Full-field structured-illumination super-resolution X-ray transmission microscopy
Modern transmission X-ray microscopy techniques provide very high resolution at low and medium X-ray energies, but suffer from a limited field-of-view. If sub-micrometre resolution is desired, their field-of-view is typically limited to less than one millimetre. Although the field-of-view increases through combining multiple images from adjacent regions of the specimen, so does the required data acquisition time. Here, we present a method for fast full-field super-resolution transmission microscopy by structured illumination of the specimen. This technique is well-suited even for hard X-ray energies above 30 keV, where efficient optics are hard to obtain. Accordingly, investigation of optically thick specimen becomes possible with our method combining a wide field-of-view spanning multiple millimetres, or even centimetres, with sub-micron resolution and hard X-ray energies
Charge state of vacancy defects in Eu-doped GaN
Eu ions have been doped into GaN in order to achieve red luminescence under current injection, where coupling between the Eu ions and intrinsic defects such as vacancies are known to play an important role. However, the charge state of the vacancies and the impact it would have on the optical and magnetic properties of the Eu ions have not been explored. Through a combination of first-principle calculations and experimental results, the influence of the charge state of the defect environment surrounding the Eu ions has been investigated. We have identified two Eu centers that are related through the charge state of a local vacancy defect. These two centers were found to exhibit a mutual metastability, such that each center can be excited in one configuration and emit as the other. This metastability was found to be dependent on temperature and the wavelength of the excitation laser. Furthermore, one of these centers was found to have an effective magnetic g factor that is substantially larger than what is expected for an isolated Eu3+ ion and is explained by a change in the charge state of the defect environment around the Eu. This prediction could also offer a new explanation for the saturation magnetization previously observed in GaN : Eu and other GaN: RE systems.112Ysciescopu

Impact of the tip radius on the lateral resolution in piezoresponse force microscopy
We present a quantitative investigation of the impact of tip radius as well
as sample type and thickness on the lateral resolution in piezoresponse force
microscopy (PFM) investigating bulk single crystals. The observed linear
dependence of the width of the domain wall on the tip radius as well as the
independence of the lateral resolution on the specific crystal-type are
validated by a simple theoretical model. Using a Ti-Pt-coated tip with a
nominal radius of 15 nm the so far highest lateral resolution in bulk crystals
of only 17 nm was obtained
Ptychographic X-ray nanotomography quantifies mineral distributions in human dentine
Bones are bio-composites with biologically tunable mechanical properties,
where a polymer matrix of nanofibrillar collagen is reinforced by apatite
mineral crystals. Some bones, such as antler, form and change rapidly, while
other bone tissues, such as human tooth dentine, develop slowly and maintain
constant composition and architecture for entire lifetimes. When studying
apatite mineral microarchitecture, mineral distributions or mineralization
activity of bone-forming cells, representative samples of tissue are best
studied at submicrometre resolution while minimizing sample-preparation
damage. Here, we demonstrate the power of ptychographic X-ray tomography to
map variations in the mineral content distribution in three dimensions and at
the nanometre scale. Using this non-destructive method, we observe
nanostructures surrounding hollow tracts that exist in human dentine forming
dentinal tubules. We reveal unprecedented quantitative details of the
ultrastructure clearly revealing the spatially varying mineralization density.
Such information is essential for understanding a variety of natural and
therapeutic effects for example in bone tissue healing and ageing
Convergence of arithmetic means of operators in Fréchet spaces
Every Köthe echelon Fréchet space XX that is Montel and not isomorphic to a countable product of copies of the scalar field admits a power bounded continuous linear operator TT such that I−TI−T does not have closed range, but the sequence of arithmetic means of the iterates of TT converges to 0 uniformly on the bounded sets in XX. On the other hand, if XX is a Fréchet space which does not have a quotient isomorphic to a nuclear Köthe echelon space with a continuous norm, then the sequence of arithmetic means of the iterates of any continuous linear operator TT (for which (1/n)Tn(1/n)Tn converges to 0 on the bounded sets) converges uniformly on the bounded subsets of XX, i.e., TT is uniformly mean ergodic, if and only if the range of I−TI−T is closed. This result extends a theorem due to Lin for such operators on Banach spaces. The connection of Browder’s equality for power bounded operators on Fréchet spaces to their uniform mean ergodicity is exposed. An analysis of the mean ergodic properties of the classical Cesàro operator on Banach sequence spaces is also given. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Spectroscopic investigations of a Ti:Tm:LiNbO3 waveguide for photon-echo quantum memory
We report the fabrication and characterization of a
Ti:Tm:LiNbO optical waveguide in view of photon-echo quantum
memory applications. In particular, we investigated room- and
cryogenic-temperature properties via absorption, spectral hole burning, photon
echo, and Stark spectroscopy. We found radiative lifetimes of 82 s and 2.4
ms for the H and F levels, respectively, and a 44% branching
ratio from the H to the F level. We also measured an optical
coherence time of 1.6 s for the HH, 795 nm
wavelength transition, and investigated the limitation of spectral diffusion to
spectral hole burning. Upon application of magnetic fields of a few hundred
Gauss, we observed persistent spectral holes with lifetimes up to seconds.
Furthermore, we measured a linear Stark shift of 25 kHzcm/V. Our results
are promising for integrated, electro-optical, waveguide quantum memory for
photons.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure
Multi-slice ptychographic tomography
Ptychography is a form of Coherent Diffractive Imaging, where diffraction patterns are processed by iterative algorithms to recover an image of a specimen. Although mostly applied in two dimensions, ptychography can be extended to produce three dimensional images in two ways: via multi-slice ptychography or ptychographic tomography. Ptychographic tomography relies on 2D ptychography to supply projections to conventional tomographic algorithms, whilst multi-slice ptychography uses the redundancy in ptychographic data to split the reconstruction into a series of axial slices. Whilst multi-slice ptychography can handle multiple-scattering thick specimens and has a much smaller data requirement than ptychographic tomography, its depth resolution is relatively poor. Here we propose an imaging modality that combines the benefits of the two approaches, enabling isotropic 3D resolution imaging of thick specimens with a small number of angular measurements. Optical experiments validate our proposed method
On the continuous Cesàro operator in certain function spaces
“The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11117-014-0321-5"Various properties of the (continuous) Cesàro operator C, acting on Banach
and Fréchet spaces of continuous functions and L p-spaces, are investigated. For
instance, the spectrum and point spectrum of C are completely determined and a
study of certain dynamics of C is undertaken (eg. hyper- and supercyclicity, chaotic
behaviour). In addition, the mean (and uniform mean) ergodic nature of C acting in
the various spaces is identified. The research of the first two authors was partially supported by the projects MTM2010-15200 and GVA Prometeo II/2013/013 (Spain).
