A Blending of Purpose: The Juxtaposition of Functional and Aesthetic Qualities in Pots of Use.
This thesis supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition entitled A Blending of Purpose at East Tennessee State University, Carroll Reece Museum, Johnson City, Tennessee, November 4 – 22, 2004. It discusses the artist’s desire to create exceptionally crafted functional work which focuses on both compelling aesthetics and strong utilitarian considerations. Topics include the artistic validity of functional works, aesthetic and functional qualities, tactile sensation as a consideration, machine-made works versus hand-made works, a characteristic described as the Life Quality, and the piece’s completion in use.
The artist examines her influences including work ceramists Dan Finnegan, Nick Joerling and Ken Sedberry, as well as form and design elements found in the art and architecture of India.
Practical application in form and process of these ideas and influences is discussed

Validity and Wearability of Consumer-based Fitness Trackers in Free-living Children
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 471-482, 2019. Over the past decade wearable fitness trackers (WFTs) have grown in popularity with more recent versions able to capture the pulse rate noninvasively on the wrist of the wearer. Most of evidence on the validity of WFTs have explored adults in clinical settings. Thus, the purpose of this study is to 1) evaluate the validity of a wrist-placed WFT in determining heart rate, and 2) examine the wear compliance of a wrist-placed WFT, in children in free-living settings. In study 1, 19 children (5-12yrs) wore a Fitbit Charge HR© and a Polar chest strap heart rate (HR) monitor for 2 hours while performing sedentary-to-vigorous activities at a holiday camp in December 2016. In study 2, 20 children with mild developmental disabilities (8-13yrs) were asked to wear a Fitbit Alta HR© during summer 2017. In study 1, mean absolute percent difference between the WFT HR and criterion was 6.9%. Overall, \u3e75% of WFT HRs were within 5-10% of the criterion. Bland Altman plots indicated a moderate-to-high level of agreement between the WFT and criterion (mean difference 4.1%; Limits of Agreement 26.8, -18.5%). In study 2, participants had the device in their possession for 43 days (SD±14, range 14 – 56 days) and wore it on 67% of those days (range: 20 – 96%) for at least 10 hours/day. Preliminary evidence suggests that WFTs can provide comparable HR estimates to a criterion field-based measure and children can wear WFTs for extended monitoring periods in free-living settings

A Cool and Inflated Progenitor Candidate for the Type Ib Supernova 2019yvr at 2.6 Years Before Explosion
We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging of a pre-explosion counterpart to
SN 2019yvr obtained 2.6 years before its explosion as a type Ib supernova (SN
Ib). Aligning to a post-explosion Gemini-S/GSAOI image, we demonstrate that
there is a single source consistent with being the SN 2019yvr progenitor
system, the second SN Ib progenitor candidate after iPTF13bvn. We also analyzed
pre-explosion Spitzer/IRAC imaging, but we do not detect any counterparts at
the SN location. SN 2019yvr was highly reddened, and comparing its spectra and
photometry to those of other, less extinguished SNe Ib we derive
mag for SN 2019yvr. Correcting photometry
of the pre-explosion source for dust reddening, we determine that this source
is consistent with a and K star. This relatively cool photospheric
temperature implies a radius of 320, much larger
than expectations for SN Ib progenitor stars with trace amounts of hydrogen but
in agreement with previously identified SN IIb progenitor systems. The
photometry of the system is also consistent with binary star models that
undergo common envelope evolution, leading to a primary star hydrogen envelope
mass that is mostly depleted but seemingly in conflict with the SN Ib
classification of SN 2019yvr. SN 2019yvr had signatures of strong circumstellar
interaction in late-time (150 day) spectra and imaging, and so we consider
eruptive mass loss and common envelope evolution scenarios that explain the SN
Ib spectroscopic class, pre-explosion counterpart, and dense circumstellar
material. We also hypothesize that the apparent inflation could be caused by a
quasi-photosphere formed in an extended, low-density envelope or circumstellar

Nighttime chemical transformation in biomass burning plumes : A box model analysis initialized with aircraft observations
Biomass burning (BB) is a large source of reactive compounds in the atmosphere. While the daytime photochemistry of BB emissions has been studied in some detail, there has been little focus on nighttime reactions despite the potential for substantial oxidative and heterogeneous chemistry. Here, we present the first analysis of nighttime aircraft intercepts of agricultural BB plumes using observations from the NOAA WP-3D aircraft during the 2013 Southeast Nexus (SENEX) campaign. We use these observations in conjunction with detailed chemical box modeling to investigate the formation and fate of oxidants (NO3, N2O5, O3, and OH) and BB volatile organic compounds (BBVOCs), using emissions representative of agricultural burns (rice straw) and western wildfires (ponderosa pine). Field observations suggest NO3 production was approximately 1 ppbv hr–1, while NO3 and N2O5 were at or below 3 pptv, indicating rapid NO3/N2O5 reactivity. Model analysis shows that >99% of NO3/N2O5 loss is due to BBVOC + NO3 reactions rather than aerosol uptake of N2O5. Nighttime BBVOC oxidation for rice straw and ponderosa pine fires is dominated by NO3 (72, 53%, respectively) but O3 oxidation is significant (25, 43%), leading to roughly 55% overnight depletion of the most reactive BBVOCs and NO2
