    High-Q nested resonator in an actively stabilized optomechanical cavity

    Experiments involving micro- and nanomechanical resonators need to be carefully designed to reduce mechanical environmental noise. A small scale on-chip approach is to add an additional resonator to the system as a mechanical low-pass filter. Unfortunately, the inherent low frequency of the low-pass filter causes the system to be easily excited mechanically. Fixating the additional resonator ensures that the resonator itself can not be excited by the environment. This, however, negates the purpose of the low-pass filter. We solve this apparent paradox by applying active feedback to the resonator, thereby minimizing the motion with respect the front mirror of an optomechanical cavity.     Gas phase catalytic oxidation of VOCS using hydrothermally synthesized nest-like K-OMS 2 catalyst

    Toluene and benzene are hazardous air pollutants commonly found in the atmosphere at relatively high concentrations. Due to this, a need to remove these pollutants became a necessity. In this study, octahedral molecular sieve type manganese oxide (K-OMS 2) prepared by hydrothermal method was utilized to decompose toluene and benzene. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis were used to investigate the crystallinity, morphology, surface area and oxidation state of K-OMS 2, respectively. It was confirmed that K-OMS 2 was successfully produced from hydrothermal method. Central composite design (CCD) was used to investigate the main and interaction effects of gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) and reaction temperature on the thermal catalytic oxidation of benzene and toluene. Both factors were found to have significant main and interaction effects on toluene oxidation. However, only the main effects of the factors were significant for benzene. This result was due to the difference in the stability of the structures of the two VOCs. The K-OMS 2 obtained has excellent efficiency on toluene and benzene removal. Toluene was completely decomposed at a temperature as low as 250°C while benzene decomposition reached around 98% at 292.4°C

    Influence of silsesquioxane addition on polyurethane-based protective coatings for bronze surfaces

    Two-component solvent-born polyurethane coatings for the protection of bronze from corrosion were prepared. Trisilanol-heptaisooctyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquixane (POSS) nanoparticles were exploited to increase the coating protective efficiency. Its improvement was confirmed through a combination of characterisation techniques. In particular, the POSS addition caused an increase of the water contact angle, and an enhancement of the elastic connotation and abrasion resistance of the polyurethane coating. Potentiodynamic polarisation measurements also indicated that the coating containing POSS nanoparticles has an improved protection efficiency. Impedance spectroscopy revealed that the magnitude of low-frequency impedance of polyurethane coatings decreased more for the coating without POSS during exposure in electrolyte for thirty days. Ex situ IR reflection-absorption spectroelectrochemistry was exploited to get insight into the degradation of coatings during chronocoulometric charging at anodic potentials.     Effect of PFC Recycling Conditions on JET Pedestal Density

    There is experimental evidence that the pedestal dynamics in type-I ELMy H-mode discharges is significantly affected by a change in the recycling conditions at the tungsten plasma-facing components (W-PFCs) after an ELM event. The integrated code JINTRAC has been employed to assess the impact of recycling conditions during type-I ELMs in JET ITER-like wall H-mode discharges. By employing a heuristic approach, a model to mimic the physical processes leading to formation and release (i.e. outgassing) of finite near-surface fuel reservoirs in W-PFCs has been implemented into the EDGE2D-EIRENE plasma-wall interaction code being part of JINTRAC. As main result it is shown, that a delay in the density pedestal build-up after an ELM event can be provoked by reduced recycling induced by depleted W-PFC particle near-surface reservoirs. However the pedestal temperature evolution is barely affected by the change in recycling parameters suggesting that the presented model is incomplete.EURATOM 63305

    On the nature of CP Pup

    We present new X-ray and optical spectra of the old nova CP Pup (nova Pup 1942) obtained with Chandra and the Cerro Tololo Inter American Observatory (CTIO) 4 m telescope. The X-ray spectrum reveals a multitemperature optically thin plasma reaching a maximum temperature of 36^{+19}_{-16} keV absorbed by local complex neutral material. The time-resolved optical spectroscopy confirms the presence of the ?1.47 h period, with cycle-to-cycle amplitude changes, as well as of an additional long-term modulation which is suggestive either of a longer period or of non-Keplerian velocities in the emission line regions. These new observational facts add further support to CP Pup as a magnetic cataclysmic variable (mCV). We compare the mCV and the non-mCV scenarios and, while we cannot conclude whether CP Pup is a long-period system, all pieces of observational evidence point at an intermediate polar-type CV.Fil: Mason, E..     New X-ray observations of the old nova CP Puppis and of the more recent nova V351 Pup

    We present X-ray observations of the field containing Nova Puppis 1942 (CP Pup) and Nova Puppis 1991 (V351 Pup), done with ASCA in 1998, and with XMM-Newton in 2005. The X-ray and UV luminosity of CP Pup seem to have remained approximately constant since the last X-ray observations of the 1980'ies, while the optical luminosity has decreased. The X-ray properties of this nova are explained by a high mass white dwarf accreting at low rate, in agreement with the nova theory given the large amplitude and other characteristics of the 1942 outburst. Assuming a distance of 1600 pc, the X-ray luminosity of CP Pup is L=2.2 x 10(33) erg/s in the 0.15-10 keV range covered with EPIC, compatible with a magnetic system. The RGS grating spectrum shows a few prominent emission lines, and it is fitted with a cooling flow with mass accretion rate mdot <= 1.6 x 10(-10) msol/year. We detected also the O VII complex at 21.6-21.8 A that does not arise in the cooling flow. Most likely this feature originates in a wind or in the nova shell. The RGS and EPIC spectra are fitted only with thermal models with a very high shock temperature, T>60 keV, indicating a white dwarf with M>1.1 M(sun). The X-ray flux is modulated with the spectroscopic period of 1.47 hours detected in the optical. Since CP Pup is not an eclipsing system, this is better understood if magnetic accretion occurs: we discuss this possibility and its implications in detail. V351 Pup (N Pup 1991) was detected with XMM-Newton, but not with ASCA. It is a faint, non-super-soft X-ray source with luminosity L(x) =~ 3 x 10(31) erg/s, a factor of 50 less than measured with ROSAT in 1993.Comment: in press on the Astrophysical Journa

    Geoclimatic, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics related to dengue outbreaks in Southeastern Brazil: an annual spatial and spatiotemporal risk model over a 12-year period

    Dengue fever is re-emerging worldwide, however the reasons of this new emergence are not fully understood. Our goal was to report the incidence of dengue in one of the most populous States of Brazil, and to assess the high-risk areas using a spatial and spatio-temporal annual models including geoclimatic, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. An ecological study with both, a spatial and a temporal component was carried out in Sao Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil, between January 1st, 2007 and December 31st, 2019. Crude and Bayesian empirical rates of dengue cases following by Standardized Incidence Ratios (SIR) were calculated considering the municipalities as the analytical units and using the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation in a Bayesian context. A total of 2,027,142 cases of dengue were reported during the studied period. The spatial model allocated the municipalities in four groups according to the SIR values: (I) SIR&lt;0.8; (II) SIR 0.8&lt;1.2; (III) SIR 1.2&lt;2.0 and SIR&gt;2.0 identified the municipalities with higher risk for dengue outbreaks. “Hot spots” are shown in the thematic maps. Significant correlations between SIR and two climate variables, two demographic variables and one socioeconomical variable were found. No significant correlations were found in the spatio-temporal model. The incidence of dengue exhibited an inconstant and unpredictable variation every year. The highest rates of dengue are concentrated in geographical clusters with lower surface pressure, rainfall and altitude, but also in municipalities with higher degree of urbanization and better socioeconomic conditions. Nevertheless, annual consolidated variations in climatic features do not influence in the epidemic yearly pattern of dengue in southeastern Brazil
