Vorticity and magnetic shielding in a type-II superconductor

We study in detail, solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the magnetic field, supercurrent and order parameter profiles originated by a solenoid or magnetic whisker inserted in a type-II superconductor. We consider solutions of different vorticities, n, in the various cases. The results confirm the connection between the vorticity, the internal currents and the boundstates in a self-consistent way. The number of boundstates is given by the vorticity of the phase of the gap function as in the case with no external solenoid. In the limiting case of an infinitely thin solenoid, like a Dirac string, the solution is qualitatively different. The quasiparticle spectrum and wave functions are a function of n-n_ext, where n_ext is the vorticity of the solenoid. Making Transport Safer: V2V-Based Automated Emergency Braking System

An important goal in the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is to provide driving aids aimed at preventing accidents and reducing the number of traffic victims. The commonest traffic accidents in urban areas are due to sudden braking that demands a very fast response on the part of drivers. Attempts to solve this problem have motivated many ITS advances including the detection of the intention of surrounding cars using lasers, radars or cameras. However, this might not be enough to increase safety when there is a danger of collision. Vehicle to vehicle communications are needed to ensure that the other intentions of cars are also available. The article describes the development of a controller to perform an emergency stop via an electro-hydraulic braking system employed on dry asphalt. An original V2V communication scheme based on WiFi cards has been used for broadcasting positioning information to other vehicles. The reliability of the scheme has been theoretically analyzed to estimate its performance when the number of vehicles involved is much higher. This controller has been incorporated into the AUTOPIA program control for automatic cars. The system has been implemented in Citroën C3 Pluriel, and various tests were performed to evaluate its operation

Backwater curves and volumes in uniform rectangular channels

Mostra-se como, mediante uma exposição coerente e unificada, se podem deduzir as fórmulas — estabelecidas inicialmente pelo autor em 1963 e 1964 — que, na hipótese da constância do coeficiente de Chézy, permitem determinar, de modo teoricamente exacto, as curvas e os volumes de regolfo em canais uniformes de secção rectangular, de qualquer largura, e com rasante descendente, ascendente ou horizontal. On the monex solutions of backwater problems for uniform open channels

Paper written in partial fulfilment of the duties inherent to a sabbatical leave begun 16 September 1979 and ending 31 July 1980Começa-se por recordar o estabelecimento da forma mais geral até agora conhecida da equação de Bemoulli para o tratamento unidimensional das correntes líquidas permanentes, a maneira como dela se deduz a correspondente equação diferencial das curvas de regolfo em canais abertos uniformes e ainda o conceito de valores críticos do escoamento. Estabelecem-se em seguida fórmulas que, de um modo geral, permitem calcular curvas e volumes de regolfo nesses canais. Introduzido o conceito de solução monex dum problema de regolfo, mostra-se que fornecem soluções monex as secções transversais rectangular e parabólica larguíssimas, bem como a triangular. Examinada depois a questão da influência da fórmula de movimento uniforme escolhida, indica-se como pode ser unificada a formulação dos problemas de regolfo, seja para canais inclinados, seja para canais horizontais, propondo-se para estes a adopção de um função à qual se atribui o nome de Gagliardi. Studies on open-channel cross-section shapes and their hydraulic exponents. 1. Trapezoid

Neste primeiro estudo sobre formas de secção transversal de canais abertos e respectivos expoentes hidráulicos considera-se a secção trapezoidal, bem como os seus casos particulares: secções triangular e rectangular. Indica-se a maneira correcta de determinar os expoentes hidráulicos e faz-se uma referência crítica aos métodos de Chugaev-Chow e de Curto.
