    Postponement of dark-count effects in practical quantum key-distribution by two-way post-processing

    The influence of imperfections on achievable secret-key generation rates of quantum key distribution protocols is investigated. As examples of relevant imperfections, we consider tagging of Alice's qubits and dark counts at Bob's detectors, while we focus on a powerful eavesdropping strategy which takes full advantage of tagged signals. It is demonstrated that error correction and privacy amplification based on a combination of a two-way classical communication protocol and asymmetric Calderbank-Shor-Steane codes may significantly postpone the disastrous influence of dark counts. As a result, the distances are increased considerably over which a secret key can be distributed in optical fibres reliably.     CO Observations of the Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 5394/95

    BIMA CO 1-0 observations are presented of the spiral galaxies NGC 5394 and NGC 5395 that have undergone a recent, grazing encounter. In NGC 5394, 80% of the CO emission detected by BIMA is concentrated in the central 800 pc (FWHM) starburst region.In an encounter simulation that reproduces some of the main features of this galaxy pair, a considerable amount of gas in NGC 5394 falls into the central region early in the collision. The observed total gas distribution in the disk of NGC 5394 is lopsided, with more HI, CO, and H-alpha emission coming from the western or southwestern side. The innermost western arm of NGC 5394 is seen in CO and H-alpha emission, but the eastern inner-disk arm, which is very bright in the optical continuum, is not detected in CO or H-alpha emission. From a comparison of the radio continuum, H-alpha, 60 micron, and CO luminosities, we estimate that the average visual extinction of the starburst is 3 - 4 mag and the conversion factor N(H2)/I(CO) in the starburst is a factor of 3 - 4 below the standard value. Comparison of NGC 5394 with two other systems previously studied suggests that in prograde grazing encounters a central starburst may not develop until near the end of the ocular phase.     Mass and ionic composition of atmospheric fine particles over Belgium and their relation with gaseous air pollutants

DOI: 10.1039/b805157gMass, major ionic components (MICs) of PM2.5, and related gaseous pollutants (SO2, NOx, NH3, HNO2, and HNO3) were monitored over six locations of different anthropogenic influence (industrial, urban, suburban, and rural) in Belgium. SO42-, NO3- NH4+, and Na+ were the primary ions of PM2.5 with averages diurnal concentrations ranging from 0.4-4.5, 0.3-7.6, 0.9-4.9, and 0.4-1.2 g/m3, respectively. MICs formed 39% of PM2.5 on an average, but it could reach up to 80-98 %. The SO2, NO, NO2, HNO2, and HNO3 levels showed high seasonal and site-specific fluctuations. The NH3 levels were similar over all the sites (2-6 g/m3), indicating its relation to the evenly distributed animal husbandry activities. The sulfur and nitrogen oxidation ratios for PM2.5 point towards a low-to-moderate formation of secondary sulfate and nitrate aerosols over five cities/towns, but their fairly intensive formation at the rural Wingene. Cluster analysis revealed the association of three groups of compounds in PM2.5; (i) NH4NO3, KNO3; (ii) Na2SO4; and (iii) MgCl2, CaCl2, MgF2, CaF2, corresponding to anthropogenic, sea-salt, and mixed (sea-salt + anthropogenic) aerosols, respectively. The neutralization and cation-to-anion ratios indicate that MICs of PM2.5 appeared mostly as (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 salts. Sea-salt input was maximal during winter reaching up to 12 % of PM2.5. The overall average Cl-loss for sea-salt particles of PM2.5 at the six sites varied between 69 and 96 % with an average of 87 %.     BACKGROUND & AIMS Tight junctions in the liver are essential to maintain the blood-biliary-barrier, however the functional contribution of individual tight junction proteins to barrier- and metabolic homeostasis remains largely unexplored. Here, we describe the cell type specific expression of tight junction genes in the murine liver, and explore the regulation and functional importance of the transmembrane protein claudin-3 in liver metabolism, barrier function and cell proliferation. METHODS The cell type specific expression of hepatic tight junction genes is described using our mouse liver single cell sequencing dataset. Differential gene expression in Cldn3-/- and Cldn3+/+ livers was assessed in young and aged mice by RNA-seq and hepatic tissue was analysed for lipid content and bile acid composition. A surgical model of partial hepatectomy (PHx) was used to induce liver cell proliferation. RESULTS Claudin-3 is a highly expressed tight junction protein found in the liver and is expressed predominantly in hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. The histology of Cldn3-/- livers showed no overt phenotype, and the canalicular tight junctions appeared intact. Nevertheless, by RNAseq we detected a downregulation of metabolic pathways in the livers of Cldn3-/- young and aged mice as well as a decrease in lipid content and a weakened biliary-barrier for primary bile acids, such as TCA, TCDCA and TMCA. Coinciding with defects in the biliary barrier and lower lipid metabolism, there was a diminished hepatocyte proliferative response in Cldn3-/- mice following PHx. CONCLUSION Our data shows that in the liver, claudin-3 is necessary to maintain metabolic homeostasis, retention of bile acids, and optimal hepatocyte proliferation during liver regeneration

    International audienceSystems medicine is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates data from basic research and clinical practice to improve our understanding and treatment of diseases. Systems medicine can be seen as a further development of systems biology and bioinformatics towards applica-tions of clinical relevance. The term 'systems' refers to systems approaches, emphasizing a close integration of data generation with mathematical modeling [1-3]. The (mal)functioning of the human body is a complex process, characterized by multiple interactions between systems that act across multiple levels of structural and functional organization -from molecular reactions to cell-cell interac-tions in tissues to the physiology of organs and organ systems. Over the past decade, we have gained detailed insights into the structure and function of molecular, cellu-lar and organ-level systems, with technologies playing an important role in the generation of data at these different scales

    Deformation analysis of a metropolis from C- to X-band PSI: proof-of-concept with Cosmo-Skymed over Rome, Italy

    Stability of monuments and subsidence of residential quarters in Rome (Italy) are depicted based on geospatial analysis of more than 310,000 Persistent Scatterers (PS) obtained from Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS) processing of 32 COSMO-SkyMed 3m-resolution HH StripMap ascending mode scenes acquired between 21 March 2011 and 10 June 2013. COSMO-SkyMed PS densities and associated displacement velocities are compared with almost 20 years of historical C-band ERS- 1/2, ENVISAT and RADARSAT-1/2 imagery. Accounting for differences in image processing algorithms and satellite acquisition geometries, we assess the feasibility of ground motion monitoring in big cities and metropolitan areas by coupling newly acquired and legacy SAR in full time series. Limitations and operational benefits of the transition from medium resolution C-band to high resolution X-band PS data are discussed, alongside the potential impact on the management of expanding urban environments
