Lessons from the operation of the "Penning-Fluorescent" TPC and prospects
We have recently reported the development of a new type of high-pressure
Xenon time projection chamber operated with an ultra-low diffusion mixture and
that simultaneously displays Penning effect and fluorescence in the
near-visible region (300 nm). The concept, dubbed `Penning-Fluorescent' TPC,
allows the simultaneous reconstruction of primary charge and scintillation with
high topological and calorimetric fidelity
Magnetic domain wall curvature induced by wire edge pinning
open14In this study, we report on the analysis of the magnetic domain wall (DW) curvature due to magnetic field induced motion in Ta/CoFeB/MgO and Pt/Co/Pt wires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In wires of 20 mu m and 25 mu m, a large edge pinning potential produces the anchoring of the DW ends to the wire edges, which is evidenced as a significant curvature of the DW front as it propagates. As the driving magnetic field is increased, the curvature reduces as a result of the system moving away from the creep regime of DW motion, which implies a weaker dependence of the DW dynamics on the interaction between the DW and the wire edge defects. A simple model is derived to describe the dependence of the DW curvature on the driving magnetic field and allows us to extract the parameter sigma (E), which accounts for the strength of the edge pinning potential. The model describes well the systems with both weak and strong bulk pinning potentials like Ta/CoFeB/MgO and Pt/Co/Pt, respectively. Wire edge dependent magnetic domain wall creep
open13While edge pinning is known to play an important role in sub-μm wires, we demonstrate that strong deviations
from the universal creep law can occur in 1 to 20 μm wide wires. Magnetic imaging shows that edge pinning
translates into a marked bending of domain walls at low drive and is found to depend on the wire fabrication
process and aging. Edge pinning introduces a reduction of domain wall velocity with respect to full films which
increasingly dominates the creep dynamics as the wire width decreases. We show that the deviations from the
creep law can be described by a simple model including a counter magnetic field which links the width of the
wire to the edge dependent pinning strength. This counter field defines a key nonuniversal contribution to creep

Mass hierarchy, mass gap and corrections to Newton's law on thick branes with Poincare symmetry
We consider a scalar thick brane configuration arising in a 5D theory of
gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field in a Riemannian manifold. We
start from known classical solutions of the corresponding field equations and
elaborate on the physics of the transverse traceless modes of linear
fluctuations of the classical background, which obey a Schroedinger-like
equation. We further consider two special cases in which this equation can be
solved analytically for any massive mode with m^2>0, in contrast with numerical
approaches, allowing us to study in closed form the massive spectrum of
Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations and to compute the corrections to Newton's law in
the thin brane limit. In the first case we consider a solution with a mass gap
in the spectrum of KK fluctuations with two bound states - the massless 4D
graviton free of tachyonic instabilities and a massive KK excitation - as well
as a tower of continuous massive KK modes which obey a Legendre equation. The
mass gap is defined by the inverse of the brane thickness, allowing us to get
rid of the potentially dangerous multiplicity of arbitrarily light KK modes. It
is shown that due to this lucky circumstance, the solution of the mass
hierarchy problem is much simpler and transparent than in the (thin)
Randall-Sundrum (RS) two-brane configuration. In the second case we present a
smooth version of the RS model with a single massless bound state, which
accounts for the 4D graviton, and a sector of continuous fluctuation modes with
no mass gap, which obey a confluent Heun equation in the Ince limit. (The
latter seems to have physical applications for the first time within braneworld
models). For this solution the mass hierarchy problem is solved as in the

Micromegas-TPC operation at high pressure in Xenon-trimethylamine mixtures
We present in this work measurements performed with a small Micromegas-TPC
using a xenon-trimethylamine (Xe-TMA) Penning-mixture as filling gas.
Measurements of gas gain and energy resolutions for 22.1 keV X-rays are
presented, spanning several TMA concentrations and pressures between 1 and 10
bar. Across this pressure range, the best energy resolution and largest
increase in gain at constant field (a standard figure for characterizing
Penning-like energy transfers) is observed to be in the 1.5%-2.5% TMA region. A
gain increase (at constant field) up to a factor 100 and a best energy
resolution improved by up to a factor 3 with respect to the one previously
reported in pure Xe -operated Micromegas, can be obtained. In virtue of the
VUV-quenching properties of the mixture, the overall maximum gain achievable is
also notably increased (up to 400 at 10bar), a factor x 3 higher than in pure
Xe. In addition, preliminary measurements of the electron drift velocity in a
modified setup have been performed and show good agreement with the one
obtained from Magboltz. These results are of great interest for calorimetric
applications in gas Xe TPCs, in particular for the search of the neutrino-less

CD98hc facilitates B cell proliferation and adaptive humoral immunity.
The proliferation of antigen-specific lymphocytes and resulting clonal expansion are essential for adaptive immunity. We report here that B cell-specific deletion of the heavy chain of CD98 (CD98hc) resulted in lower antibody responses due to total suppression of B cell proliferation and subsequent plasma cell formation. Deletion of CD98hc did not impair early B cell activation but did inhibit later activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase Erk1/2 and downregulation of the cell cycle inhibitor p27. Reconstitution of CD98hc-deficient B cells with CD98hc mutants showed that the integrin-binding domain of CD98hc was required for B cell proliferation but that the amino acid-transport function of CD98hc was dispensable for this. Thus, CD98hc supports integrin-dependent rapid proliferation of B cells. We propose that the advantage of adaptive immunity favored the appearance of CD98hc in vertebrates
A Functional Assessment Tool to Distinguish Controls From Alzheimer’s Disease in Lima, Peru
Background The Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living (ADCS-ADL) scale is a versatile functional assessment tool for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We evaluated its performance in controls, Peruvians with MCI or AD. Methods A cross-sectional study of older adults attending a neurology institute in Lima (Peru) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), ad or cognitively healthy. Test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC; internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha) and validity were assessed. Results We enrolled 276 individuals (AD: 113, MCI: 68, controls: 95) with no age, sex, educational level, and depressive symptom differences. Reliability was ideal (ICC: .996), and Cronbach's alpha was adequate (.937). The ADCS-ADL could not differentiate MCI from controls but did differentiate AD severity. The ADCS-ADL correlated highly with nearly all tools. Conclusions The ADCS-ADL scale is reliable in a population with AD in Lima, Peru. Future work may validate a tool for Peruvians with lower educational levels
Milieu effects on the Dark Triad traits and their sex differences in 49 countries
Most research on the development of personality traits like the Dark Triad (i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) focuses on local effects like parenting style or attachment, but people live in a larger society that may set the stage for any local effects. Here we paired nation-level data on the traits from 49 nations with several milieu indicators (e.g., life expectancy, homicide rates) from three timepoints (and change among them) where the average participant (≈ 22yo) would have been a child (≈ 6yo), a pre-teen (≈ 11yo), and a teenager (≈ 16yo). Congruent with previous research, variance in narcissism was far more sensitive to variance in milieu conditions in general and across all three time points than variance in Machiavellianism or psychopathy. The milieu conditions differentiated the traits somewhat with income and education revealing negative correlations with narcissism, positive correlations with Machiavellianism, and null correlations with psychopathy. Sex differences in Machiavellianism and narcissism were correlated with homicide rates across the three timepoints. The evidence that changes in milieu conditions in ones' past predicts the traits was erratic, but larger sex differences in the traits were associated with decreased life expectancies and homicide rates between childhood and pre-teens.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
An Overview of the 2014 ALMA Long Baseline Campaign
A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to
make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at
submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop
and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from
September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations,
calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This
paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an
investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase
errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets
and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long
baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also
compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few
percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly
successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as
19 mas at ~350 GHz. Observing with ALMA on baselines of up to 15 km is now
