of diffusion equation with relaxation. Experimental investigations of the time-dependence of electron energy levels will result in more information about nuclear spin interactions in solids

    Steiner t-designs for large t

    One of the most central and long-standing open questions in combinatorial design theory concerns the existence of Steiner t-designs for large values of t. Although in his classical 1987 paper, L. Teirlinck has shown that non-trivial t-designs exist for all values of t, no non-trivial Steiner t-design with t > 5 has been constructed until now. Understandingly, the case t = 6 has received considerable attention. There has been recent progress concerning the existence of highly symmetric Steiner 6-designs: It is shown in [M. Huber, J. Algebr. Comb. 26 (2007), pp. 453-476] that no non-trivial flag-transitive Steiner 6-design can exist.     Spin, charge and orbital ordering in ferrimagnetic insulator YBaMn2_2O5_5

    The oxygen-deficient (double) perovskite YBaMn2_2O5_5, containing corner-linked MnO5_5 square pyramids, is found to exhibit ferrimagnetic ordering in its ground state. In the present work we report generalized-gradient-corrected, relativistic first-principles full-potential density-functional calculations performed on YBaMn2_2O5_5 in the nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic states. The charge, orbital and spin orderings are explained with site-, angular momentum- and orbital-projected density of states, charge-density plots, electronic structure and total energy studies. YBaMn2_2O5_5 is found to stabilize in a G-type ferrimagnetic state in accordance with experimental results. The experimentally observed insulating behavior appears only when we include ferrimagnetic ordering in our calculation. We observed significant optical anisotropy in this material originating from the combined effect of ferrimagnetic ordering and crystal field splitting. In order to gain knowledge about the presence of different valence states for Mn in YBaMn2_2O5_5 we have calculated KK-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectra for the Mn and O atoms. The presence of the different valence states for Mn is clearly established from the x-ray absorption near-edge spectra, hyperfine field parameters and the magnetic properties study. Among the experimentally proposed structures, the recently reported description based on PP4/nmmnmm is found to represent the stable structure
