On p-Compact Sets in Classical Banach Spaces

    Get PDF
Given p ≥ 1, we denote by Cp the class of all Banach spaces X satisfying the equality Kp(Y,X) = Πdp(Y,X) for every Banach space Y , Kp (respectively, Πdp ) being the operator ideal of p-compact operators (respectively, of operators with p-summing adjoint). If X belongs to Cp, a bounded set A ⊂ X is relatively p-compact if and only if the evaluation map U∗ A : X∗ −→ ∞(A) is p-summing. We obtain p-compactness criteria valid for Banach spaces in Cp

The Reception of the Codeswitchings of the Syriac Versions in the Gospel of Mark

    Get PDF
The Gospel of Mark contains numerous loanwords and code switches from Aramaic to Greek. These borrowed terms were not unconscious and developed important social, literary and narrative functions in key passages of the Gospel. This article considers how the Old Syriac versions and the Peshitta have treated these borrowed terms given that the translators were native Aramaic speakers and how the functions developed by these borrowed terms have been altered due to the translation process

Does immigrant diversity affect productivity? The Spanish experience

    Get PDF
Treball Final de Grau en Economia. Codi: EC1049. Curs acadèmic: 2017/2018The consequences of the massive waves of migration in recent years have attracted a growing amount of attention in the field of economics. Traditionally, concern over this matter has focused on the possible effects of replacing more expensive native workers with a cheaper workforce made up of immigrants. However, recent literature points out that this evaluation may be incomplete, as it ignores the potential benefits derived from a greater cultural diversity related to immigration. The aim of this work is to analyse the impact of migration diversity on productivity at a regional level for the specific case of Spain. To do so, we have based our research on three different diversity indexes, as proposed by Kemeny and Cooke (2018) and Alesina et al. (2003). The model is estimated by using instrumental variables techniques taking into account the potential simultaneity between migration diversity and productivity. The results confirm the positive influence of a greater diversity of immigrants’ birthplaces on workers’ productivity in Spain. Our findings reveal that a higher rate of young and skilled labour also encourages productivity

Study of the Acidification of Sherry Musts With Gypsum and Tartaric Acid

    Get PDF
Must acidification is a necessary operation in hot regions due to the low natural acid content of the grapes grown there. Tartaric acid is what is most usually used for this purpose. Using gypsum (CaSO 4 • 2H20 ) allows the amount of tartaric acid needed to reach a given pH to be reduced. This paper is a study of the acidification of musts produced in Sherry area (Southern Spain) to a pH of 3.25 with tartaric acid alone and tartaric acid acting together with 2 g/L of gypsum. Using gypsum causes a reduction in must pH of approximately 0.2 units and allows the tartaric acid dosage to be cut down by 1.5 to 2.5 g/L. The concentration of sulfates in the fermented wine lies below 2.5 g/L (the maximum authorized by the European Community), and the calcium concentration is 130 mg/L. Both levels are compatible with a correct winemaking. The acid buffering power of the wine and the alkalinity of the ash are reduced by the use of gypsum, which makes later acidification easier. Other wine component levels are not affected

The U.S. Public Diplomacy. A Historical Review

    Get PDF
America’s self-portrait as a beacon of freedom, progress, and modernization is central to understand her interaction with the rest of the world. The country’s messianic impulse has shaped the foreign cultural action of U.S. private and public institutions alike. This article will explore the development of U.S. cultural relations and public diplomacy, which reached its zenith in the Cold War. Among other things, the article will look at the diverse issues that explain the evolution from “cultural diplomacy” to “public diplomacy”. It will also offer a tentative account of the historiography in the field

Peer feedback and out-of-class blogging to develop informal writing skills in an EFL course

    Combining linear and nonlinear diffusion

    Get PDF
In this paper we study a generalized porous medium equation where the diffusion rate, say m(x) —spatially heterogeneous—, is assumed to be linear, m = 1, on a piece of the support domain, Ω1, and slow nonlinear, m(x) > 1, in its complement, Ωm := Ω \ Ω¯1. Most precisely, we characterize the existence of positive solutions and construct the corresponding global bifurcation diagram as one of the parameters of the model changes, showing that a continuous transition occurs between the diagrams of the completely linear case (Ω = Ω1) and of the completely nonlinear case (Ωm = Ω). As a result, the effect of a localized slow diffusion rate with varying support is completely characterized. Our analysis is imperative in order to design porous media multi-components systems with changing diffusion rates.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnologí
