âA long-term mortality analysis of subsidized firms in rural areas: an empirical study in the Portuguese Alentejo regionâ
Studies have demonstrated that public policies to support private firmsâ investment have the ability to promote entrepreneurship, but the sustainability of subsidized firms has not often been analysed. This paper aims to examine this dimension specifically through evaluating the mortality of subsidized firms in the long-term. The analysis focuses on a case study of the LEADER+ Programme in the Alentejo region of Portugal. With this purpose, the paper examines the activity status (active or not active) of 154 private, rural, for-profit firms in Alentejo that had received a subsidy to support investment between 2002 and 2008 under the LEADER+ Programme. The methodology is based on binary choice models in order to study the probability of these firms still being active. The explanatory variables used are the following: (1) the characteristics of entrepreneurs and managersâ strategic decisions, (2) firm profile and characteristics, (3) regional economic environment. Data assessment showed that the cumulative mortality rate of firms on 31st December 2013 is over 20 %. Interpretation of the regression model revealed that he probability of firmsâ survival increases with higher investment, firm age and regional business concentration, whereas the number of applications made by firms has a negative impact on their survival. So it seems that for subsidized firms the amount of investment is as important as its frequency
The brightest gamma-ray flaring blazar in the sky: AGILE and multi-wavelength observations of 3C 454.3 during November 2010
Since 2005, the blazar 3C 454.3 has shown remarkable flaring activity at all
frequencies, and during the last four years it has exhibited more than one
gamma-ray flare per year, becoming the most active gamma-ray blazar in the sky.
We present for the first time the multi-wavelength AGILE, SWIFT, INTEGRAL, and
GASP-WEBT data collected in order to explain the extraordinary gamma-ray flare
of 3C 454.3 which occurred in November 2010. On 2010 November 20 (MJD 55520),
3C 454.3 reached a peak flux (E>100 MeV) of F_gamma(p) = (6.8+-1.0)E-5 ph/cm2/s
on a time scale of about 12 hours, more than a factor of 6 higher than the flux
of the brightest steady gamma-ray source, the Vela pulsar, and more than a
factor of 3 brighter than its previous super-flare on 2009 December 2-3. The
multi-wavelength data make a thorough study of the present event possible: the
comparison with the previous outbursts indicates a close similarity to the one
that occurred in 2009. By comparing the broadband emission before, during, and
after the gamma-ray flare, we find that the radio, optical and X-ray emission
varies within a factor 2-3, whereas the gamma-ray flux by a factor of 10. This
remarkable behavior is modeled by an external Compton component driven by a

Multiwavelength observations of 3C 454.3. III. Eighteen months of AGILE monitoring of the "Crazy Diamond"
We report on 18 months of multiwavelength observations of the blazar 3C 454.3
(Crazy Diamond) carried out in July 2007-January 2009. We show the results of
the AGILE campaigns which took place on May-June 2008, July-August 2008, and
October 2008-January 2009. During the May 2008-January 2009 period, the source
average flux was highly variable, from an average gamma-ray flux F(E>100MeV) >
200E-8 ph/cm2/s in May-June 2008, to F(E>100MeV)~80E-8 ph/cm2/s in October
2008-January 2009. The average gamma-ray spectrum between 100 MeV and 1 GeV can
be fit by a simple power law (Gamma_GRID ~ 2.0 to 2.2). Only 3-sigma upper
limits can be derived in the 20-60 keV energy band with Super-AGILE. During
July-August 2007 and May-June 2008, RXTE measured a flux of F(3-20 keV)=
8.4E-11 erg/cm2/s, and F(3-20 keV)=4.5E-11 erg/cm2/s, respectively and a
constant photon index Gamma_PCA=1.65. Swift/XRT observations were carried out
during all AGILE campaigns, obtaining a F(2-10 keV)=(0.9-7.5)E-11 erg/cm2/s and
a photon index Gamma_XRT=1.33-2.04. BAT measured an average flux of ~5 mCrab.
GASP-WEBT monitored 3C 454.3 during the whole 2007-2008 period from the radio
to the optical. A correlation analysis between the optical and the gamma-ray
fluxes shows a time lag of tau=-0.4 days. An analysis of 15 GHz and 43 GHz VLBI
core radio flux observations shows an increasing trend of the core radio flux,
anti- correlated with the higher frequency data. The modeling SEDs, and the
behavior of the long-term light curves in different energy bands, allow us to
compare the jet properties during different emission states, and to study the

AGILE detection of extreme gamma-ray activity from the blazar PKS 1510-089 during March 2009. Multifrequency analysis
We report on the extreme gamma-ray activity from the FSRQ PKS 1510-089
observed by AGILE in March 2009. In the same period a radio-to-optical
monitoring of the source was provided by the GASP-WEBT and REM. Moreover,
several Swift ToO observations were triggered, adding important information on
the source behaviour from optical/UV to hard X-rays. We paid particular
attention to the calibration of the Swift/UVOT data to make it suitable to the
blazars spectra. Simultaneous observations from radio to gamma rays allowed us
to study in detail the correlation among the emission variability at different
frequencies and to investigate the mechanisms at work. In the period 9-30 March
2009, AGILE detected an average gamma-ray flux of (311+/-21)x10^-8 ph cm^-2
s^-1 for E>100 MeV, and a peak level of (702+/-131)x10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 on
daily integration. The gamma-ray activity occurred during a period of
increasing activity from near-IR to UV, with a flaring episode detected on
26-27 March 2009, suggesting that a single mechanism is responsible for the
flux enhancement observed from near-IR to UV. By contrast, Swift/XRT
observations seem to show no clear correlation of the X-ray fluxes with the
optical and gamma-ray ones. However, the X-ray observations show a harder
photon index (1.3-1.6) with respect to most FSRQs and a hint of
harder-when-brighter behaviour, indicating the possible presence of a second
emission component at soft X-ray energies. Moreover, the broad band spectrum
from radio-to-UV confirmed the evidence of thermal features in the optical/UV
spectrum of PKS 1510-089 also during high gamma-ray state. On the other hand,
during 25-26 March 2009 a flat spectrum in the optical/UV energy band was
observed, suggesting an important contribution of the synchrotron emission in
this part of the spectrum during the brightest gamma-ray flare, therefore a

Innovation and growth in the UK pharmaceuticals: the case of product and marketing introductions
New drug introductions are key to growth for pharmaceutical firms. However, not all innovations are the same and they may have differential effects that vary by firm size. We use quarterly sales data on UK pharmaceuticals in a dynamic panel model to estimate the impact of product (new drugs) and marketing (additional pack varieties) innovations within a therapeutic class on a firmâs business unit growth. We find that product innovations lead to substantial growth in both the short and long run, whereas a new pack variety only produces short-term effects. The strategies are substitutes but the marginal effects are larger for product innovations relative to additional packs, and the effects are larger for smaller business units. Nonetheless, pack introductions offer a viable short-term growth strategy, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses
The THESEUS space mission concept: science case, design and expected performances
THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5Âż1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3ÂżkeV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7Âżm class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift
10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late ¿20s/early ¿30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. The management of acute venous thromboembolism in clinical practice. Results from the European PREFER in VTE Registry
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe. Data from real-world registries are necessary, as clinical trials do not represent the full spectrum of VTE patients seen in clinical practice. We aimed to document the epidemiology, management and outcomes of VTE using data from a large, observational database. PREFER in VTE was an international, non-interventional disease registry conducted between January 2013 and July 2015 in primary and secondary care across seven European countries. Consecutive patients with acute VTE were documented and followed up over 12 months. PREFER in VTE included 3,455 patients with a mean age of 60.8 ± 17.0 years. Overall, 53.0 % were male. The majority of patients were assessed in the hospital setting as inpatients or outpatients (78.5 %). The diagnosis was deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in 59.5 % and pulmonary embolism (PE) in 40.5 %. The most common comorbidities were the various types of cardiovascular disease (excluding hypertension; 45.5 %), hypertension (42.3 %) and dyslipidaemia (21.1 %). Following the index VTE, a large proportion of patients received initial therapy with heparin (73.2 %), almost half received a vitamin K antagonist (48.7 %) and nearly a quarter received a DOAC (24.5 %). Almost a quarter of all presentations were for recurrent VTE, with >80 % of previous episodes having occurred more than 12 months prior to baseline. In conclusion, PREFER in VTE has provided contemporary insights into VTE patients and their real-world management, including their baseline characteristics, risk factors, disease history, symptoms and signs, initial therapy and outcomes
